Suniel Shetty champions 'Fit India Sundays on Cycle', says wellness is far cheaper than illness
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], May 18 (ANI): Actor and fitness icon Suniel Shetty gave a powerful call for consistent wellness at the 'Fit India Sundays on Cycle' event, hosted by the Fit India Movement in collaboration with CBIC-GST here.
Shetty joined participants at the GST Commissionerate in Mumbai, adding star power and substance to an initiative that's fast becoming a people's movement.
The event on May 18 marked eight years of GST and celebrated a nationwide commitment to fitness, uniting thousands across CBIC-GST centers in a synchronised push towards health, community, and cleaner air.
'Wellness is far cheaper than illness. Fitness should not be a one-day thing, like cycling only today, but must be practised every day for overall wellness. Only then does it make a difference,' Shetty said as quoted from a press release by SAI Media.
At Thiruvananthapuram, the event was flagged off by three celebrated Olympians and international athletes, Jisna Mathew (Rio 2016, 4x400m), M.P. Jabir (Tokyo 2020, 400m hurdles), and Anu Raghavan (Asian Games and Championship medalist). Their presence inspired over 200 participants to take on the cycling trail with passion and pride.
Leading the peloton were five of India's top cyclists, Pooja Danole, Dhanyadha JP, Srimathi J, Rejiya Devi, and Niraimathi J, each a decorated national and international medalist. Their guidance powered the message: fitness isn't just a sprint, it's a marathon we ride together.
Meanwhile, in New Delhi, cycling was just one part of the movement. Chess Grandmaster Tania Sachdev, fresh from her gold medal win at the 2024 Chess Olympiad in Budapest, joined the ride and energised crowds with a fitness-forward message.
'Fitness doesn't need fancy equipment or a gym -- just willpower and discipline. Stamina is essential even in chess. Cycling is now a big part of my fitness regime,' she said.
The capital's event, held at Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium, featured Zumba, rope skipping, and yoga sessions, transforming the Sunday into a celebration of movement and mental wellness. The event was held at various locations across the country including SAI RCs, STCs, NCOEs, Khelo India Centers, and all key CBIC-GST centers.
Shashank Priya, Special Secretary and Member, CBIC GST, added, 'This collaboration with Fit India and GST is a strong message that fitness is for everyone -- not just for athletes. It's encouraging to see such awareness around lifestyle diseases and the need for better food habits and less sugar.'
'What we eat is also important, so that we control too much sugar and aerated drinks. It's important to ensure that we can fight obesity. We are prone to heart disease so it is important to move towards this goal of a fitter, healthier India,' he added.
The cycling initiative has now rolled through 5,500-plus locations and reached over 3 lakh citizens since its launch in December 2024. Social media buzzed with endorsements from icons including Sania Mirza, Milind Soman, Emraan Hashmi, John Abraham, Imtiaz Ali, Shankar Mahadevan, all lending their voices to inspire everyday fitness.
'India is coming together to take a step towards fitness by cycling. I urge everyone to join our officers this Sunday and make it a memorable event,' said Shankar Mahadevan, in his video message. 'Fit Hum, Toh Fit India,' added Milind Soman.
With growing momentum, Fit India's Sundays on Cycle is redefining how we move, one pedal stroke at a time -- turning public spaces into wellness hubs, and citizens into champions of health. (ANI)

Who are the 7 inducted into ICC Hall of fame?
The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Monday (June 9, 2025) announced the addition of seven veterans of the game into the ICC Hall of Fame. Here is a look at the seven inductees: From lifting India's first T20 World Cup in 2007 with a young, untested squad, to guiding the Men in Blue to a historic 2011 ODI World Cup win at home, and adding the Champions Trophy in 2013, Dhoni remains the only captain in cricket history to win all three ICC white-ball trophies. His leadership brought calm to chaos, turning pressure into opportunity and dreams into triumphs. With over 10,000 ODI runs at an astonishing average of 50.57, his legacy with the bat is as impactful as it is enduring. Behind the stumps, Dhoni was a phenomenon. His lightning-fast stumpings and razor-sharp anticipation revolutionised wicketkeeping in limited-overs cricket. Matthew Hayden was an opening batter for Australia for 16 years. He briefly took Brian Lara's test record with 380 against Zimbabwe in Perth, and hit three centuries while winning the 2007 ODI World Cup. His stats include the 61 ODIs – 6,133 runs at an average of 43.80, 103 Tests – 8,625 runs at an average of 50.73. Hasim Amla spent 13 hours scoring South Africa's first triple century, 311 against England at the Oval in 2012. He also rose to No. 1 in the ODI rankings. He has a total of 55 international centuries. Graeme Smith became South Africa's youngest captain at 22. He led in a world record 109 tests and won 53, including the Proteas' first series win in Australia in 2008-09 in which he played with a broken hand. In 117 Tests, he scored 9,265 runs at an average of 48.25, with 8 wickets. In ODIs, out of 197 matches, he secured 6,989 runs at an average of 37.98. Kiwi legendary left-arm spinner Daniel Vettori has also been inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame. Finishing with more than 700 international wickets and close to 7000 international runs, Vettori's career was defined by adaptability, intelligence, and understated excellence with bat and ball. Vettori paved out an excellent career as a player and was one of just three players to score 4,000 runs and take 300 wickets in Test cricket. Sana Mir led Pakistan for seven of her 15 years in the team, winning two Asian Games. She started as a pace bowler, but a stress fracture forced her to switch to off-spin. She retired as Pakistan's leading wicket-taker in ODIs and second second-highest in T20s. In 120 ODIs, she bagged 1,630 runs with an average of 17.91, 151 wickets. Sarah Taylor set the standard for women wicketkeepers with a record 232 dismissals across the formats. She was a key contributor in England's ODI World Cup and T20 World Cup double in 2009 and another ODI World Cup triumph in 2017.

India's Sai Sudharsan solidifies his defensive technique ahead of Test series against England
London [UK], June 10 (ANI): Tamil Nadu's young top-order batter B Sai Sudharsan is one of the Indian players who has found himself in the spotlight as the countdown begins for the first Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, set to kick off on June 20 at Headingley. The focus tends to shift towards Sudharsan naturally, considering he is among the forerunners to feature in the number three spot for India. The 23-year-old who stands in contention for earning his maiden Test cap for India will have to bear the responsibility on his shoulders of filling a spot that Cheteshwar Pujara held. Pujara offered stability at number three, making the spot his own while raising the bar with his robust performances. The baton was eventually passed down to the newly crowned Test captain, Shubman Gill. While India is yet to confirm officially, the rumour mill has suggested Gill is expected to occupy the number four spot, which was up for grabs after batting maestro Virat Kohli retired from the format last month. Sudharsan, known for his defensive craft, has put his skills on display in the last two days of India's training sessions in Beckenham while facing India's fast-bowling quartet of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, and Arshdeep Singh, according to Espncricinfo. During the sessions, the young southpaw wasn't fluent throughout, as thick and faint outside edges flew towards the slip and gully region. India head coach Gautam Gambhir stood a couple of yards behind, observing Sudharsan's technique while maintaining his trademark arms-folded-across-the-chest stance. During their shared conversations, Gambhir appeared to be offering some insights about his technique. Sudharsan was also spotted chatting with skipper Gill, possibly about the forward defensive technique. India Squad: Shubman Gill (c), Rishabh Pant (vc, wk), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudarshan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel, Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav.
