Mamata to visit Delhi next Monday, may meet PM Modi
Sources at Nabanna, the state secretariat, said that the CM's Office has sought an appointment from the PMO for a meeting on June 10. 'The chief minister wants to raise the issue of the Centre's pending funds and dues to the West Bengal government, which has now ballooned to over Rs 2 lakh 27 thousand crore,' an official said.
The TMC government in the state has been raising the issue of pending Central funds for schemes like MGNREGA (rural job guarantee scheme) and PM Awas Yojana (housing scheme for the poor), and has even knocked the doors of the Supreme Court. The BJP government at the Centre has justified the blocking of the funds, citing alleged corruption in the implementation of the schemes in the state.
Last week, Banerjee had skipped the 10th Governing Council meeting of NITI Aayog in Delhi that was chaired by the PM.
Sources close to Mamata said she decided not to attend the previous meeting because the NDA-led states were allotted more than 15 minutes to speak, while she was given only five minutes.
During her visit, Banerjee will also inaugurate her party's new office in Delhi.
Meanwhile, Banerjee on Thursday visited SSKM Hospital in Kolkata for a follow-up of her leg injury that she had received while campaigning for the party in Nandigram during the 2021 Assembly elections.

Delhi Notifies Law to Curb Arbitrary Fee Hikes in Private Schools
The Delhi government has notified the Delhi School Education (Transparency in Fixation and Regulation of Fees) Act, 2025, aimed at ending arbitrary fee hikes by private schools. The Bill, passed in the Delhi Assembly on August 8 after extended debate, covers all 1,700 private schools in the capital, a significant expansion from the earlier 1973 law, which applied to only around 300, as per the government. "This bill addresses all the concerns and the gazette notification has now been issued. Any government-recognised private school that feels threatened by this is welcome to forgo its government recognition," Delhi Education Minister Ashish Sood said. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced the notification during her Independence Day address. "I want to greet Delhi residents for the revolution in the education sector that has taken place. The education bill has been notified and I am happy to share this information on the occasion of Independence Day," she said. Parents' Town Hall On Friday, Mr Sood held a "Parents' Town Hall" in Janakpuri to explain the law's provisions. About 200 parents attended, questioning the minister on implementation timelines, penalty clauses, and parent participation in fee decisions. The law gives parents a role in the fee-fixation process, including veto power on proposed hikes. It mandates that any school raising fees without government approval will face fines of Rs 1 Lakh to Rs 10 lakh, with double penalties for failing to refund excess charges. For enforcement, the Director of Education will have powers equivalent to a Sub-Divisional Magistrate. Mr Sood said the measure was drafted after consultations with parents and education experts. "Private schools are necessary for Delhi, but transparency and accountability in fee fixation are equally essential," he told the gathering. The new process sets strict timelines - school-level committee decisions by July 15 every year, district-level by July 30, and final clearance by September. If no decision is made within 45 days, the matter will move to an appellate committee. Parents' Concerns While some parents welcomed the penalties for harassment and overcharging, others questioned the speed of the rollout. "The government's intent is good, but it looks like they have done it in a hurry. The main ethos of fee regulation is audit, and that is completely absent. Secondly, the composition of the school-level committee is nothing more than an extension of the school management. The penalties are a good aspect of the law, though," a parent told NDTV.

Texas Blames ESG Efforts in Probe of Xcel Over 2024 Wildfires
(Bloomberg) -- The Texas attorney general is investigating utility Xcel Energy Inc. and its contractor for two wildfires that devastated the state last year, saying the companies may have prioritized environmental and diversity goals over maintenance and safety. 'It is unconscionable that utility companies might have sacrificed infrastructure maintenance, public safety and the well-being of our Texas communities for radical ESG and DEI goals,' Attorney General Ken Paxton said in a statement Friday. Xcel shares fell as much as 4.5% after the investigation was announced before rebounding, and were down 1.8% to $71.06 at 11:56 a.m. in New York. Xcel has acknowledged that its infrastructure was likely involved in starting the the Smokehouse Creek fire, which charred more than 1 million acres in the Texas Panhandle, destroying ranches and killing thousands of livestock animals and two people. However, the company has disputed that its power lines sparked the nearby Windy Deuce blaze, the other incident Texas cited in its investigation. Climate change has ripened conditions for more frequent and devastating wildfires. Across the US, utilities have been facing mounting pressure to better protect their equipment. And while power companies have been found to cause blazes in recent years, there's no evidence that's come because of prioritizing other initiatives. The attorney general's offices issued civil investigative demand letters to Xcel, its utility Southwestern Public Service Co. and its contractor Osmose Utilities Services. An Xcel representative didn't immediately provide a statement, while an Osmose representative didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. Republican-led states have targeted companies and financial institutions for adopting environmental, social and governance policies, or ESG, that limit business with the firearms or fossil fuels industries. They've also criticized diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives, or DEI. Texas restricts government work with companies that discriminate against firearms entities or boycott oil and gas companies. The ESG push at investment firms, pension funds and law practices has faded somewhat, partly because of efforts to avoid attacks by President Donald Trump and Republicans. Xcel has set a goal of net zero carbon emissions by 2050, which is common among utility companies. Thackeray Cousins To Contest Mumbai, Other Civic Polls Together: Sanjay Raut
Mumbai: The civic polls in Mumbai and other key cities will see cousins Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray, earlier not on amicable terms, form an alliance, said Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) leader Sanjay Raut. "The Thackeray brothers (Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray) will contest the municipal corporation elections in Mumbai, Thane, Nashik and Kalyan-Dombivali together and win. The strength of Raj and Uddhav Thackeray is the strength of the unity of the Marathi-speakers. No power cannot break the iron fist of `Marathi manus' now," Raut told reporters. Civic polls are due in Mumbai, Thane, Kalyan-Dombivali, Navi Mumbai, Ulhasnagar, Bhiwandi-Nizamapur, Vasai-Virar, Mira-Bhayandar and Panvel, apart from other cities like Nashik. Mr Raut said Uddhav and Raj Thackeray have the support of the Marathi-speaking population, adding that discussions are on between Shiv Sena (UBT) and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) leaders on the way forward. Maharashtra minister and BJP leader Girish Mahajan said anyone can separate or unite in a democracy. "They should win the elections in Mumbai, Pune and Nashik first, and then talk any further," he said. Bharat Gogavale, a leader of the Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, said the ruling Mahayuti alliance, comprising the BJP, Shinde Sena and Ajit Pawar-led NCP, will win all civic polls. Two decades after Raj Thackeray quit the Shiv Sena, talks of a Raj-Uddhav reunion began in April as discussions on the Marathi identity and Hindi "imposition" in Maharashtra gained momentum. The fight for language also likely poses a political opportunity for the fledgling Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance, smarting from the 15 per cent vote share it garnered in the Assembly elections last year, as the Mahayuti marched to a comfortable victory. The MNS ended with a blank slate. The civic polls, especially in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) which the Uddhav Sena considers its citadel, are thus a matter of prestige for the Shiv Sena (UBT). The state government's flip-flop on the three-language policy and the introduction of Hindi as a third language proved a galvanising force for the parties led by the cousins. In the run-up to these municipal elections, the brothers have already shared the stage at a victory rally in Mumbai earlier this month to celebrate the rollback of the Hindi language GRs (resolutions) by the BJP-led government. "We have come together to stay together. We will together capture power in the Mumbai civic body and Maharashtra," Uddhav Thackeray said, evoking loud cheers from the crowd in the packed NSCI Dome in Worli. Raj Thackeray said that, after the language row, the government's next move in politics will be to divide people on caste. "The BJP's ploy is to divide and rule," he charged. "Mumbai was our right, we fought and got it. We have to expose the BJP's 'one nation, one election' idea. Slowly, they want to make everything one. Hindu and Hindustan, we agree but we won't allow Hindi. We made Marathi compulsory, we had to do it," Uddhav Thackeray had added.
