Nanta: 46 contractors awarded federal road maintenance projects in Sarawak totalling RM50 mln for 2025
KUCHING (June 23): A total of RM50 million has been allocated this year for periodic maintenance works on federal roads across Sarawak, covering areas from Kuching to Lawas.
Works Minister Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the projects, which include both pavement and non-pavement maintenance, are part of an urgent response to needs identified statewide through prior assessments.
'The locations have been selected based on urgency. There are many more that require attention, but with limited funds, we prioritise critical areas,' said he told reporters after launching the Periodic Works Balloting Ceremony for G1 to G4 Bumiputera Contractors under the Federal Road Maintenance Contract for Sarawak 2025 here today.
In his speech, Nanta said the RM50 million allocation is part of an RM400 million development provision approved by the Ministry of Finance under Budget 2025 for Bumiputera contractors nationwide.
He said Sarawak's portion will fund 46 Work Orders; 25 for Periodic Pavement (BP) works such as resurfacing and patching and 21 for Periodic Non-Pavement (BBP) works.
Of these, six will be awarded to G1 contractors, 14 to G2, two to G3, and 24 to G4.
He explained that the balloting system, first introduced in 2020 by the Works Ministry, ensures transparency and fairness in selecting qualified Bumiputera contractors for the jobs.
'This system is to ensure fairness and to avoid any perception of favouritism.
'It is very transparent. That is why we hold the ballot,' he said.
Nanta reminded the selected contractors that the contracts awarded are not just a source of income.
'This is not just a job contract. It comes with the responsibility to carry out maintenance works properly, according to the given specifications and schedule.
'Failure to do so may result in road accidents or even fatalities due to poorly maintained infrastructure.
'Do not let your poor management lead to harm for road users. These are lives we are talking about. They could be your own family or friends,' he warned.
He also instructed the Public Work Department (JKR) Sarawak to continue monitoring the quality of contractors' work even after contracts are awarded.
'Our duty does not end with outsourcing. I have seen cases of poor supervision elsewhere and I do not want it happening here,' he said.
He added that the previous year's allocation for Sarawak was also RM50 million and expressed hope for additional funds under the next budget to support similar efforts in future. alexander nanta linggi lead road maintenance

PWD orders catch-up plans for delayed projects, highlights RM611 bil 13MP chance
BATU PAHAT: All Public Works Department (PWD) projects that have fallen behind schedule must submit a "catch-up" or rescheduling plan to ensure timely completion. Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Maslan said the directive applies nationwide to projects under PWD that are less than 10 per cent behind the initial completion timeline. "The ministry has instructed we produce more 'ahead of time' (AOT) lists instead of 'extension of time' (EOT). Projects must meet the original timeline or schedule," he said after visiting the Batu Pahat PWD office today. Ahmad said catch-up methods may include increasing manpower, adopting new technologies and introducing extra shift work. "For example, in Sabah, a housing project for the Armed Forces used three shifts to catch up. Each shift worked eight hours with different workers. "At night, they carried out tasks that did not disturb residents, such as painting and using machineries that were not noisy. "This is what a catch-up plan means. We want projects to achieve AOT, not EOT," he said. On a separate matter, Ahmad urged all contractors from grades G1 to G7 to seize opportunities in the upcoming government projects listed under 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), tabled by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim recently. He said of the RM611 billion allocated for 13MP, a large portion was for development projects, which directly involved the construction industry. "The construction industry is for contractors. I have reminded all contractors to not miss this chance, as the next one is five years away. "Plus, under 13MP, the allocation is larger than 12MP, which was only RM400 billion. "Of the RM611 billion, RM430 billion is government allocation, RM120 billion from government-linked companies (GLCs) and government-linked investment companies (GLICs), while RM61 billion will come from public-private partnerships," he said. Also present at the visit were Johor PWD director Ir Zainal Tumian and district PWD engineer Ir Fairul Azrie Yaacob.

ACE Market-bound Express Powerr to raise RM36mil from IPO
From left: Express Powerr Solutions (M) Bhd non-independent executive director Rosli Jonid, Express Powerr managing director Lim Cheng Ten, Express Powerr independent non-executive chairman Datuk Mohd Redza Shah Abdul Wahid, Mercury Securities Sdn Bhd director Jamieson Chew Yen Loong and Mercury Securities head of corporate finance Eric Chong Soo Keng. KUALA LUMPUR: Generator rental services provider Express Powerr Solutions (M) Bhd which is en route to be listed on the ACE Market of Bursa Malaysia on Sept 24, 2025, is expected to raise RM36.0 million through its upcoming initial public offering (IPO). The IPO price is fixed at 20 sen per share, giving the company a market capitalisation of RM186.9 million upon listing, based on an enlarged issued share capital of 934.4 million shares. Managing director Lim Cheng Ten said the proceeds would enable the company to expand its fleet by at least 36 units and acquire medium- and high-voltage equipment to support this expansion over the next three years. Lim said Tenaga Nasional Bhd is expected to remain Express Powerr's largest revenue contributor, although its reliance has dropped to 60 per cent in 2024 from 95 per cent previously. "Looking ahead, we see opportunities in the oil and gas (O&G) sector, where reliable, high-capacity power is critical, especially offshore and in remote environments. We plan to explore this further in the fourth quarter of the year,' he said. He noted that with 27 O&G projects worth RM4.46 billion approved in the first nine months of 2024, demand for generator sets (gensets) in exploration and drilling is set to rise. To reward shareholders, Lim said the company has adopted a dividend policy of 30-50 per cent of net profit. On diversification, he said the group's solar business remains in its infancy and would not be a near-term focus. Instead, Express Powerr aims to expand its presence within Malaysia, adding Penang and Kelantan to its current coverage of Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Negeri Sembilan, Johor, Pahang and Sabah. He also noted that although data centres are growing rapidly in Johor, Express Powerr does not supply gensets to them as they usually purchase directly from manufacturers. "However, we can support them during emergencies,' Lim added. At the event, Lim said the IPO would involve the public issuance of 180 million new shares, representing 19.3 per cent of enlarged share capital, and an offer for sale of 65.4 million existing shares (7.0 per cent). Of the 180 million new shares, 46.7 million would be offered to the public via balloting, 18.7 million allocated to eligible directors, employees and contributors (pink form), 63.2 million placed out to selected investors, and 51.4 million reserved for Bumiputera investors approved by the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI). The 65.4 million offer shares would also be placed with Bumiputera investors approved by MITI. Applications will close on Sept 8, 2025, at 5 pm. Currently, Express Powerr operates a fleet of 115 generator units, 70 per cent of which are mobile truck-mounted sets. Nearly three-quarters of the fleet comprises large generators of 500 kilovolt-ampere (kVA) and above, suited for high-demand applications. For the financial year ended Dec 31, 2024, the group's revenue rose to RM70.2 million from RM19.3 million in 2021, translating into a three-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 53.7 per cent. Net profit grew at a CAGR of 43.1 per cent to RM16.6 million from RM5.7 million. Mercury Securities is the principal adviser, sponsor, sole underwriter and placement agent for the IPO. - Bernama

Grab glitch shows RM1,500 fares, users react with shock & memes
A widespread technical glitch on the Grab ride-hailing app stunned users across Malaysia and Singapore yesterday, displaying inflated fares exceeding RM1,500 for short journeys that typically cost under RM50. The bizarre pricing error went viral after Reddit user @chocolatetequila shared a screenshot showing a fare of RM1,516 for a 14-kilometre ride from Subang Jaya to Damansara, captioning it 'Is this normal for Malaysia?' The post quickly gained traction as other users began sharing similar screenshots of exorbitant prices, sparking widespread discussion and humorous reactions across social media platforms. A Grab spokesman attributed the elevated rates to a temporary display glitch, with fares returning to normal as of about 12.20pm. The company confirmed that the technical issue affected multiple markets simultaneously, with prices jumping about a hundred times from usual rates. Crucially, Grab clarified that the glitch was purely a display error and did not affect actual bookings or charges to users. Malaysian users were quick to document the unusual fares. User @xXStrikerleoXx shared an image showing a 'Standard' ride from Putrajaya priced at RM1,011, writing: 'No, the app has issues right now, currently can't order because prices are 1k. Send help. Edit: fixed now.' Another user, @bruhddaa, posted a KLCC-to-Damansara route priced at RM1,015, quipping: 'I'll just drive there instead.' The absurd pricing sparked creativity among users, with many turning to humor to cope with the shock. User @insertfakenames joked: 'With that price I expect a private jet to come and pick me up.' Another, @immunedata, remarked: 'I bet there's a tourist traveling around SEA who is losing track of currency conversion rates and books without thinking.' The glitch wasn't limited to Malaysia. User @RedguardHaziq noted: 'Singapore also had this weird surge. 5km had us paying the same amount in RM. Probably system related.' @Panda_Blue-88 shared a Singapore screenshot showing fares above S$1,500, adding: 'Maybe Grab was thinking in Rupees.' Grab responded quickly to user complaints, resolving the technical issue within hours of the first reports. The company issued an apology for the inconvenience caused by what it described as a temporary system malfunction. The incident highlights the critical importance of robust testing in ride-hailing apps, where pricing algorithms can significantly impact user experience and trust.
