An unexpected new perk at some Costco stores has left shoppers divided. Executive membership holders have found themselves having first dibs on free samples as the result of a new policy which allows them into the store an hour earlier than other customers. A TikToker posted a video of a sample station at a store open for executive members at 9am , an hour before Costco opens stores for all members.
The station featured on the clip included fresh croissants and strawberry jam. Another user also shared a video of a pastry-stocked sample station for early executive members at 9am at her local store. Reddit users claimed employees typically began offering free samples in the late mornings or early afternoons before the new rule came in.
While some users were frustrated over the early offerings, others were excited, and a few reminded commenters that samples are available for all Costco shoppers. A couple of people also said they were considering purchasing an executive membership, which starts at $130 a year. Costco's executive members have had the opportunity to take advantage of multiple new benefits this year.
They've had the opportunity to receive $10 monthly credit towards delivery orders made on Costco Same-Day or Costco via Instacart since June. The monthly credit offer is available for all executive members in the US and Canada who spend $150 or more on an order. Other benefits executive members can enjoy include exclusive discounts, pet insurance, and additional value within the Costco Auto Program.
Around half of Costco shoppers have executive level memberships and account for 73 percent of sales. Shoppers who aren't interested in going the executive route can always purchase a regular Gold Star membership for $65 a year. Unlike other perks, all 50 plus million members around the US and Canada have been able to enjoy extended gas station hours .
The chain earned $61.96 billion during its 36-week third quarter period, which ended on May 11. Its net sales were an 8 percent increase from last year's third quarter. It comes after customers were not thrilled to learn of plans to drop Pepsi beverages in Costco food halls throughout the US.
Some shoppers have also claimed Costco has quietly raised food court prices in recent months, which the company has yet to confirm is true. DailyMail.com has reached out to Costco for comment.

Morrisons shoppers confused over new 'cleaning robots' Elsewhere, Morrisons shoppers have recently been sharing their bemusement after noticing a new addition in stores. Taking to social media, customers noticed posters confirming some supermarkets now had 'cleaning robots'. The large blue machines roam around stores and are "programmed to keep a safe distance" while people shop. However, some shoppers have been left confused by the technology, with one Morrisons customer asking, "Who signed this off?" Taking to the Reddit page r/Morrisons, one customer of the supermarket shared the poster explaining the new robots, which quickly gained a response from fellow shoppers. The poster read: "Shinnier floors. "Our new cleaning robot is programmed to keep a safe distance while you shop. "If you have any questions, please ask a member of our team." Some suggested that the robot would be taking jobs away, as one wrote: "Personally, just see a human losing their job..." ESPN has reached a deal with the NFL to purchase RedZone, NFL Network and other league holdings, the Athletic reported on Friday. The NFL will receive equity in ESPN that 'is potentially worth billions' in exchange, according to the report. An official announcement is expected next week, ending a four-year period of complicated, on-and-off negotiations. Both sides declined to provide comment to the Athletic. In addition to RedZone and NFL Network, ESPN will gain access to seven more regular-season games and the NFL's fantasy football operations, as well as the potential to integrate sports betting and other special features. The NFL's equity stake in ESPN could be as much as 10%, CNBC first reported and the Athletic confirmed. An ESPN-NFL deal would require regulatory approval, a process that could take up to a year to complete. The two sides already have a cozy relationship. ESPN pays the NFL about $2.7bn per year to air a total of 25 games, including Monday Night Football. The network also holds the rights to the Super Bowls in 2027 and 2031. Friday's reported agreement comes as ESPN is preparing to launch its direct-to-consumer service, with subscribers paying $29.99 per month to bypass cable and satellite providers to view all of the network's programming through the ESPN app.

Outerwear retailer Columbia Sportswear has sued Columbia University over alleged trademark infringement and a breach of contract, saying that the university's merchandise looks too similar to its own offerings and can confuse shoppers. In a lawsuit filed on 23 July in federal court in Oregon, Columbia Sportswear, whose roots date back to 1938, alleges that the Ivy League university in New York City intentionally violated an agreement the parties signed on 13 June 2023. That agreement dictated how the university could use the word 'Columbia' on its own apparel and accessories. As part of the pact, the university could feature 'Columbia' on its merchandise provided that the name included a recognizable school insignia or its mascot, the word 'university', the name of the academic department, or the founding year of the university – 1754 – or a combination. Columbia Sportswear clothing is sold at more than 800 retail locations including more than 150 of its branded stores, as well as its website and third-party marketplaces. But Columbia Sportswear alleges the university breached the agreement a little more than a year later, with the company based in Portland, Oregon, noticing several garments without any of the school logos being sold at the Columbia University online store. Many of the garments feature a bright blue color that is 'confusingly similar' to the blue color that has long been associated with Columbia Sportswear, the suit alleged. The lawsuit offered photos of some of the Columbia University items that say only 'Columbia'. 'The likelihood of deception, confusion, and mistake engendered by the university's misappropriation and misuse of the Columbia name is causing irreparable harm to the brand and goodwill symbolized by Columbia Sportswear's registered mark Columbia and the reputation for quality it embodies,' the lawsuit alleged. The lawsuit comes at a time when Columbia University has been threatened with the potential loss of billions of dollars in government support. Columbia University recently reached a deal with the Trump administration to pay more than $220m to the federal government to restore federal research money that was canceled in the name of combating antisemitism on campus. Under the agreement, the Ivy League school will pay a $200m over three years, the university said. Columbia Sportswear aims to stop all sales of clothing that violate the agreement, recall any products already sold and donate any remaining merchandise to charity. Columbia Sportswear is also seeking three times the amount of actual damages determined by a jury. Neither Columbia Sportswear nor Columbia University could be immediately reached for comment.
