Bengaluru stampede: Families of victims break down while accepting compensation
Bengaluru: The state govt on Sunday reached out to families of the victims in various parts of the state. Following directions from chief minister Siddaramaiah, district-in-charge ministers and the deputy commissioners handed over the compensation cheques to the kin of victims.
However, the mourning family members turned emotional and questioned the purpose of compensation extended by the govt.
Tumakuru DC Shubha Kalyan handed over a cheque for Rs 25 lakh to the family of Manoj from Kunigal. "He would have completed graduation and begun working. But then, this happened, and we lost him. The govt should've taken safety measures. Who will come to our rescue now? The compensation cannot heal our scar, and it will be permanent.
Everything cannot be replaced with money. If he was alive, he would have earned double the compensation in just two years," Devaraj, Manoj's father, lamented.
The family was supposed to celebrate Manoj's birthday in July. Devaraj said: "He wanted a bike. I told him to learn bike riding and was preparing to surprise him with a bike. I had already booked it."
Initially, the parents of software engineer Sahana in Kolar refused to accept the cheque presented by DC Ravi MR.

Caught on camera: Restaurant vandalised over delay in food service in Ghaziabad
Panic broke out late Saturday night at a restaurant in Ghaziabad when a group of armed men stormed in and vandalised the premises, causing chaos amongst diners, including women and children. The incident occurred in the Rajnagar Extension area at a restaurant called Apni Rasoi around 11:30 to the FIR filed by the restaurant owner, Akshit Tyagi, the ruckus began over a delay in food service. Initially, there was a heated exchange of abuses. A few hours later, around 6–7 individuals arrived on motorcycles and a WagonR taxi and attacked the restaurant wielding sticks, rods and the violent attack, the men allegedly damaged two laptops, an LED screen, and a billing machine. They also reportedly took Rs 1,760 from the billing counter. At the time of the incident, several families, including women and children, were dining at the restaurant. Frightened by the sudden violence, they fled the scene to save their lives. Tyagi also alleged in his complaint that some of the accused had previously visited the restaurant on June 6, drunk and involved in a brawl, but the matter was settled that of three accused have come to light - Mintu Tyagi, Rajdeep, and Ravi Sharma. Based on the complaint, an FIR has been registered under IPC sections 352 (assault or use of criminal force), 115(2), 324(4), 351(3), and 309(6).Police are now scrutinising the CCTV footage to identify and arrest the accused. Tax evasion a national crime, take stern action against fake firms: CM
1 2 Lucknow: Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday directed officials to act against shell companies and fake firms that are deriving undue benefits against the rules. He said that such acts were an attempt to misuse the facilities meant for genuine traders and the matter should be dealt with seriously. The CM, while conducting a high-level review of the state tax department, directed officials to ensure transparency in tax collection and adopt a policy of technological efficiency and strict enforcement. Calling the act of such companies 'unforgivable', Yogi said, "Tax evasion is a national crime that negatively impacts development plans and welfare schemes." Stressing that GST is a consumer-based tax system, he noted that areas with higher population density were naturally expected to generate increased tax revenues for the state coffers. He instructed officials to develop special strategies for zones where tax collection is below average. Yogi directed that information on suspicious firms registered under central GST (CGST) be shared with the higher authorities in Delhi for cancellation of their registration. He ordered in-depth departmental investigations for firms under state GST (SGST). Such inspections are essential to ensure that genuine businesses can operate fairly and without interference." During the meeting, officials informed the CM that nearly Rs 18,162 crore was collected through GST and VAT tax components in April and May of the 2025-26 financial year. The target for the year assigned to the department is Rs 1.76 lakh crore. Appreciating the progress, the CM directed officials to achieve the target through regular monitoring. The CM praised the achievements of 14 zones, including Lucknow, Ayodhya, Bareilly, Agra, Ghaziabad, Gautam Budh Nagar, Meerut, Jhansi, and Saharanpur divisions, for achieving increased targets. In contrast, officials in Varanasi, Prayagraj, Kanpur, Etawah, Aligarh, and Moradabad were reprimanded for collecting less than 50% of the stipulated target. He said that a detailed report should be prepared covering the role of officials deputed in the low-performing regions and sent to the govt. He emphasized that revenue was not just a number, but the foundation of development, and every officer should carry out their duties with responsibility and sensitivity. "In areas with weak tax collection, additional, joint, and deputy commissioners should personally engage with traders to build trust, cooperation, and a sense of compliance among the taxpayer community," said Yogi.

Faster e-challans & fine payment over traffic violations in offing
Ranchi: The traffic department is all set to expedite the process of issuing challans and making payments faster in connection with traffic violations in Ranchi city. Moreover, a string of other measures are in the offing and will be implemented soon to smoothen traffic movement. While reviewing the traffic system of Ranchi recently, Inspector General (IG) Manoj Koushik instructed that challans issued to traffic violators should not take too long to be issued and must be dealt with on the next day of the rule violation itself. In view of the large number of traffic violations happening every day, he also directed that the unit vetting the e-challans generated out of CCTVs should be activated. He said that the assessment of the number of personnel required for the task should be determined at the earliest. IG Koushik also discussed methods to simplify fine payment with UPI being considered one of the modes. It may be stated that there are around 600 CCTVs across Ranchi city which are used to detect vehicles violating traffic norms and also generate e-challans.
