Time of India5 days ago

Varanasi: The cyber crime police in Varanasi on Sunday arrested two members of an interstate
cyber fraud
gang, including its kingpin, for duping people under the guise of offering business franchises of reputed companies.
Producing the arrested duo before reporters, DCP (Crime) T Sarvanan said that the arrested accused have been identified as Sanjeet Singh (35) and Krishna Shaw, both residents of Kolkata. The police recovered 12 mobile phones, a laptop, multiple SIM cards, Rs 15,430 in cash, Rs 5.83 lakh frozen in a bank account, and a customer data diary from their possession.
During investigation, it was revealed that Sanjeet Singh was the mastermind behind the operations.
The racket came to light after Anil Kumar Singh, a resident of Bankat village in Lohata, filed a complaint alleging that cyber fraudsters had duped him of Rs 14 lakh on the pretext of offering a franchise of Adani Cement. Further inquiry revealed the gang's modus operandi involved creating or purchasing fake domains closely resembling those of reputed companies such as McDonald's, Dominos (Jubilant FoodWorks), JSW Steel, Adani Cements, KFC, and Haldiram.

These counterfeit websites were promoted through social media advertisements, especially on platforms like Facebook and Instagram, to target aspiring franchisees.
Once a potential victim showed interest, gang members would reach out using the collected leads and share forged documents, including letters of intent and approval letters, to gain the victim's trust. They would then demand payments under various pretexts such as registration fees, security deposits, and GST charges, which were transferred to accounts appearing to belong to the said companies. Police said the collected funds were later distributed among the gang members.

Woman lodges rape plaint against Kartik Maharaj

1 2 3 Behrampore: A woman filed a complaint at Nabagram police station on Thursday alleging repeated rape by Padma Shri recipient Swami Pradiptanandaji, also known as Kartik Maharaj, secretary of Bharat Sevashram Sangha in Murshidabad's Beldanga. Police have launched an investigation into the allegations. The complainant stated that she had sought a teaching position at Bharat Sevashram Sangha and was accommodated on Chanak Adivasi Balika Vidyapith hostel's fourth floor from Jan 2013, following assurance from Kartik Maharaj that she would be hired. She alleged that he raped her on the vacant floor, promising permanent employment. In June 2013, the woman said, she got pregnant and was forced to undergo an abortion at private facility in Behrampore. She claimed head teacher Subhadra Mondal and another colleague were in attendance. She was then asked to vacate the hostel, and was promised that she would get a salary at home. The payments ceased, though she continued visiting the ashram fortnightly until 2019. Two persons took me on a four wheeler promising that they will take me to Maharaj and but going some distance they pushed me from the SUV, and warned me not try to contact him anymore." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Cuối cùng, chơi miễn phí game chiến thuật hay nhất 2025! Responding to the allegations, Kartik Maharaj said: "Time will reveal everything. This is a conspiracy against me to malign my name and fame. There are so many women employed in our ashram and many female disciples. Ask them; everyone will say we respect women like our mothers. You can even contact the complainant's father or family members." BJP's South Murshidabad district president Malay Mahajan held a press conference supporting the senior monk. "It's a conspiracy against the respected Maharaj following the chief minister's complaint. Her counterparts manufactured this fabricated and false complaint as the Maharaj is good organiser and led a rally of monks against state govt's inability to save Hindus from torture. We condemn this and, if needed, we will start a movement if police harass him in the name of inquiry. " CM Mamata Banerjee had last year accused Kartik Maharaj of fanning communal tensions in Beldanga and intimidating voters at polling stations. Trinamool Congress, in a statement on X, said: "A close ally of @BJP4India, Kartik Maharaj recently awarded the Padma Shri on special recommendation of PM @narendramodi's Govt, stands accused of repeatedly raping a woman inside a school building in Murshidabad. In a country where saints and seers are revered, it is appalling that such individuals are defiling the very sanctity they claim to uphold. We demand a thorough, impartial investigation and the harshest punishment if found guilty. No political proximity should shield the accused. @NCWIndia must break its silence and take immediate cognizance."

Life sentence is rule, death exception, says Cal HC, spares convict the noose

Kolkata: Life sentence was the rule and death an exception, the Calcutta High Court observed on Thursday as it commuted the death sentence awarded to a 33-year-old man convicted of murdering a woman in a hotel room in Bakkhali in 2018 to life term. The division bench of Justice Debangsu Basak and Justice Md Shabbar Rashidi also said that the case did not fall in the 'rarest of rare' category and sentenced Samar Patra to life imprisonment saying even though his involvement in the murder had been established beyond doubt, he could still be reformed. Patra had been booked under section 302 IPC dealing with murder that attracts death sentence or life imprisonment along with a fine. A lower court had on March 22, 2023 convicted him of the murder and awarded a death sentence along with a fine of Rs 5,000. You Can Also Check: Kolkata AQI | Weather in Kolkata | Bank Holidays in Kolkata | Public Holidays in Kolkata "It has been laid down by the Hon'ble Supreme Court time and again that life imprisonment is a rule and death penalty is an exception in awarding sentences in cases where death and life imprisonment are the prescribed punishments," the HC held. The victim and Patra had checked into the hotel together on April 11, 2018. When they did not respond to repeated calls the next day, the hotel manager informed police and the woman was found dead on the bed. The ventilation window in the attached washroom was found broken and Patra was missing. An autopsy revealed the victim had died due to strangulation by ligature, which was ante mortem and homicidal in nature. After his arrest, Patra claimed he found the woman hanging from the ceiling fan when he woke up at night, brought down the body but fled as he was terrified. "As a man of ordinary prudence, it was expected that the appellant should have called upon officials of the hotel and reported the matter to police," the HC observed while upholding his conviction. "The appellant is aged about 33 years. Nothing of unfavourable behaviour has been reported against the appellant, which does not rule out the possibility of reform. The evidence on record does not suggest that the murder of the victim was pre-planned or committed with premeditation and extreme brutality. Rather, the evidence on record shows that the appellant and the victim had visited and stayed together in the hotel on previous occasions as well. Such circumstances belie the existence of any previous enmity between them," the bench held.

Foresters lacked intel to anticipate tiger deaths in MM Hills: Ex-Indian Forest Service officials

Bengaluru: The death of five tigers at Male Mahadeshwara (MM) Hills Wildlife Sanctuary in Chamarajanagar on Thursday — said to be the largest single-day tiger mortality in the state since the launch of Project Tiger in India — has raised several questions over the preparedness of the forest department in the management of the protected areas across Karnataka. Amid the mounting criticism over the deaths, former Indian Forest Service (IFS) officials have pointed out the failure of the forest intelligence in anticipating the incident, especially in a sensitive area like MM Hills that borders the neighbouring Tamil Nadu. Retired principal chief conservator of forests (wildlife) Braj Kishore Singh, who served in Kollegal division as DCF, attributed the deaths to a failure of intelligence. "While elephant poaching or electrocution was known in that area, the killing of tigers is strange and shocking. The death of the tigress and her cubs indicates that forest officials were neither active nor present on the ground," Singh said. You Can Also Check: Bengaluru AQI | Weather in Bengaluru | Bank Holidays in Bengaluru | Public Holidays in Bengaluru Lamenting that in any conflict, it is the tiger that pays the price, Singh said the presence of the tigress and her cubs was a testimony to good conservation, but the administration failed to safeguard it. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Livguard Lithium-X: The Future of Power Backup Livguard Buy Now Undo "Meenyam and Hoogyam are remote areas and connected to Tamil Nadu via a walkable mud road. The beat forest guards should have noticed the kill by the tigress and accordingly sensitised the surrounding villagers. The camera traps in the region may have revealed the presence of the tigress with her cubs as the animal may have been moving in the area for 3 to 4 days. But that was clearly missing at the ground level as a few miscreants resorted to killing tigers by feeding poison," Singh said. Yet another former PCCF, BJ Hosmath, who previously served as project director and field director of Bandipur-Nagarhole tiger reserves, acknowledged that the administration of tiger reserves requires dynamic leadership. "The officer and his team could have anticipated this event by relying on the department's intelligence. Even if you suspect the incident as the handiwork of local villagers, the anger could have been simmering for months. Why did the staff not notice it and report to the higher authorities for suitable action?" A few other officials revealed that the tigress killed the cattle on Tuesday evening and may have been revisiting the carcass with her cubs a day after. "The cattle carcass was seen within a few yards of the main road, and it is strange that the ground staffers failed to notice it and alert the higher authorities of the department," another retired official from the state forest service said.
