Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy is about to get its digital release

Independent27-03-2025

Bridget Jones's Diary first leapt onto our screens in 2001, with a dashing love triangle and some seriously enormous pants. Since then, we have been utterly charmed by Bridget's quest for love and now, 24 years later, we finally have our happy ending – but is it what we expected?
Mad About the Boy is the fourth and final film in the series and sees Bridget, now a widowed mother of two, coping with grief and learning how to love again. If you haven't managed to see it at the cinema, as of today (27 March) the final flick in the film franchise is available for pre-order.
All the things we love about Bridget are still there – including clumsy falls, blue soup, and Hugh Grant in a sports car. What more could you want?
While the film is set to inspire a night of nostalgia, there are some welcome additions in the shape of heartthrob Leo Woodall, known for his roles in The White Lotus and Netflix's One Day. He takes on the role of Bridget's, somewhat younger, love interest.
While the film is now on pre-order for it's digital release, it is also still showing in cinemas. But, before you go running to the cinema to save your seats, make sure you're fully caught up on Bridget Jones's story so far. Here's how to watch the entire Bridget Jones film series.
How to watch 'Mad About the Boy' in the UK
Mad About the Boy was released in cinemas on 13 February, the Valentine's Day gift we all wanted.
Of course, the film stars Renee Zellweger returning to the titular role as Bridget Jones. Having recently lost her long-time love the dashing Mr Darcy (Colin Firth), the film explores the reality of grief, but also shows that once lost, love and joy can still be found again.
In this new flick, Hugh Grant returns to his iconic role as notorious playboy Daniel Cleaver. After having turned down the third film in 2016, he has since publicly stated that the script for this final film was one of the best he had ever read, convincing him to take up the role once again. Alongside him we have two new faces joining the cast: Leo Woodall and Bafta-winning actor Chiwetel Ejiofor, who will form Bridget's newest love triangle.
You can still catch the movie in many cinemas across the country but you can also now pre-order the film for £19.99, so you can enjoy it all from the comfort of your own sofa. It will be officially out for home premiere on 31 March.
Make sure you're fully up to date on Bridget's rocky romantic life before embarking on her latest chapter.
'Bridget Jones's Diary' (2001)
The film that started it all. The very first instalment in the franchise, Bridget Jones's Diary, sees Bridget described as an idiot when it comes to love. Leading her straight to devilish heartbreaker Daniel Cleaver (Grant) and mysterious human rights lawyer Mark Darcy (Firth) who as it turns out, likes her just as she is. It's the one with blue soup, enormous pants and not-so-manly street fights.
Right now you can watch the entire film series for free with a NowTV premium subscription or you can rent or buy the films at both Amazon Prime Video or AppleTV+.
In this sequel, we find Bridget in domestic bliss with Mr Darcey, only for her to inevitably muck it all up within the first 40 minutes and land herself in a Thai prison, naturally.
'Bridget Jones's Baby' (2016)
The third instalment welcomes new addition Jack Qwant, a charming tech CEO played by McDreamy himself Patrick Dempsey of Grey's Anatomy fame. Bridget finds herself in a love triangle and pregnant at 40 and with no clue who the father is. As is expected, chaos ensues.
How to read the Bridget Jones's Diary books
Like most great stories Bridget Jones's Diary was originally a book series written by Helen Fielding (after a successful column in The Independent). The first was published in 1996 and the films stayed pretty close to the plot. The novels detail Bridget's life from a premature spinster at 30, to an unexpected mother at 40, and finally a flailing widow at 50. If you're as obsessed with the series as we are, we suggest you pick up a copy (or four) to soak up every last detail and read them all in order.

Inside Holly Willoughby's future plans as she's left without telly show for first time in years

IT has been an incredibly testing few years for former ITV treasure Holly Willoughby, with her work life as she knew it crumbling around her. For the first time in years the 44-year-old has been left without a TV show - and she's now at a serious crossroads and is poised to start a new chapter in her career. 10 Holly Willoughby is looking to the future now Credit: Getty 10 The star is currently not working with ITV - or Stephen Mulhern Credit: Rex 10 A second series of Bear Hunt will not be renewed Once the princess of ITV, she is currently 'showless' with her beloved ITV for the first time in 21 years. With her time on ITV's This Morning now a distant memory, Holly was looking likely to land a series of lucrative deals with the streamers. But in a further blow - her new Netflix show, Bear Hunt, with Bear Grylls, has been axed. The news comes just weeks after Dancing On Ice was axed and on top of that, she has made the decision to step down from You Bet!, leaving Stephen Mulhern to present alone. She is set to appear briefly in the next series, but will no longer be hosting it. It marks a huge shift in her work with ITV. One option for the star could be a reboot of Record Breakers, which Holly's husband Dan Baldwin is already working on. There is currently no channel attached to the show, which is in its very early stages but sources say it would be a "perfect fit". A telly insider said: "Record Breakers is likely to be a prime time hit and it would make perfect sense for Holly to take the reins. "She has worked alongside Dan before and the pair know what it takes to make great telly." Watch moment Holly Willoughby drops clue over Dancing on Ice's future after series 17 finale She has also been linked to a reboot of Cilla Black's best-known show, Blind Date. The Sun told this week how the ITV classic is being revived - and in a surprise twist will go to global streaming service Disney+. Producers want to keep the tradition of a top British female host, with a shortlist including Claudia Winkleman, Holly Willoughby and Davina McCall. Sources say Holly is also being looked at for a new Channel 4 talent show, currently dubbed Secret Singers, which is searching for raw, undiscovered singing talent. Love Productions - the creators of The Great British Bake Off and The Piano - have already put out a casting call. An insider said: "This is likely to be a heartwarming and hugely popular show for all the family. "They are looking for a the perfect host to make sure it's a huge success and it could be perfect timing with Holly's break in TV." 10 The star has had a difficult few years Credit: Rex 10 She is moving on from her days with Phillip Schofield Credit: Rex 10 Holly had been working on Netflix's Celebrity Bear Hunt Credit: Social media 10 Holly has turned to close friend Christine for support Credit: hollywilloughby/Instagram Holly returned to TV last year after 18 months - she had stepped down from presenting work entirely after discovering a plot to kidnap and murder her. Evil Gavin Plumb was given three life sentences for planning to break into her home, then sedate, abduct and kill her and her husband. It came just months after a very public falling out with her co-host Phillip Schofield, which ended with him leaving the show in May 2023. Changes are happening behind the scenes, too. Holly has a big decision to make with her media company Roxy after it was revealed she owes a huge amount to the tax man. Roxy was set up in 2008 by Holly with husband Dan Baldwin. But it wasn't until 2022 that Holly filed the first annual accounts for her all-female ran company after she made the decision to leave former talent agency YMU in 2020. Roxy Media deals with TV show 'production activities', according to its listing on Companies House. But just three years on, Roxy has now been slapped with a winding up order. 10 Holly and husband Dan are parents to three kids Credit: Refer to Caption 10 Holly is set to work alongside husband Dan more Credit: Getty Action against the company was launched in January and the court was told Holly's company has already settled a bill of £377,000 with the taxman, with an unknown amount still owed. In recent weeks Holly has turned to close friend Christine Lampard for support. Like Holly she has enjoyed long stints with ITV, but has also stepped away from them at times. Sources have said that Holly is inspired by Christine's career and her work-life balance and is hoping to emulate that herself. They said: 'Holly is ready for a rebrand and has definitely been looking at those around her for inspiration.' Addressing her incredibly difficult time, Holly recently told The Sunday Times Style Magazine: 'It's been tough. There's no way of sugar-coating it.' Discussing why she felt moving forward was her only option, Holly said: 'Sometimes things go wrong, but you have to keep going for it because that's all you can do.' And it looks like Holly is moving forward - but not before making some serious changes.

Ginny and Georgia fans fume at Netflix as awkward age leap 'ruins' new series

Fan favourite show Ginny and Georgia has returned to Netflix for an all new series which sees more dramatic storylines than ever but not all viewers are happy with the new episodes Ginny and Georgia fans have all said the same thing about brother's age leap in new series. The show has returned to Netflix for its third series, which viewers have waited two years for. Season three picks up just hours on from season two's finale - but not everyone looks the same. Many have pointed out that Ginny's brother Austin has grown up a lot since the last season. Fans have noticed that the actor who plays Austin looks a lot older than nine-years-old which is what he is meant to be in the show. ‌ Actor Diesel La Torraca who plays Austin is actually 14-year-old in real life so is five years older than the character he is playing. Many took to social media to point out the ridiculous age gap thanks to the huge break between filming the two series. ‌ The show has not aired for two years but has picked up where it left off in season two meaning there should be no age change in the character. Taking to X, one viewer wrote: "I fear ginny and georgia is going to have to recast the little brother because this is deeply unserious." As a second said: " #ginnyandgeorgiaS3 know they wrong for having this 14 year old boy play his 9 year old character. They let too much time pass in between filming and it's p***ing me off." "It's so ridiculous cause austin being so young made georgia's reckless choices hit harder. Now he looks the same age ginny's supposed to be playing and it just doesn't give the same effect," a fan pointed out. As a fourth added: "Netflix should stop taking 2+ years between seasons because wdym these two scenes are supposed to be only a few months apart? #ginnyandgeorgia." ‌ Diesel took to his own TikTok page back in May and shared a video of himself which he captioned: "My tryna convince people that Austin is still 9." The Australian-American actor has acted in several roles already despite just being in his teens which include in The Secrets She Keeps, Lambs of God, La Brea and Little Monsters. Actress Antonia Gentry who plays the main character of Ginny commented on how quickly the actor who plays her little brother has grown up. When season 3 filming began in 2024 she shared a side-by-side photo of herself and Diesel after filming season 1 compared with now which showed how much he had grown. ‌ He was originally much shorter than the actress and now he towers above her. Ginny and Georgia first arrived on Netflix back in 2021 and quickly became a fan-loves show. It is now in its third series and has got even more dramatic than before. Series two left off with a murder which mum-of-two Georgia is now being accused of, despite it actually being her son who committed the crime.

Psychological thriller labelled a ‘masterpiece' free to stream on BBC iPlayer

Released in 2021, The Power of the Dog stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Jesse Plemons, and Kirsten Dunst and is based on the 1967 novel of the same name by Thomas Savage. The film follows wealthy ranching brothers Phil (Cumberbatch) and George Burbank (Plemons) who meet widow Rose (Dunst) and her son Peter (Kodi Smit-McPhee) during a cattle drive. The volatile and brash Phil takes a dislike to Rose, but George strikes up a relationship with her – which eventually leads them to marry – and Rose and Peter to move to the Burbank ranch house. As Phil taunts Rose, he appears to take Peter under his wing, but his intentions don't seem as clear-cut to Rose. For those who didn't catch the award-winning hit, or just want to rewatch, it is now free to stream on BBC iPlayer, as well as Netflix. The Power of the Dog proved an instant hit following its premiere at the 2021 Venice Film Festival, garnering a whopping 12 Oscar nominations and seven Golden Globe nods. It is often cited as one of the best films of 2021, and indeed of the decade as a whole, and was named one of the best films of 2021 by the American Film Institute. It currently holds a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with the critics' consensus reading: 'Brought to life by a stellar ensemble led by Benedict Cumberbatch, The Power of the Dog reaffirms writer-director Jane Campion as one of her generation's finest filmmakers.' Metro critic Tori Brazier dubbed the film a 'taut and emotional epic' in her review, adding: 'A rich and detailed character study for each of its excellent four leads – and especially Cumberbatch and Smit-McPhee, who is an admirable scene partner – The Power of the Dog brings everything you'd expect, and hope for, from the writer and director of The Piano. 'The film is like watching a play, so focused is it on the minutiae of seemingly small human actions and emotions, and so nuanced in its storytelling.' The New York Times wrote: 'The Power of the Dog builds tremendous force, gaining its momentum through the harmonious discord of its performances, the nervous rhythms of Jonny Greenwood's score and the grandeur of its visuals.' More Trending USA Today lauded The Power of the Dog a 'picturesque, enthralling exploration of male ego and toxic masculinity, crafted by an extremely talented woman and offering enough nuanced bite to keep it interesting till the very end.' InSession Film said: 'Much has already been said about Jane Campion's western masterpiece, and for good reason. It is indeed truly great. Benedict Cumberbatch gives a career-best performance.' Heaping praise on Cumberbatch, with Ty Burr writing on his Substack: 'How do we know Benedict Cumberbatch is a serious thespian? Because we have no idea who he is offscreen. He's just entirely the role he's playing at any given moment, and those roles change radically.' The Power of the Dog is streaming on BBC iPlayer and Netflix Got a story?
