2026 Ram 1500 Ramcharger electric pickup promises to have it all

Yahoo08-03-2025

Ram has revealed details of its radically engineered 2026 1500 Ramcharger electric full-size pickup, including the vehicle's 690-mile cruising range and 14,000-pound towing capacity.
The vehicle is expected to go on sale in the second half of this year, and while prices are TBD, Ram boss Tim Kuniskis made it clear the plan is to make them competitive with gasoline and diesel pickups like the Ford F-150 and Chevrolet Silverado 1500.
That is despite the Ramcharger's elaborate powertrain, which uses a 92 kWh battery and a gasoline powered electricity generator to deliver the brand's bold performance promises.
But don't expect a Ramcharger priced like a base-model internal-combustion pickup.
The goal is to be 'slightly higher than' the average transaction price of an internal combustion pickup, Kuniskis said, before launching into an ode to a hypothetical electric pickup priced at $69,985.
That would place the hypothetical truck within the price range of conventional F-150s and Silverados, unlike the premium-priced first editions with which other automakers launched their EV pickups.
Kuniskis, who previously ran the Dodge and Ram brands, recently returned to Stellantis after a brief retirement/sabbatical during which some of his previous bosses got broomed for a string of bad decisions. He brings with him a record of success and credibility inside and outside the company.
It's unlikely the wily executive pulled a number of his hat. If there's not a well-equipped production Ramcharger priced within shouting distance of his hypothetical electric pickup by the middle of next year, somebody's gonna have some explaining to do.
The Ramcharger is an electric vehicle with an asterisk, but it's an asterisk pickup buyers may welcome.
Its 149-mile battery range is paltry compared with the battery range of the F-150 Lightning and Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 electric pickups, but the Ramcharger comes with a gasoline-powered generator and 27-gallon fuel tank to produce more electricity when the battery is exhausted.
Combined with the battery, they give the Ramcharger a highway range up to 690 miles.
On top of that, towing increases the drain on batteries. Many pickup owners worry an EV means stopping to charge every couple of hundred miles ― maybe even less.
Towing uses more gasoline, too, but not as much, and it's easier and faster to fill up at a gas station than to recharge at even the quickest available DC fast chargers.
A Ramcharger could tow a horse trailer coast to coast and never stop longer than it took the fill the tank.
The downside to that: Just about all Ramchargers will at least occasionally run on gasoline, and that procures more emissions than driving an EV charged from the electric grid.
A possible upside: Most owners can probably do nearly all their daily driving using cleaner and less expensive electricity they charge with at home overnight.
More: Stellantis' ex-CEO had total compensation of more than $24M last year
More: Experts: Auto industry can only tolerate Trump tariffs on Mexico, Canada for a few weeks
The Ramcharger's super power is delivering all the benefits EVs promise with none of their potential downside, Kuniskis said.
It provides the towing and long-range performance pickup owners expect with the benefits characteristic of electric power: smooth, quiet operation, immediate torque and strong acceleration.
The generator can send energy to the battery or the two pickup's electric motors, but it's never connected to the wheels, one of the reasons the Ramcharger is an EV rather than a plug-in hybrid. The system's controls won't let the battery run completely out, keeping a reserve to supplement the generator's power if needed towing up a hill, for instance.
The pickup will offer a long list of unusual features:
More torque than what is produced from the most powerful Hemi V8 engine
Four-wheel drive
250 kW front motor
248 kW rear motor
Disconnecting front wheels to switch to two-wheel drive for efficiency
Simulated low range for off-road
Electronic locking rear differential
Ability to power a house, worksite or charge a stranded EV
STLA-F frame reinforced for towing and crash protection
Interior design and controls similar to conventional Ram
Available one-pedal driving
'It does the things people already do with trucks, but even better,' Ram chief truck development engineer Doug Killian said.

Tesla's largest EV plant in the world suffers eighth straight month of declining demand as May sales sink 15%

Outbound volumes from Tesla's GigaShangai factory, which includes exports, sank 15% in May. The drop follows similarly bleak figures out of most of Europe. Although Tesla is increasingly viewed as an AI company, roughly three-fourths of its revenue and gross profit come from selling cars. With two-thirds of the second quarter now in the books, the chance Tesla's EV sales could rebound from its terrible start to the year is swiftly waning. On Thursday data continued to pour in from across the world showing demand for Elon Musk's cars is shrinking in most major markets. One sign of that emerged out of China, where aggregate sales of EVs made in Tesla's largest manufacturing plant worldwide suffered an eighth straight month of declines. According to China's CPCA industry association, outbound volumes from its GigaShangai factory, including exports, sank 15% in May to 61,662 vehicles. It follows similarly bleak figures out of most of Europe. Tesla may have successfully rebranded itself as an AI and robotics company in the eyes of investors, but EV sales still matter because they pay the bills. Its core business accounted for 72% of both revenue and gross profit in the first three months of this year, when volumes dropped to their lowest level in three years. Yet just as sales are crashing, the stock is paradoxically ballooning, with the price rallying by a third since April's terrible Q1 earnings. At $1 trillion, Musk's company is now the ninth most valuable company in the world, worth more than the next 15 largest global carmakers combined. Multiples well above 100 times next year's consensus earnings estimates, like Tesla's, are typically reserved for companies about to see stratospheric earnings growth. In this case, it reflects optimism that Musk is poised to capture Uber and Lyft's ride-hailing market with its robotaxi service scheduled to roll out in the second half across much of the United States. Yet there is no evidence its driverless technology already matches, let alone outperforms, autonomous vehicle leader Waymo, and one well-known Tesla bull sold the remainder of his stockholdings as a result. Citing valuation 'disconnected from underlying fundamentals', Future Fund money manager Gary Black said late last month he exited his position for the first time since 2021 given the risks are firmly to the downside. There are a few bright spots for Tesla car sales, like Norway, the world's most EV-friendly country, that remains loyal to the brand. Australia, a key market where Tesla must compete directly with Chinese brands for western consumers without the help of steep tariffs, likewise saw a 9% gain in May amid soaring demand for the refreshed Model Y. But these individual data points are not reflective of the broader Tesla trend. In most other parts of the world, the picture looks radically different. On Thursday, the United Kingdom followed Germany with an identical 36% decline in Tesla registrations for last month. That leaves Tesla EV sales trackers such as TroyTeslike, one of the most reliable, warning Q2 will likely see a drop of 11% to 395,000 cars in a best-case scenario for Tesla. 'Missed My Bonus By One': Dodge Salesman Says May Was Terrible For Sales. Here's Why

So much for Memorial Day sales. Memorial Day weekend is usually one of the best times of the year to buy a car, as dealerships are eager to move older inventory to make room for fall's new models. But despite big banners and flashy promos, this year was a flop, according to a car salesperson who had an unexpectedly bad sales month. Are tariffs to blame, or is something else scaring off potential buyers? Dodge Salesman Vents About Bad Month In a trending video, Dodge salesman Dalton Stacey (@daltonstaceycars97), who's based in Oklahoma, shared what it's really like to sell cars in this market. Surprise, surprise, it's not pretty. Stacey explained that despite his employer giving the team an extra day to wrap up deals (instead of the cutoff being on Sunday, when customers might still be wavering on a decision), he made way fewer sales than he expected. 'I had so many people back out on me,' Stacey explained. 'It ain't even funny.' Because of all of the reneges, Stacey missed his bonus. What really hurts is that he was just one car shy of making the cutoff. 'Today sucked. May sucked. June better come correct,' Stacey said in the caption, clearly frustrated by the situation. Some people might hear this and think Stacey is making too big a deal about missing a bonus. But most people in the United States live paycheck to paycheck, and if you're relying on that extra income to cover your expenses, not getting it (especially by such a small margin) stings. Why Did People Back Out? Stacey doesn't explicitly state why his customers backed out, but we've got some context that'll help put things in perspective. Cars are getting more expensive—are tariffs to blame? Short answer: yes and no. In April, the average price of a new car jumped by a rare 2.5% to just under $49,000—a sharp rise for just a month's turnaround, Kelley Blue Book (KBB) reported . Even used car pricing increased. KBB described it as 'likely the first, softest wave of a storm.' Why? Tariff-related sticker shock is only a few months or just a few weeks away, depending on the brand. Right now, dealers are trying to get rid of their pre-tariff inventory. But when tariffs hit, vehicles could have up to a 25-percent markup baked in. (That 2.5 percent doesn't look so bad now.) The other factor affecting affordability is loans. Most people don't have the cash on hand to buy a car outright, so they rely on loans. But a good loan (meaning one with a low interest rate) is getting harder to qualify for. So even if you cop a deal, the loan may be what screws you over. No wonder so many people were sending Stacey the 'Actually, I need to think about it' texts. What to Do If You're Thinking About Buying a Car It depends on your situation, but here's a good place to start: If you're ready to buy soon: Shop around now while there's still pre-tariff inventory available, and take advantage of the slow market to negotiate, negotiate, negotiate. If you're using a car loan: Shop around for loan rates and consider getting pre-approved through a credit union or your bank. If you're on the fence: If your vehicle is running fine, then waiting things out could help you avoid peak tariff prices. But have a backup plan, like a budget, in case your car ends up needing a major repair. If you're selling or trading in: You're in a good position here since used inventory is tight. Get multiple quotes and don't forget online retailers like Carvana and CarMax, which may offer you a better price. Buc-ee's opens store an hour from New Orleans

Buc-ee's opens its massive travel center Monday in Mississippi just off Interstate 10 in Pass Christian. Why it matters: It's the popular chain's closest location to New Orleans (it's about one hour away) as it works on building its first two stores in Louisiana. The big picture: Buc-ee's is a cult favorite for road trippers. It's known for clean bathrooms, fresh food and beaver-themed merchandise. The Mississippi location has all the classics, the company says, including Texas barbeque, jerky, fudge, kolaches, pastries and snacks. It also has 120 gas pumps and 24 EV charging stations, according to a press release. The store opens at 6am and will be open 24 hours, seven days a week. By the numbers: It's the company's first store in Mississippi and has one of its largest footprints at 74,000 square feet. Its largest store, which it claims is the world's largest convenience station, is in Luling, Texas, at 75,593 square feet. Until now, the closest one to New Orleans was in Alabama near Mobile. Zoom out: Buc-ee's is a Texas-based chain that has been expanding its footprint nationally. Its first Louisiana store is expected to open in Ruston late next year, a company spokesperson tells Axios. A Lafayette store is projected to open in 2027, the spokesperson says. If you go: Expect crowds and traffic on I-10 near the new store. The Pass Christian location is at 8245 Firetower Road, which is accessed via exit 24 (Menge Avenue) on I-10.
