Tony Christie ‘lucky' to be a musician as he discusses living with dementia
Appearing on Good Morning Britain (GMB) on Thursday, Christie said he was diagnosed with dementia three years ago.
Describing himself as a lifelong cryptic crossword 'fanatic', he said he visited his doctor after noticing he was struggling to complete the puzzles.
He told GMB: 'That's one of the things the doctor said – you're very lucky that you're in the music business.
'Music is one of the things that we recommend for people with dementia – to have music playing – it stops you thinking and worrying.'
Christie, who received the icon award at the O2 Silver Clef Awards in London on Wednesday, said that since being diagnosed: 'I've just carried on.
'Although it's there, I don't think about it. I just carry on with my life.'
His talking about the issue has also had a positive response on others.
Christie added: 'I've been stopped in the street by people saying 'thank you for what you do. My wife now is not ashamed of it. She's not ashamed to come out'.'

ITV presenter Susanna Reid has returned to her broadcasting alma mater after appearing on the BBC 11 years after her exit. The Good Morning Britain host, 54 – who took a small break from the ITV morning show in April – shared her return to behind the BBC news desk on Instagram with a heartfelt caption. Her commentary on Sunday's show also sparked some discourse after she suggested Starmer go on I'm A Celebrity in order to increase his popularity among voters. 'Well I was struck when I heard someone say, 'I quite like Nigel Farage because I saw him on I'm A Celebrity', and I thought perhaps Sir Keir Starmer needs to go on I'm A Celeb in order for voters to know who he is, as the words that seem to be coming out of everyone's mouth is 'I don't know',' she told Kuenssberg. At the time of Reid's exit from the BBC the show's editor Adam Bullimore said: 'BBC Breakfast is a hugely successful programme and Susanna has been part of that. 'We are sorry she's decided to leave and wish her the best for the future.' Grange Hill's Zammo actor Lee MacDonald has revealed a terrifying cancer scare after spotting a "little rash". The actor, 57, appeared on Good Morning Britain and revealed he will have the small mark on his cheek burnt off due to it having pre-cancerous cells. But last year, Lee informed his social media followers that he had been diagnosed with cancer after a similar spot was detected on his face and, within days, was set to receive treatment for the condition. "It's a keratosis, which is a pre-cancerous spot, so I'm going to have it burnt out," he said, before revealing the small spot could turn into cancer if left untreated. This Morning and Loose Women were unaffected by scheduling changes and will remain in their regular slots of 10.30am to 12.30pm and 12.30pm to 1.30pm, respectively. However, Loose Women will broadcast fewer episodes - airing "on a seasonal basis for 30 weeks of the year" according to the network. Now Coleen - who has been a Loose Women panellist since 2000 - has spoken out about the 'devastating' impact the changes will have. She told The Mirror: "Loose Women isn't ending, which I'm so thankful for, but it's changing. "It's going to be very different in the respect of the size of the crew, but it's still running. "Which it should be – there isn't another show that celebrates and supports all women of every size, age, whatever. "But it's heartbreaking to see some of my colleagues not knowing what they're going to do. Many of them have young families and mortgages.' She continued: "You read about it all the time – a chain store's shutting down and 300 people are affected. "You go, oh that's awful. Anyway, what do you want for dinner?', because it doesn't directly affect you.
