Rupee holds near 86.75 against USD as investor focus shifts to rising crude prices
The rupee and attendant hedging costs to minimize the impact of its volatility have hitherto shown little susceptibility to the Middle East conflict, with investors focused on the potential retaliation by Iran to predict the pricing direction for crude oil. The rupee weakened to 86.86 per dollar Monday, before closing at 86.75/$1, about 17 paise weaker.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) likely sold dollars above 86.80/$1 levels, traders said. The rupee traded between 86.66/$1 and 86.86/$1 on Monday.

Brent crude oil prices
hit a five-month peak of $81.40 per barrel earlier in the day but pared gains to be last quoted at $77.4 per barrel, according to Reuters. A rise in crude oil prices is detrimental for inflation in India as the country is a large importer of the commodity.
'The Rupee fell to 86.86/$1 due to higher oil prices in the morning. Oil prices cooled a bit, rupee also strengthened, which gave importers an opportunity to buy dollars for their near term imports. However, strong dollar demand from oil companies put pressure on the currency and the rupee could not appreciate past 86.66/$1,' said Anil Bhansali, head of treasury at Finrex Treasury Advisors.
Traders are expecting the rupee to be in the range of 86.50/$1 to 86.90/$1 on Tuesday, assuming that oil prices do not rise substantially.
Live Events
'With every $10 per barrel increase in oil prices increasing India's current account deficit by 0.4% of GDP… India's current account deficit will likely rise above 2% of GDP if oil prices were to spike,' MUFG Bank said in a note on June 23.
India's current account deficit was at 1.1% of GDP during the October-December 2024 quarter, the latest data shows.

Visakhapatnam: The state govt has finalised tenders worth 62.4 crore for legacy waste projects in the Chittoor, Tirupati, Anantapur, and Gudur clusters, as well as dumpsites under the Nellore and Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporations. Meanwhile, inert materials will replace virgin soil in applications such as road construction, embankments, and filling low-lying areas.

MCD to reintroduce PPP scheme for park maintenance in Delhi
New Delhi: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi intends to go back to the public-private partnership model for maintaining parks with a per-acre payment up to Rs 15,000. In the pre-unified era, the erstwhile south, north, and east municipal corporations had adopted this scheme, paying Rs 13,500 in south, Rs 8,000 in north, and Rs 8,500 in east Delhi for park maintenance. The programme was halted in 2022 when MCD couldn't settle payments under the scheme with the residents' welfare associations. "The proposed reintroduction of the PPP scheme has been sent for financial observations and will be placed in the standing committee soon," said an MCD official on Tuesday. The civic body currently has outstanding dues of Rs 16 crore on this account and instructions have been given to process the payment after receiving updated bills from RWAs. The three zones of Rohini, Keshavpuram and Narela account for around Rs 10 crore of the dues since 2019. "Due to lack of budgeting in the previous years, the pending payments could not be processed. However, the matter is under active consideration and pending dues will be cleared, subject to availability of funds," said the official. "Due to bills remaining unpaid for 2-3 years, RWAs were in a quandary, unsure whether to terminate their contract or continue under the present circumstances. Some RWAs were lucky to have bills till Dec 2023 settled, though it took them dogged pursuance," disclosed an RWA member from East of Kailash. RWAs claimed that MCD lacked even the resources and personnel to remove green waste from parks or the equipment for basic pruning and mowing. Some RWAs are still paying from their own funds to maintain the parks, fearing that a break in maintenance will cause their deterioration. MCD officials revealed there is a plan under way to transfer parks bigger than three acres to private concessionaires for upkeep. "In Karol Bagh zone, we launched a pilot project and called applications from expert agencies to maintain 41 parks. The pilot phase involves allocating 94 acres of land to an agency responsible for engaging staff and planting trees at an estimated cost of Rs 3.6 crore," said an official. Similar steps will be taken in the other 11 zones where the selected agency will be responsible for maintaining greenery, cleaning and sweeping the lawns regularly and transporting the green waste to the waste processing centres. Plants will be provided by MCD from its nurseries.
