Investigation ordered into death of mum found unresponsive in her jail cell after murdering young daughter
A community is reeling after a mother accused of fatally stabbing her three-year-old daughter died in custody, sparking a corrective services review.
A vigil to remember 'beautiful little girl' Sophia Rose near Bundaberg in southern Queensland was held before locals heard the tragic news of her mother Lauren Ingrid Flanigan's death.
Queensland Premier David Crisafulli on Monday said 'some explanations' were needed over the Brisbane death in custody, with a review underway.
Emergency services found Sophia outside a home with several stab wounds on May 26 and she died at the scene.
After being charged with her daughter's murder, Flanigan was found unresponsive in her cell at Brisbane Women's Correctional Centre on May 30.
The 32-year-old had suffered a 'medical emergency' in her cell before being rushed to Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane where she died two days later on Sunday.
Queensland Corrective Services on Monday said a report would be prepared for the coroner, describing it as 'standard practice for all deaths in custody'.
Mr Crisafulli said questions needed to be answered in a 'full and thorough' investigation into Flanigan's death to ensure the incident was not brushed 'under the carpet'.

'This incident proves that there are some explanations that are needed,' he told reporters on Monday.
'We owe it to everyone involved, people who work in the facility, families of people who have tragically lost their life, to get to the bottom of it.'
He said the corrective services system needed to be reviewed in the wake of Flanigan's death.
'For those who do need to be held in custody, we have a duty to provide safe facilities,' he said.
'I think it's important that we don't brush it under the carpet.'
The Moore Park Beach community is grieving after coming together to celebrate Sophia on Sunday.
Hundreds came dressed in pink and with sparkles, Sophia's favourite things, at the gathering organised by Bundaberg local Trish Mears.
Sophia was remembered for her love of dance and a child who had an 'absolute love of life'.

'She was just a beautiful little girl who was just full of life and lit up a room when she walked into it,' Ms Mears told AAP.
Friends, family and supporters blew bubbles and wrote messages in the sand while Sophia's favourite song, 'Sky Full of Stars' by Coldplay, played.
'It was absolutely beautiful and I could certainly feel her spirit there,' Ms Mears said.
The vigil aimed to kickstart the healing process for the grieving community with many attendees who did not know each other sharing hugs and kind words, Ms Mears said.
But the news of Flanigan's death ensured Sunday ended on a 'tragic' note, she said.
Ms Mears, the president of Moore Park Beach Arts Inc, said the community would also honour Sophia at their local festival in August.
A GoFundMe set up for Sophia's father and siblings has so far raised $55,000.

Decapitated body of missing escort is found and her security guard client is arrested – as he gives harrowing confession
A WOMAN who vanished in Italy last month has been found brutally decapitated - after weeks of national concern over her disappearance. The body of Denisa Maria Adas Paun, 30, was discovered on Wednesday in a suitcase among brambles, her head found separately miles away in a field. 5 5 5 Adas was a Romanian national who lived in Italy's capital of Rome and worked as an escort, according to the prosecutor's office. She disappeared on May 15 from the Tuscan town of Prato, where she is said to have travelled for work. Vasile Frumuzache, a Romanian-born 32-year-old security guard, reportedly confessed to the horrific crime. Frumuzache was charged with murder and concealment of a corpse. The married father-of-two claimed to police that Adas threatened to tell his wife of their relationship unless he gave her €10,000 (£8,417). 'That's why I killed her,' he allegedly told police. Frumuzache strangled her, then used a knife to decapitate her before placing the body in a rubbish bag and stuffing it into a suitcase, Italian news outlet Corriere Fiorentino reports. The next day, he reportedly set fire to her head in a garden using gasoline. Adas gave her mother a call on May 15 during which she "seemed calm". Greek tourist 'was stabbed to death on his doorstep for his man bag after attackers followed him home from West End nightclub'
A Greek tourist who was stabbed on the way home from a West End nightclub was killed for his man bag, a court has heard. Antonios Antoniadis, 26, was attacked as he got out of an Uber following a night out at 32 Portland Place in Marylebone, London last July. A group of five killers had been sitting in a stolen Kia Sportage looking for a victim to rob when they saw the holidaymaker walk past, jurors at the Old Bailey heard. Joshua McCorquodale, 20, Shian Johnson, 25, Sofian Alliche, 20, Alfie Hipple, 18, and an unnamed 17-year-old then allegedly followed him all the way to his friend's house in New Cross, southeast London, before four attempted to take the item while one sat in the car. Mr Antoniadis then struck one of them with a brandy bottle, before he was stabbed and left on the ground as the group sped off in the vehicle, which had been seen outside the club for several hours ahead of the attack, the court heard. The visitor survived for two weeks in hospital before dying of his injuries on July 21, 2024. All five accused deny murder and conspiracy to rob. Prosecutor Bill Emlyn Jones said: 'Mr Antoniadis was here in London on holiday, a tourist who had come on holiday from his home in Greece. 'He had come with a couple of his friends, Maria and Tia, they were spending the week seeing the city, staying with a friend, having some fun. 'That night, they ended up in a nightclub in the West End called 32 Portland Place, not far from Oxford Circus. It was it seemed quite a night out - they didn't even get to the club until just after 4am and they didn't leave the club until about 8.15am. 'As they travelled out of central London, they had no idea that they were being followed. They had no idea that five young men had been hanging around outside that nightclub all night in a stolen car looking for someone they could rob. 'They followed him for over half an hour, all the way to Florence Terrace, New Cross. 'As Maria struggled to find the key to open the door, Antonis was approached by four figures in hoods and balaclavas, four of them, because one of the five, the driver, had stayed in the car to turn it around and prepare for their getaway. 'Antonis resisted, and struggled, and at one point managed to hit one of his attackers with a brandy bottle he was still holding from his night out. 'At least two of the attacking group had with them large knives. One of them shouted "ching him", in other words, stab him. 'Antonis was by now on the ground, one his hands and knees, surrounded by the four robbers who were punching and kicking him, and then they stabbed him. 'He suffered cuts and bruises to his face and head, wounds to his arms as he tried to defend himself, and he was stabbed in the middle of the chest he suffered a large and deep stab wound to his right thigh which completely severed his femoral artery and caused catastrophic blood loss. 'His four attackers then ran back to the waiting car, they jumped in and their driver sped them away, leaving their victim bleeding to death behind them.' He added that the prosecution's case described them as equally responsible for the murder. 'They were clearly prepared to use violence to try and pull off the robbery, and given that they had at least two large knives between them, they were clearly prepared to use really serious violence if the need arose,' Mr Jones said. 'The need did arise, at least as far as they were concerned, and so they used their knives, they stabbed Antonis, and they killed him.' The trial continues and is set to last six weeks.
