India bonds steady as traders await fresh cues

MUMBAI: Indian government bonds little changed on Wednesday in the absence of any fresh domestic triggers and shrugging off a decline in U.S. Treasury bonds.
The yield on the benchmark 10-year bond was at 6.3090% as of 10:05 a.m. IST after closing at 6.3090% on Tuesday. The five-year 6.75% 2029 bond yield was steady at 5.9875%, compared with Tuesday's close of 5.9880%.
Bond yields move inversely to prices.
'Bonds should remain rangebound for now as there aren't many domestic triggers. U.S. Treasury moves will be key,' a trader with a state-run bank said.
The U.S. 10-year bond yield rose 1.4% to 4.49% on Monday, up 15 basis points in four sessions and nearing the crucial 4.50% mark.
The yield edged slightly lower in Asian hours on Tuesday, hovering at 4.47%.
U.S. consumer prices rose 0.3% in June, marking the largest increase in five months.
India bonds yields steady around key levels as RBI to mop up liquidity
The uptick, driven by higher costs for some goods, suggests that tariffs are starting to show an impact on inflation, potentially prompting the Federal Reserve to hold off on rate changes until September.
Meanwhile, foreign investors increased allocation to India's four-year paper as they found the yields attractive, traders said.
These investors net bought more than 13 billion rupees ($151.2 million) of 7.26% 2029 bond in the last two trading sessions, CCIL data showed.
Rates
India's shorter overnight index swap rates (OIS) barely moved in early deals, while the 5-year rate saw paying pressure due to elevated U.S. Treasury yields.
The one-year was at 5.53% and the two-year OIS rate at 5.50%. The liquid five-year rose 1 basis point to 5.74%.

Rupee improves against US dollar

The Pakistani rupee improved slightly against the US dollar, appreciating 0.04% in the inter-bank market on Friday. At close, the currency settled at 284.87, a gain of Re0.1. On Thursday, the currency settled at 284.97. Internationally, the US dollar headed for a second straight weekly gain against major peers, buoyed by some solid US economic data that supported the view that the Federal Reserve can afford to wait a while longer before cutting interest rates again. The yen remained on the back foot heading into upper house elections on Sunday in Japan, with polls suggesting the ruling coalition is at risk of losing its majority - a development that would stir policy uncertainty and complicate tariff negotiations with the US. Bitcoin hovered just below $120,000, after this week pushing to an all-time peak of $123,153.22, with Congress passing a bill to create the framework for dollar-pegged stablecoins. The dollar index, which measures the currency against six leading counterparts, held steady at 98.456 as of 0038 GMT, keeping it on track for a 0.64% weekly advance and building on the previous week's 0.91% rally. The dollar index climbed as high as 98.951 on Thursday for the first time since June 23 after US data showed retail sales rebounded more than expected in June and first-time applications for unemployment benefits dropped to a three-month low last week. Earlier in the week, a report showed consumer prices increased by the most in five months in June, suggesting tariffs were starting to have an impact on inflation. Traders currently price about 45 basis points of rate cuts for the remainder of the year, down from closer to 50 basis points at the start of the week. At the same time, the dollar index remains 9.3% lower over the course of this year, following a steep selloff in March and April when President Donald Trump's erratic trade policies undermined confidence in US assets, sending the currency, Treasury bonds and Wall Street all lower. Oil prices, a key indicator of currency parity, Oil prices were little changed on Friday after rising in the previous session as concerns drone attacks on northern Iraqi oil fields will cut supply vied with worries of potential demand declines amid uncertainty in U.S. tariff policy. Brent crude futures eased 4 cents, or 0.06%, to $69.48 a barrel as of 0239 GMT, US West Texas Intermediate crude futures edged down 3 cents, or 0.04%, to $67.51 a barrel. This is an intra-day update

Indian Apple reseller Ample to grow revenue by a third as it expands presence, portfolio, CEO says

Indian Apple reseller Ample is banking on store expansion and adding more brands and clients to achieve 35% revenue growth in fiscal year 2026, its chief executive said. The Bengaluru-based firm, which supplies tech products such as Apple computers to over 1,500 clients including SAP, Broadcom, Infosys, and Wipro, operates more than 120 stores across India. Nearly 50 of these sell Apple products, while others showcase brands like Under Armour and ASICS. The firm plans to expand its footprint to approximately 175 stores across brands within three years, Ample founder and CEO Rajesh Narang said on Monday, though he declined to specify a target for Apple-only stores. Ample's revenue stood at 17 billion rupees ($197.33 million) for the fiscal year ended March 31. The company is focusing on partnerships with global capability centers, hubs that manage operations, finance, and research for large multinational firms, to drive growth, Narang added. Apple, which reported nearly $8 billion in sales in India for the year through March 2024, operates its own stores in New Delhi and Mumbai. Other resellers in the market include Aptronix and iPlanet. While Apple also plans to expand its presence in India, Narang said that would benefit partners like Ample, as the market tends to grow with the brand's presence. The firm plans to list on stock exchanges within five years to fund its growth strategy. 'With our growth ambition, there will be a need for capital,' Narang said.

Pause in dollar rally offers relief to Indian rupee after 86 breach

MUMBAI: The Indian rupee is set to open higher on Friday, tracking a broader recovery in Asian peers and supported by a pause in the U.S. dollar index's near-term uptrend. The 1-month non-deliverable forward indicated an open in the 86.00-86.02 range versus 86.0750 on Thursday, marking the rupee's first sub-86 finish in nearly a month. 'Asia will help (the rupee) at the open. However, I'd fade any downside (on USD/INR),' a currency trader at a bank said. 'Positioning and risk-reward favour upside, and this looks (like a) buy-on-dips market right now.' The dollar index fell about 0.2% in Asia to 98.40, helping most Asian currencies climb higher. The dollar index had rallied on Thursday, approaching the 99 mark, after robust U.S. data spurred expectations that the Federal Reserve will be in no rush to resume rate cuts. Upbeat U.S. retail sales in June pointed to a pickup in economic activity, while job claims fell to a three-month low, reinforcing signs of steady labour market strength. U.S. economic data released on Thursday 'continues to signal resilience,' MUFG Bank said, while noting the muted reaction in U.S. Treasury yields. Markets were largely unchanged about the Fed outlook, with no major shift in pricing for a September rate cut or the cumulative rate cuts expected in 2025. Despite the dip in the dollar index on Friday, the gauge is up 0.6% this week after last week's near 1% rally. Markets continue to hold net short positions on the U.S. dollar, and an unwinding of those short dollar positions could provide support for the U.S. currency, MUFG Bank noted.
