TORONTO (AP) — Mike Yastrzemski homered in his first at-bat with Kansas City, Michael Wacha limited Toronto to a run in eight innings in his longest outing of the season and the Royals beat the Blue Jays 9-3 on Friday night. Acquired from San Francisco just before the trade deadline Thursday, Yastrzemski had a two-run shot off Kevin Gausman (7-8) in the second inning to make it 2-1. Wacha (5-9) allowed three hits and stuck out five, helping the Royals improve to .500 for the first time since June 20. He gave up one run for the fourth consecutive start. Emma Raducanu was dumped out of the National Bank Open in Montreal as she went down 6-2-6-1 to American fifth seed Amanda Anisimova. Raducanu had won both of their previous meetings, but rarely looked like extending that run as she held her serve just once in either set. Wimbledon finalist Anisimova came from 40-15 down to break Raducanu's serve in the second game of the match and, although the British number one broke back immediately, she was unable to fashion another break point in the contest. Anisimova broke again to make it 3-1 and added a third break to wrap up the set. Her dominance continued in the second set as Raducanu won just eight points on her own serve, avoiding the whitewash after losing the first five games before Anisimova served out for a place in the fourth round. She will face 10th seed Elina Svitolina or Anna Kalinskaya in the last 16. Wimbledon champion Iga Swiatek needed little more than an hour to complete a 6-2 6-2 victory over Germany's Eva Lys, but Jessica Pegula's bid for a third straight Montreal title was ended by world number 386 Anastasija Sevastova. Witt, Wacha push Royals to 9-3 win over Blue Jays
TORONTO — Bobby Witt Jr. belted a three-run homer and veteran starter Michael Wacha pitched a three-hitter to lift the Kansas City Royals to a 9-3 win in the opener of a three-game series against the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday. Witt's blow came off Toronto starter Kevin Gausman (7-8) and was the second of four homers for the visitors as the Royals (55-55) won their third straight. The Blue Jays (64-47) were without George Springer for a fourth straight game. He was placed on the seven-day concussion injured list on Friday, retroactive to July 29. The home team snatched the lead in the first inning with Vladimir Guerrero Jr.'s 16th, a 428-foot blast into the left-field seats. But a two-run homer from Mike Yastrzemski in the second inning put the Royals up for good. Witt followed with his three-run homer in the third. In his eight innings, the 34-year-old Wacha (5-9) allowed only two hits after the Guerrero homer with no walks and five strikeouts. Gausman managed to last six innings despite the rough beginning. He surrendered his five runs on six hits and no walks with five strikeouts. Daulton Varsho (hamstring) returned from his two-month stay on the sidelines to play centre.
