Teetan ready to convert Ka Ying Rising chance: ‘I just want to enjoy the ride'

Karis Teetan knows better than most the importance of taking your opportunities in the Hong Kong racing pressure-cooker, but the Mauritian jockey certainly isn't putting too much pressure on himself ahead of his ride aboard the world's best sprinter at Sha Tin on Sunday.
While there is serious expectation that comes with riding such a hot favourite in a Hong Kong Group One race, the fact Teetan knows he'll be handing the reins back to Zac Purton whatever happens in the Queen's Silver Jubilee Cup (1,400m) is allowing him to approach the task with an air of freedom.
'There's no need to put too much pressure on myself. I know that I'm riding one of the best horses in the world and I just want to enjoy the ride,' said Teetan, who partners Ka Ying Rising for the second time in the absence of the injured Purton.
Teetan's found himself in contrasting positions on the Hong Kong jockey merry-go-round – he's lost plenty of rides on top-line gallopers while also being in the right place at the right time on a number of occasions – and he's ready to to seize the unexpected opportunity to snare his first Group One victory since his QE II Cup (2,000m) success aboard Romantic Warrior in April 2022. — HKJC Racing (@HKJC_Racing) June 2, 2024
'My last Group One was Romantic Warrior but this is Hong Kong. Things will go your way sometimes and then sometimes things don't go your way. You just have to wait, be patient,' said Teetan, who took out the Group Three Sha Tin Vase (1,200m) aboard Ka Ying Rising last June.
'Unfortunately this is in a difficult situation with what happened with Zac and all the boys, but thank goodness they're all OK and I'm just grateful to be able to pick up the ride.
'It's very exciting, 100 per cent. I know how good this horse is and of course I'm looking forward to it. I just want to go in focused and make sure everything goes to plan.'
Standing between Teetan and victory in the Queen's Silver Jubilee Cup are the likes of Helios Express, reigning champion California Spangle and Howdeepisyourlove, as well as the outside gate of nine and the need for the David Hayes-trained Ka Ying Rising to handle the step up to seven furlongs for the first time.
'The gate is a challenge and stepping up to 1,400m is a question mark, but as David says he's a freak and he overcomes everything that is thrown at him,' Teetan said.
'I'm just gong to ride him like I've done before and how Zac has ridden him and I think the horse himself knows how good he is.'

The last two-year-old to win the Nunthorpe was Kingsgate Native in 2007, but trainer Ger Lyons clearly has confidence behind Lady Iman, with the filly carrying a featherweight after being supplemented. He ran riot in the Group Two Sapphire Stakes (1,000m) at the Curragh last month, defeating a reopposing Mgheera by two lengths after being up with the pace throughout. The speedy Sergei Prokofiev colt will be suited by a race of this nature and his trainer Adrian Murray is confident he will run another big race. 'He's going to York and it looks an open race,' said Murray. 'He's got a similar profile to Power Blue actually and he always shows up on the day, he never runs a bad race. 'His form stands up well and win or lose he will be bang there, even in defeat he's been a brilliant horse for us.' There is also an international element to the race with Australia's Asfoora continuing her British campaign for trainer Henry Dwyer. She won the Group One King Charles III Stakes (1,000m) at Royal Ascot last year and followed up with a close fourth in this race, though she does not arrive at York in quite the same form this time around. Fifth at Royal Ascot behind American Affair, she then only managed seventh behind JM Jungle at Glorious Goodwood last time; she needs to rediscover her best to be winning this contest. There is also simulcast action from Newmarket on Friday, with the feature being the Listed Hong Kong Jockey Club World Pool Hopeful Stakes (1,200m). All eyes will be on the Karl Burke-trained Lethal Levi, who drops in class after a short-head defeat in the Group Two Greenlands Stakes (1,200m) at the Curragh two starts back. 'He has been even better since we added blinkers last year,' Burke said. 'He had been giving away some races at the start, but he jumps much cleaner now. He is a terrific old horse.' In opposition are the likes of improving handicapper Ten Pounds and Godolphin's Dubai Treasure, who improved to win a competitive handicap at Glorious Goodwood last month. Ferrous and Iberian are others who drop in class, while course regular Invictus Gold and Elmonjed are others to consider in a wide-open affair.

Ombudsman wins rematch with Delacroix to secure thrilling International Stakes at York

Photo: Reuters Ombudsman emphatically turned the tables on Delacroix to win a fascinating Group One International Stakes (2,051m) at York on day one of their Ebor Festival. The John and Thady Gosden-trained star was pipped by Delacroix in a tactical Group One Eclipse Stakes (2,000m) at Sandown last month, but the form was reversed in no uncertain terms. Godolphin ensured the race would be run at a true gallop by introducing Birr Castle as a pacemaker, with Rab Havlin sending him on by over 20 lengths and turning into the straight, the margin was still enormous. After 150-1 pacemaker Qirat stole the Group One Sussex Stakes (1,600m) at Glorious Goodwood, punters were no doubt envisaging a repeat when Birr Castle entered the final 400m still clear. International Stakes a global affair as the Ebor Festival at York kicks off
Shogo Yasuda is hoping his star Danon Decile can climb the mountain to beat British, Irish and French challengers and win the Group One International Stakes (2,051m) race at York on Wednesday. Living up to its name, the International Stakes has attracted top-class horses from across the globe and Danon Decile, who will be ridden by Keita Tosaki, looks to have a brilliant chance. The four-year-old has been absent since a brilliant performance to down multiple Group One winner Calandagan and win the Group One Dubai Sheema Classic (2,410m) in April, where he quickened clear by a length and a quarter.
