Karis Teetan snaps lean run with breakthrough three-timer: ‘I just kept my head down and kept punching along'

Battling a lean run since booting home superstar Ka Ying Rising, Karis Teetan injected new life into his campaign with a breakthrough treble at Sha Tin on Sunday. Since successfully filling in for the injured Zac Purton on Ka Ying Rising in February's Group One Queen's Silver Jubilee Cup (1,400m), the Mauritian jockey had only one winner to his name – Ace Power at Happy Valley on March 19. 'Things have been a bit slow but I just kept my head down and kept punching along,' Teetan said. Teetan's perseverance was rewarded when he notched his first three-timer of the season aboard Top Throne, Good Luck Babe and Mr Cool. Booming run, Mr Cool! 😤 Sporting the same silks as Group 1 star Mr Stunning, Mr Cool wins his first race to give @KarisTeetan a three-timer... #LoveRacing | #HKracing — HKJC Racing (@HKJC_Racing) April 6, 2025 'I thought I had a few decent rides today and some of the draws went my way, too,' said Teetan, who moved to 30 wins for the campaign. 'It's turned out to be a great day.' Top Throne started Teetan's red-letter day with an impressive victory in the second section of the Class Four New Asia Alumni Handicap (1,200m). Backed into $3 favouritism after a close fourth on debut, the David Hayes-trained gelding had a sweet run in the box seat from gate two and pounced on the lead 150m out when hooked out into the clear by Teetan. The three-year-old responded strongly to salute by three-quarters of a length, holding off a late charge from Dazzling Fit with debut winner Mount Everest also running on late for third. 'He ran great in his first run,' Teetan said of Top Throne's debut behind Mount Everest on March 9. 'He actually did many things wrong but to still run where he ran was a great effort and we thought he would always improve from that, which he did.' Teetan followed up in the next race on David Eustace's Good Luck Babe, leading all the way to salute in the Class Four United Alumni Handicap (1,600m). Sporting a familiar set of silks on Mr Cool in the Class Four Morningside Alumni Handicap (1,400m), Teetan clinched his treble when the Frankie Lor Fu-chuen-trained gelding stormed home on his second start. Mr Cool went two better than his debut third to Tactical Command when he ran on powerfully from the back half of the field to beat Etalon Or by three-quarters of a length. 'I said to the owner [Maurice Koo Win-chong] 'this is one of my favourite set of silks' in Hong Kong because of Mr Stunning,' Teetan said, referring to the Koo-owned galloper he booted home in a pair of Group Ones. 'On debut at Happy Valley, he just didn't know where he was but he ran a great race and we knew he would improve a lot. 'You could see today, not many horses won from where he was but the speed was on and I was happy where I was. 'When I asked him he really responded well and I just want to say well done to the connections and well done to all the trainers sticking with me and giving me support – I really appreciate it.'

Ka Ying Rising makes it 10 straight with fighting win: ‘I was seriously just a bit uptight'

Trainer David Hayes was feeling the pinch in the home straight but ultimately Ka Ying Rising had all the answers on his way to a 10th straight victory in Sunday's Group One Queen's Silver Jubilee Cup (1,400m). The brilliant Ka Ying Rising bagged his third Group One success but first under Karis Teetan, who made no mistake aboard the world's best sprinter in the absence of the injured Zac Purton. 'It's unbelievable how this opportunity came up to be sitting on one of the world's best horses,' said Teetan after his first Group One success in almost three years. 'I'm just really thankful that everything worked out well – I think I was just the pilot on him today. GO ON, @KarisTeetan! 🔥 The Mauritian ace guides superstar Ka Ying Rising to a third Group 1 win in the Queen's Silver Jubilee Cup at Sha Tin ahead of Helios Express and Howdeepisyourlove... 🏆#LoveRacing | #HKracing — HKJC Racing (@HKJC_Racing) February 23, 2025 'He flew out of the gate, I wanted him to use the early speed that he has but sort of dropped my hands and he just came back to me pretty easily and he was waiting for me to press the button and, when I did, he produced really well.' After settling outside leader California Spangle from gate nine, Ka Ying Rising went for home at around the 350m. He had Helios Express breathing down his neck approaching the 200m before fending him off to salute by a length and a half, with Howdeepisyourlove close behind in third. 'It was fantastic. I had a nervous moment at the 200m but on the line I think he was holding them very well. It was an enjoyable last 100m but a frightening 200m,' said Hayes. 'I did a little bit of self-monitoring and normally I'm about 68 [beats per minute] through a race but I must say at the 200m I looked down and I was 98. I was seriously just a bit uptight for some reason.' Teetan was ecstatic after his second win aboard Ka Ying Rising, shouting to the crowd as he returned to the winners' circle. 'I want to thank the owner and David and finally Zac. I spoke to him during the week and he was really kind,' Teetan said. 'He said 'just know you're on the best horse and ride him like that and trust him', so thank you to Zac.' After twice lowering the Sha Tin 1,200m track record this season, Ka Ying Rising added another string to his bow by winning his first start at 1,400m in a time of 1:20.33 – 0.41 seconds outside the seven-furlong record. 'I have always said he's a miler but he's just such a good sprinter, [so] I'm a bit loath to change. They were closer to him at the 1,200m than the 1,400m,' said Hayes. 'The good thing about drawing wide, as he always does, Karis was never going to get boxed in. But what I didn't like was the track is running a bit swooperish today. I thought he had to defy a bit of a track trend today. 'It was a little bit like my sons' horse [Mr Brightside winning the Group One Futurity Stakes (1,400m) on Saturday] – there's a little bit of breeze, horses aren't winning from the front and he didn't get one bit of cover for one stride and he was good enough to beat them nearly breaking a track record at a different distance yet again. He's a very special horse. There should be a lot more to come.' Hayes confirmed the Group One Chairman's Sprint Prize (1,200m) on April 27 is Ka Ying Rising's next main target, with a run in March 30's Group Two Sprint Cup (1,200m) a possibility if he pulls up well. 'He's won 10 in a row at basically a month between runs so I'm a bit loath to change if he does well,' said Hayes.

Karis Teetan ready to convert Ka Ying Rising chance: ‘I just want to enjoy the ride'

Karis Teetan knows better than most the importance of taking your opportunities in the Hong Kong racing pressure-cooker, but the Mauritian jockey certainly isn't putting too much pressure on himself ahead of his ride aboard the world's best sprinter at Sha Tin on Sunday. While there is serious expectation that comes with riding such a hot favourite in a Hong Kong Group One race, the fact Teetan knows he'll be handing the reins back to Zac Purton whatever happens in the Queen's Silver Jubilee Cup (1,400m) is allowing him to approach the task with an air of freedom. 'There's no need to put too much pressure on myself. I know that I'm riding one of the best horses in the world and I just want to enjoy the ride,' said Teetan, who partners Ka Ying Rising for the second time in the absence of the injured Purton. Teetan's found himself in contrasting positions on the Hong Kong jockey merry-go-round – he's lost plenty of rides on top-line gallopers while also being in the right place at the right time on a number of occasions – and he's ready to to seize the unexpected opportunity to snare his first Group One victory since his QE II Cup (2,000m) success aboard Romantic Warrior in April 2022. Ka Ying Rising has Group 1 targets next season! 😏 The gifted 3YO secures the G3 Sha Tin Vase in style with @KarisTeetan for David Hayes... #HKracing — HKJC Racing (@HKJC_Racing) June 2, 2024 'My last Group One was Romantic Warrior but this is Hong Kong. Things will go your way sometimes and then sometimes things don't go your way. You just have to wait, be patient,' said Teetan, who took out the Group Three Sha Tin Vase (1,200m) aboard Ka Ying Rising last June. 'Unfortunately this is in a difficult situation with what happened with Zac and all the boys, but thank goodness they're all OK and I'm just grateful to be able to pick up the ride. 'It's very exciting, 100 per cent. I know how good this horse is and of course I'm looking forward to it. I just want to go in focused and make sure everything goes to plan.' Standing between Teetan and victory in the Queen's Silver Jubilee Cup are the likes of Helios Express, reigning champion California Spangle and Howdeepisyourlove, as well as the outside gate of nine and the need for the David Hayes-trained Ka Ying Rising to handle the step up to seven furlongs for the first time. 'The gate is a challenge and stepping up to 1,400m is a question mark, but as David says he's a freak and he overcomes everything that is thrown at him,' Teetan said. 'I'm just gong to ride him like I've done before and how Zac has ridden him and I think the horse himself knows how good he is.'

Teetan ready to convert Ka Ying Rising chance: ‘I just want to enjoy the ride'

Well-versed in the oft-fickle nature of the Hong Kong jockey merry-go-round, the Mauritian is determined to enjoy his opportunity to jump back aboard the world's best sprinter by Sam Agars on Saturday, February 22, 2025 12:00 PM Karis Teetan enjoys his victory aboard Ka Ying Rising last season.
