Karis Teetan snaps lean run with breakthrough three-timer: ‘I just kept my head down and kept punching along'

Battling a lean run since booting home superstar Ka Ying Rising, Karis Teetan injected new life into his campaign with a breakthrough treble at Sha Tin on Sunday.
Since successfully filling in for the injured Zac Purton on Ka Ying Rising in February's Group One Queen's Silver Jubilee Cup (1,400m), the Mauritian jockey had only one winner to his name – Ace Power at Happy Valley on March 19.
'Things have been a bit slow but I just kept my head down and kept punching along,' Teetan said.
Teetan's perseverance was rewarded when he notched his first three-timer of the season aboard Top Throne, Good Luck Babe and Mr Cool.

'I thought I had a few decent rides today and some of the draws went my way, too,' said Teetan, who moved to 30 wins for the campaign. 'It's turned out to be a great day.'
Top Throne started Teetan's red-letter day with an impressive victory in the second section of the Class Four New Asia Alumni Handicap (1,200m).
Backed into $3 favouritism after a close fourth on debut, the David Hayes-trained gelding had a sweet run in the box seat from gate two and pounced on the lead 150m out when hooked out into the clear by Teetan.
The three-year-old responded strongly to salute by three-quarters of a length, holding off a late charge from Dazzling Fit with debut winner Mount Everest also running on late for third.
'He ran great in his first run,' Teetan said of Top Throne's debut behind Mount Everest on March 9.
'He actually did many things wrong but to still run where he ran was a great effort and we thought he would always improve from that, which he did.'
Teetan followed up in the next race on David Eustace's Good Luck Babe, leading all the way to salute in the Class Four United Alumni Handicap (1,600m).
Sporting a familiar set of silks on Mr Cool in the Class Four Morningside Alumni Handicap (1,400m), Teetan clinched his treble when the Frankie Lor Fu-chuen-trained gelding stormed home on his second start.
Mr Cool went two better than his debut third to Tactical Command when he ran on powerfully from the back half of the field to beat Etalon Or by three-quarters of a length.
'I said to the owner [Maurice Koo Win-chong] 'this is one of my favourite set of silks' in Hong Kong because of Mr Stunning,' Teetan said, referring to the Koo-owned galloper he booted home in a pair of Group Ones.
'On debut at Happy Valley, he just didn't know where he was but he ran a great race and we knew he would improve a lot.
'You could see today, not many horses won from where he was but the speed was on and I was happy where I was.
'When I asked him he really responded well and I just want to say well done to the connections and well done to all the trainers sticking with me and giving me support – I really appreciate it.'

Le Court makes history for Africa at Tour de France

Le Court makes history for Africa at Tour de France Kim Le Court says her historic stage win has been a "dream start" to the Tour. Photo: AFP Mauritian Kim Le Court has become the first African to win a stage on the women's Tour de France. It was a case of double celebration for the 29-year-old who took the fifth stage honours in a sprint to reclaim the leader's yellow jersey. Le Court edged Dutch duo Demi Vollering and Anna van der Breggen after a hilly 166km ride, the longest of the Tour, from Chasseneuil-du-Poitou Futuroscope to Gueret. Overnight leader Marianne Vos lost yellow to the AG Insurance-Soudal team leader after finishing eighth, 33 seconds adrift, on the day. Le Court, who had a brief spell already at the top of the general classification after stage two, now leads France's Pauline Ferrand-Prevot by 18 seconds. "It's really been a dream start to the Tour. The stage win, the yellow jersey," said Le Court. "I wasn't even thinking about it when we started in Brittany. "As for what happens next, we'll see, since I don't know my limits in the mountains, this Tour being my first major stage race where my team has asked me to compete for the overall classification," he added. Vollering, the Tour winner in 2023 and favourite for this edition, is third at 23sec after recovering from a heavy fall on Monday. Last year's winner, Poland's Katarzyna Niewiadoma, took fourth in the stage to sit well placed at 24sec off the overall lead. Thursday's sixth stage is a mountainous 123.7km ride from Clermont-Ferrand to Ambert featuring three ascents including the category one climb up the Col du Beal, with the race finishing on Sunday. Hugh Bowman eyes best Hong Kong season before a freshen up, and maybe some rides, in Europe

A 'delighted' Hugh Bowman is itching to head off to Europe for a break and maybe even a few race rides, but first he's keen to better his Hong Kong personal best of 69 wins in a season. The star Australian sits on 68 victories with three meetings to go in the 2024-25 campaign and he has six chances to add to his tally at Happy Valley on Wednesday night. 'I'm delighted – it's been a pretty consistent year for me,' said the jockey. 'It's been a good, consistent flow of winners with the exception of being a little bit quiet through the November-December period and a little bit quiet through June. 'It's been an improvement on last year, but bearing in mind that last year I was injured for a period of time and I did struggle with careless riding suspensions. I've had a few this year but it hasn't been quite to the same extent as last year. 'That's an area I'd like to improve on again next season. I set a goal to ride 100 winners. I think that might have been a little bit ambitious, actually – I won't do that again – but I do think I can do better than I've done this year.' Bowman rates Enjoy Golf in the first section of the Class Four Garden Handicap (1,200m) and Prince Alex in the Class Four Green Handicap (1,650m) among his better hopes at the midweek meeting. Enjoy Golf makes all for an impressive first win as @HugeBowman collects a race-to-race double at Sha Tin... ✌️ #HKracing — HKJC Racing (@HKJC_Racing) June 8, 2024 'Enjoy Golf has been a good horse to me although he's only won one race. I think I've had four seconds on him, which is always a bit concerning,' said Bowman. 'But his only go at Happy Valley was at 1,650m, which is too far, so he's an interesting runner and he's got to be a chance. And Prince Alex freshened up, a long time between runs from gate one – they're probably the chances, those two.' While Bowman is counting down the days until his flight out of Hong Kong, he admits he'll likely get itchy feet at some stage during the off-season and potentially look to do some riding while travelling. 'I can't wait to get away. It's been a long year for everyone but in saying that, I feel like I'm finishing the year full of enthusiasm,' he said. 'For me, two months [off] is a bit too long, but it is what it is. We'll have a break, freshen up and come back and hit the ground running. If the opportunity arises, I'll look to ride in Europe, whether in the UK or possibly France.'
