Shohei Ohtani thought he was ‘in trouble' before Dave Roberts gifted him a toy Porsche
The last time Shohei Ohtani thought he might be in trouble was when his name was linked to a federal investigation into illegal sports gambling in March 2024. His name was soon cleared by authorities, who charged and convicted Ohtani's interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara, in federal court with surreptitiously stealing more than $17 million from the Dodgers superstar to pay off an Orange County bookmaker. Ohtani wondered if something was amiss Wednesday when manager Dave Roberts summoned him before the Dodgers' home game against the New York Mets. But not for long. Ohtani rushed into Roberts' office, saw a bright pink remote-controlled toy car on the ground and immediately started laughing. 'I have a gift for you,' Roberts told him. 'Actually, for your daughter.' 'For my daughter? OK, thank you.' Ohtani replied. 'This is from my wife [Tricia] and me to you and your family and your daughter,' Roberts said. 'So, we have jokes always. This is a little bit of a joke. It's a Porsche. This is going to be your daughter's first car.' 'Thank you, I love it,' Ohtani said. He tapped the car with his hand and said in English, 'I thought I'm in trouble. Some trouble,' evoking laughter from Roberts and others in the room. Ohtani had gifted Roberts a tiny toy Porsche a year ago when he broke Roberts' franchise record of seven home runs by a Japanese-born player, placing it in the manager's parking lot space as a practical joke. When Ohtani signed with the Dodgers in December 2023, he gifted Ashley Kelly, the wife of pitcher Joe Kelly, a Porsche — not a toy — for Kelly giving up No. 17. Roberts kidded Ohtani about gifting him when the modest record was inevitably broken, and the new Dodgers slugger obliged with the toy. It took Roberts — born in Naha, Okinawa to a Japanese mother and American father — a year to reciprocate. 'Shohei has been very gracious and we've got this long-running practical joke,' Roberts said on video. 'This is more of a sincere gesture, not necessarily a practical joke but I wanted to present it to him.' Ohtani and his wife, Mamiko Tanaka, have not revealed the name of their daughter, who was born April 19. 'I am so grateful to my loving wife who gave birth to our healthy beautiful daughter,' Ohtani wrote on social media at the time. 'To my daughter, thank you for making us very nervous yet super anxious parents.' Super anxious? Wait until she starts driving.

Diddy's Ex-Assistant Claims Rapper Kidnapped Her, Said ‘We're Gonna Go Kill' Kid Cudi
The trial of Sean 'Diddy' Combs continued in New York City on Tuesday, May 27, with testimony from his former assistant Capricorn Clark, who worked for him from 2004 to 2012. Diddy, 55, is on trial for sex trafficking, transportation to engage in prostitution and racketeering conspiracy. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges and denied all of the allegations against him. Clark testified on Tuesday that she began her career with Diddy as his personal assistant before coming back to work as his then-girlfriend Cassie's creative director from 2016 to 2018. She claimed that her former boss threatened to kill her while she worked for him — and threatened to kill Kid Cudi, who started dating Cassie, 38, while she was on a break from Diddy. Clark alleged that 'a very upset' Diddy showed up at her door in December 2011 with a gun in his hand, wearing pants that were split open at the crotch. 'Why didn't you tell me?' Clark recalled Diddy asking, referring to the fact that Cudi, 41, had been dating Cassie. Cassie's Ex-Boyfriend Kid Cudi Claims Diddy Broke Into His House in 2011: 'I Wanted to Fight Him' Diddy then allegedly told Clark to get dressed and said, 'We're gonna go kill this n****.' Clark told the jury that she'd 'never seen anything like this before,' adding that Diddy had never come to her house before and she'd never seen him with a weapon. 'The way he was acting, I just felt like anything could happen,' she noted. Clark then rode with Diddy and a security staffer to Cudi's home in the Hollywood Hills. She said she stayed in the car while Diddy and the security guard allegedly broke into the residence, although Cudi was not there at the time. While in the car, she called Cassie (who was with Cudi) to tell her what was happening and said Diddy had brought her to the house 'to kill him.' After getting Clark's call, Cudi went to the house and a brief car chase ensued. Clark testified that Diddy then asked her to call Cassie and to tell her that 'he has me and that he wasn't going to let me go until he comes to get her.' Diddy allegedly then told Clark to convince Cudi and Cassie not to call the police because if they did he would 'kill all y'all motherf***ers.' Cassie Recalls Diddy's Alleged Threat to Blow Up Then-Boyfriend Kid Cudi's Car: 'He Was Going to Hurt' Us Cudi testified last week that Diddy allegedly broke into his home in December 2011 after discovering that Cassie was dating him. The following month, Diddy allegedly blew up Cudi's Porsche with a Molotov cocktail. Over the Memorial Day weekend, Diddy's legal team asked Judge Arun Subramanian to strike a portion of Cudi's testimony, claiming that the 'Day 'n' Nite' rapper's allegations about the 2012 car explosion were 'mere speculation' and posed 'significant dangers of unfair prejudice.' Diddy's team said a 'witness generally cannot testify that in his opinion, a declarant was lying when making a statement,' referring to Cudi's claims on the stand last week that Diddy 'was lying' when he denied involvement in the explosion of his Porsche vehicle during a meeting in Los Angeles. In addition to telling her own side of the Cudi story, Clark testified on Tuesday that Diddy threatened her early in her employment because she hadn't disclosed that she previously worked for his rival Suge Knight. Clark alleged that in 2004 Diddy and a bodyguard known as Uncle Paulie brought her to Central Park, where Diddy told her 'if anything happened [with Suge] he would have to kill me.' Diddy Asks Judge to Strike Kid Cudi Car Explosion Claims From the Record Amid Sex Trafficking Trial On another occasion, Clark said she was accused of stealing jewelry from Jacob Arabo, known as Jacob the Jeweler. She alleged that Uncle Paulie searched her house and claimed she was given a lie detector test by another man who told her if she failed that she would be thrown into the East River. 'I was petrified,' she recalled. Clark claimed that she underwent five days of lie detector tests related to the alleged theft. After those five days, she was told to return to work, where Diddy allegedly never mentioned the incident or the status of the jewelry. When asked why she didn't quit at that point, she said she felt that leaving would make it look like she was guilty of something she didn't do. Security Guard Diddy Paid $100K For Cassie Assault Video Testifies As Screaming Woman Forcibly Removed From Court
Source: Variety / Getty Diddy's sex trafficking and racketeering trial has largely been supported by victim testimonies, text messages and photos like the ones of Kid Cudi's burned Porsche, but the most damning has been the video. The video of Diddy beating and dragging his then girlfriend, Cassie, through the hallways of a California hotel made its way through the court of public opinion, and now it's the subject of the latest person to testify against him. Eddie Garcia, who worked at the InterContinental in Los Angeles in March 2016, took the stand to tell the story of how much Diddy never wanted the tape to see the light of day. According to NBC News , he remembers clocking in to work that day, brought up to speed about the assault, but 'was told Ms. Ventura did not request the presence of police or medical attention.' In the days after the assault, Diddy's team began to understand the video's potential damage, as former chief of staff, Kristina Khorram, repeatedly called the hotel to get the footage, and eventually Diddy himself, who tried to justify his actions. 'He was talking really fast, a lot of stuttering,' Garcia remembers Diddy saying, adding that he was ' just saying he had a little too much to drink.' Garcia said Diddy also told him, 'With women, one thing leads to another, and if this got out, it would ruin him.' Garcia says that Diddy was willing to pay for the sole copy of the footage, and his boss agreed to a $50,000 fee. 'He referred to me as 'Eddy, my angel,'' Garcia said. The deal came together as he got on a FaceTime call with Diddy and Ventura, who Diddy told to say she also wanted the video to disappear. The security guard was then told to sign a $1 million penalty NDA, —which was later presented in court— and Diddy walked into a room with a money counter and $100,000 in a brown paper bag. Combs said he doubled the original amount so he could split it with the other security guards who were aware of the situation. Combs warned him not to make any large purchases so as not to draw attention to himself, so he spent the money on a used car. He even contacted Garcia weeks later to ask him if there had been any rumblings about the video, telling him, 'Happy Easter. You are my angel. God is good. God put you in my life for a reason.' Prior to Garcia's account of Diddy paying him off, there was a disruption in the courtroom when a woman in the gallery, who claimed to be a transit employee, began acting up. 'Everyone is laughing at Diddy! It's not right what they're doing to him!' she screamed as U.S. District Court Judge Arun Subramanian instructed her to be removed.
