First Lady Liza inspects ongoing renovations at PICC for ASEAN 2026
First Lady Louise ''Liza'' Araneta-Marcos inspected the ongoing renovations and preparations at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) for the ASEAN 2026.
''This iconic space has been a witness to many pivotal chapters in our history -- and now, it's being primed to host the world once more,'' Liza said in a social media post.
''My heartfelt thanks to the efficient PICC team and to our ASEAN National Organizing Committee for their dedication in making this landmark a venue that reflects not just our hospitality, but our strength, our progress and our vision for the region,'' she added.
The Philippines will host the ASEAN Summit and Related Summits next year.
To recall, the Office of the President's budget for fiscal year 2025 was increased as it asked for supplemental funds for the Philippines' hosting of the ASEAN Summit and its related meetings.
The ASEAN aims to accelerate economic growth, social progress and cultural development in the region through joint endeavors in the spirit of equality and partnership that will strengthen the foundation for a prosperous and peaceful community of Southeast Asian nations.
The bloc also aims to promote regional peace and stability through abiding respect for justice and the rule of law in the relationship among countries of the region and adherence to the principles of the United Nations charter. — Anna Felicia Bajo/RSJ, GMA Integrated News

Marcos touts fast growth, low inflation in June 12 toast
"We are confident that we will achieve the six percent GDP growth target in the coming quarters, driven by a steady fiscal consolidation, easing inflation, and progress in trade negotiations with key partners, amongst other initiatives," Marcos said. President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. on Thursday raised a toast to the Philippines' growth of 5.6% in the first quarter, the 1.3% inflation in May, and other gains that had him calling the country "an economic standout" in the region. At the annual Independence Day Vin d'Honneur in Malacañang, Marcos also reported to the diplomatic corps the Philippines' exit from the Financial Action Task Force's grey list of countries under increased monitoring for money laundering and terrorism finance, and the enactment of laws expected to promote further growth. "I am pleased to note that the Philippine economy grew 5.4 percent in the first quarter of 2025 and is among the fastest in the ASEAN region despite rising global volatilities. This includes growth for major economic sectors of agriculture, forestry, fishing, industry, and services," Marcos said. "We are confident that we will achieve the six percent GDP growth target in the coming quarters, driven by a steady fiscal consolidation, easing inflation, and progress in trade negotiations with key partners, amongst other initiatives," he added. "The forecast is supported by the IMF World Economic Outlook in April of 2025, which similarly painted a rosy projection for the Philippines to be the fastest-growing economy among ASEAN five countries in 2025," Marcos said. As regards the inflation rate, Marcos said that it was the lowest since November 2019. "It's a very encouraging development, not only as it creates a stable and predictable economic environment for businesses, but also because it increases the purchasing power of individuals and households, especially lower-income families," Marcos said. Marcos thanked the diplomats for their countries' help and trust that resulted in the Philippines being taken off the FATF grey list. "Adding to investors' confidence in the country is the exit of the Philippines from the Financial Action Task Force's greylist a few months ago. This we would not have achieved without the help and trust of your governments. So once again, thank you very much," Marcos said. Marcos mentioned as the government's legislative and policy reforms aimed at improving the investment climate in both local and foreign investments. These include: Republic Act No. 12214 of the Capital Markets Efficiency Promotion Act, "which will encourage ordinary Filipinos to invest in the Philippines' capital markets and promote inclusive growth"; Corporate Recovery and Tax Incentives of Enterprises, which addresses concerns of value-added tax exemptions and gives investors the flexibility to enjoy income tax holidays, "designed to draw in more investors"; and joint memorandum circular on strengthening the coordination and mechanism between and among investment facilitation network members integration of the provisions of Executive Order No. 18, Series 2023, "to seriously end bureaucratic red tape, improve the ease of doing business, and make the Philippines a more attractive destination for investors." Marcos campaigned anew for the country's bid for a non-permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council for 2027 to 2028. 'We just finished an election, and I cannot stop campaigning. Our candidature is anchored in our country's legacy in multilateralism as evidenced by our history of forging cooperation and seeking peace. We earnestly hope to receive the support of your respective governments in that field,' Marcos said. The Philippines has been a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council during the following years: 1957, 1963, 1980 to 1981, and 2004 to 2005. "On this note, at this point, I would like to invite everyone to join me in a toast to everyone's very good health and long life," Marcos said.

Senate OKs priority bills before adjourning sine die
Several legislative priorities of the Marcos administration were ratified by the Senate before the 19th Congress adjourned sine die on Wednesday night. These included the bicameral conference committee reports on the Enhanced Fiscal Regime for Large-Scale Metallic Mining Act and the Accelerated and Reformed Right-of-Way (ARROW) Act, which were both listed as 'top priority' measures of the Legislative-Executive Development Council (LEDAC). The ratified bicam report on the Enhanced Fiscal Regime for Large-Scale Metallic Mining Act came from Senate Bill No. 2826 and House Bill No. 8937. According to Senator JV Ejercito, the reconciled version allows a five percent royalty based on gross output on mines operating within mineral reservation and a 5-tier royalty rate ranging from one percent to five percent based on margin from metallic mining operations for those outside mineral reservations. With the reforms in large-scale mining, the senator believes the government would benefit from an additional P6 billion worth of revenues. Senator Risa Hontiveros, however, opposed the measure, saying that it rejected amendments on increasing royalties for indigenous communities affected by mining, and imposing an export tax to fund the National Industrialization Program. Meanwhile, the ARROW Act was ratified by the upper chamber through the bicam report on the disagreeing provisions of Senate Bill No. 2821 and House Bill No. 6571. Senator Mark Villar, sponsor of the bill in the Senate, said that the measure is important in addressing the right-of-way issues that delay government infrastructure projects. 'Many projects have failed to meet their target completion dates due to unresolved right-of-way delays. Given these challenges, we welcome the amendment of the existing right-of-way law. The ARROW Act introduces key reforms to make the law more responsive to the evolving infrastructure landscape,' Villar said. The Senate also ratified the bicam report seeking to extend the term of barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) officials to four years. The report also postpones the 2025 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections from December 2025 to the first Monday of November 2026 Also ratified by the Senate on Wednesday night were bicam reports on the following: Judiciary Fiscal Autonomy Act (Senate Bill No. 2982 and House Bill No. 11358); An Act amending Sections 134 and 168 of Republic Act No. 8424, otherwise known as the National Internal Revenue Code of 1997, as amended (Senate Committee Report No. 581 and House Bill No. 10535); Philippine Nuclear Energy Safety Act (Senate Bill No. 2899 and House Bill No. 9293); and Career Progression System for Public School Teachers and School Leaders Act (Senate Bill No. 3000 and House Bill No. 10270) — BM, GMA Integrated News

Marcos: Strive for excellence to preserve PH freedom, rights
President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr. on Thursday underscored the need to strive for excellence to preserve the country's freedom. In commemorating the 127th Independence Day, Marcos said 'the freedom our forebears fought for has inspired generations to offer themselves to causes that would advance the welfare of society and humanity.' 'This precious gift has also encouraged countless individuals to dedicate their diligence and devotion to their respective fields for the glory of our great nation,' Marcos said in his message. 'That is why we must value our heritage by striving for excellence in preserving our rights and freedoms ensuring that they are used solely for the improvement and protection of our citizenry,' he added. He said the journey in reaching that freedom was long, arduous, and costly, as it required the sacrifice of selfless individuals for over a century. 'Because of their heroism, we now enjoy the rights and privileges reserved for those who have a country they can call their own,' Marcos said. He urged the public to continue to bear the vigor of the ancestors, stressing the need to defend the nation against those who seek to diminish the strength of the people. Marcos also urged them to honor the priceless freedom by building a country worthy of the sacrifices made by our heroes. 'May you endeavor to enhance your abilities and character to give more to our nation.
