'I listen to people's problems and guide bodies to solve them,' says Sheikh Sultan

His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member Ruler of Sharjah, said, "People have needs, and I listen to the issues raised in the programme. I then communicate with government departments to resolve them, and based on this, guidance is provided." Sheikh Sultan made the statement on Direct Line. Recently, Sheikh Sultan directed the Sharjah Health Authority to continue the treatment of the father of 'Umm Mohammed,' a follower of the 'Direct Line' programme broadcast by the Sharjah Broadcasting Authority, at Burjeel Hospital in Abu Dhabi, with Sheikh Sultan's office covering the treatment costs, regardless of insurance coverage. Dr Abdul Aziz Al Muhairi, Chairman of the Sharjah Health Authority, stated during the programme hosted by Mohammed Al Raeesi that Sheikh Sultan listened to the message sent by 'Umm Mohammed,' in which she appealed for her father's continued treatment at the hospital, where he has been for a year and five months. She noted that the insurance company had stopped covering the treatment expenses. D. Al Muhairi added Sheikh Sultan directed the authority to take the necessary steps to ensure the father's continued treatment at Burjeel Hospital or transfer him to the University Hospital in Sharjah if the family prefers. Accordingly, Burjeel Hospital was notified that the office of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah will cover the treatment costs for the case. Sheikh Sultan has approved the allocation of plots of land to citizens in the Al Haray area of Khorfakkan. This includes 180 residential plots, 450 industrial plots and 60 commercial plots. Work is underway to level the plots so they can be handed over to eligible beneficiaries within two months. A park will also be established in the area. This was announced by Ayman Rashid Al Naqbi, Director of the Department of Planning and Survey-Khorfakkan Branch, during a conversation with the Direct Line programme. Last week, Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, announced a miracle road above the peaks of mountains in Khorfakkan. 'We will build a road above the peaks and foothills of mountains, reaching Khorfakkan. The road will be a wonder like no other, and driving on it will be a true pleasure. Surrounded by trees, plants, waterways and beautiful homes, the road will ascend from the Ghazir Tunnel to reach the highest mountain peak in Khorfakkan, at an altitude of 1,100 metres above sea level,' Sheikh Sultan said in exclusive statements to the Direct Line programme. The Ruler of Sharjah also approved a new batch of housing support beneficiaries in the emirate of Sharjah, allocated for urgent cases, with a budget of Dhs335 million. A total of 431 families will benefit, including 133 families currently living in rented accommodation, 201 families residing in overcrowded homes with relatives, 61 families living in inherited houses, and 36 families in old and structurally unfit homes. All these applications fall under the grant category, and beneficiaries will receive ready-built government housing. The approval was announced by Khalid bin Butti Al Muhairi, Chairman of the Sharjah Department of Housing, during a phone-in segment on the 'Direct Line' programme, broadcast on Sharjah Broadcasting Authority.

Trailblazing Dubai Police officer shares pride after being named first female brigadier

A long-serving Dubai Police officer has become the first woman to achieve the rank of brigadier in the 69-year history of Dubai Police. Colonel Samira Abdullah Al Ali's appointment came under a round of promotions for senior officers, non-commissioned officers and personnel under the directive of Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. Brigadier Al Ali was given the promotion after 31 years of service to Dubai Police. She currently heads the insurance department at Dubai Police and has played a pivotal role in developing world-class insurance practices that support the organisation's assets and operations. 'This promotion is a source of pride for every woman in Dubai Police and a testament to the organisation's dedication to granting women equal opportunities to lead and serve their country,' she said. 'This rank carries great responsibility. I will do everything in my power to live up to the confidence placed in me and continue contributing meaningfully to our beloved nation and the institution I'm proud to be part of.' Brigadier Al Ali joined Dubai Police in October 1994, following her graduation from the UAE University in 1991 with a bachelor's degree in insurance. After an initial spell working in the private insurance industry, she enrolled in a women's preparatory course at the Dubai Police Academy after responding to a newspaper recruitment advert. Her role was alongside two other workers, but the office quickly evolved to become a specialised department with three major sections covering all insurance matters relating to Dubai Police assets. Her growing leadership talents led her to become the first woman to work at the General Department of Transport and Rescue, and eventually take up a senior position in a department that had previously only employed men. Pioneering role The department she leads has since gone on to develop several innovations, including adding unmanned drones to insurance coverage, work injury insurance for volunteers and medical malpractice insurance for staff at Dubai Police Health Centre. In 2022, Brigadier Al Ali, who has a son, was named Outstanding Female Employee (2022) in the Emirates Women Award by Dubai Quality Group. 'No other police agency in the UAE has a dedicated Insurance Department like ours,' she said. 'We handle all types of insurance operations, constantly updating and monitoring policies to meet evolving needs. 'Discipline and commitment, which I learnt at Dubai Police, helped me balance my professional and personal life. 'I always remind my 22-member team, including three women, to believe in yourselves and trust in God. With faith and effort, everything is possible.'

Dubai scientists advance precision medicine with Arab pangenome study

In a groundbreaking development for healthcare and genetic research, scientists at Dubai's Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU) have published the first-ever Arab Pangenome Reference—a major leap forward in precision medicine for the region. The research, featured in the prestigious journal Nature Communications, provides a vital foundation for personalised healthcare tailored to Arab populations. Using advanced DNA sequencing from 53 individuals of diverse Arab heritage living in the UAE, researchers identified over 110 million new DNA base pairs, nearly nine million small genetic differences, and more than 235,000 larger structural variations unique to Arabs—many of which had never been documented before. The study supports the UAE's National Genome Strategy, launched in 2023 to push the frontiers of personalised and preventive medicine. One notable finding was a duplicated gene called TAF11L5, found in Arab individuals but absent in global genetic databases. Scientists believe this could offer new insights into disease risk and treatment response. Researchers say the Arab Pangenome will help close long-standing gaps in global genomic data and enable the development of more accurate diagnostic tools and therapies for the region. The project also developed 'PanScan', a bioinformatics tool to support more complex analysis of human pangenomes. Although not the central focus of the study, PanScan enables researchers to detect gene duplications, novel DNA changes, and complex DNA structures. Now publicly available on GitHub, a common resource used by scientists worldwide, the tool was created to support the Arab Pangenome Reference and similar efforts globally. Scientists at the Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences, the learning and discovery arm of Dubai Health, have published the first Arab Pangenome Reference, marking a major milestone in both regional and global genomic research.
