India Today04-07-2025
The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) on Friday cleared 10 proposals to acquire military hardware worth Rs 1.05 lakh crore through indigenous sourcing, in a major boost to India after Operation Sindoor. The DAC, chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, gave Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) for the procurement of Armoured Recovery Vehicles, Electronic Warfare System, Integrated Common Inventory Management System for the tri-services and surface-to-air missiles. advertisementThis was the first meeting of the crucial body after the hostilities with Pakistan, where India used multiple equipment in its military arsenal to destroy nine terror camps and target military bases.
"These procurements will provide higher mobility, effective air defence, better supply chain management and augment the operational preparedness of the armed forces," a Defence Ministry statement said. The acquisition of indigenous Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air Missile (QRSAM) systems will help strengthen India's air defence along the Pakistan border. The purchase plans also include moored mines, Mine Countermeasure Vessels, Super Rapid Gun Mount and Submersible Autonomous Vessels. These will enable mitigation of potential risks posed to naval and merchant vessels.WEAPONS USED IN OPERATION SINDOORThe development comes as the Defence Ministry eyes speedy modernisation of the armed forces while boosting self-reliance in the sector.Operation Sindoor saw the extensive use of India's indigenous military hardware, including the Akash Missile System, Akashteer air defence system, and various other equipment designed and developed by DRDO.In fact, the Chinese-built HQ-9 air defence system used by Pakistan failed to effectively intercept the Akash short-range surface-to-air missiles launched by India. India also used the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile to inflict damage to terror bases and military installations deep inside Pakistan.- EndsMust Watch

Key Panel Accepts Centre's Proposal To Move To 2 GST Slabs, Down From 4

A key meeting of the Group of Ministers (GoM) on GST rate rationalisation on Thursday ended with state finance minister accepting the Centre's plan to reduce the number of tax slabs. The proposal, placed before the six-member GoM led by Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary, aims to replace the current four rates of 5, 12, 18 and 28 per cent with just two main slabs. Under the new structure, 'merit' goods and services will attract 5 per cent GST, while most other items (standard) will come under an 18 per cent standard rate. A higher 40 per cent levy will remain on a small set of so-called sin goods. Examples include alcohol, tobacco, drugs, gambling, soft drinks, fast food, coffee, sugar, and even pornography. A sin tax is a special tax that the government puts on such goods. The purpose is to discourage people from using them and to reduce the harm they can cause. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, addressing the two-day GoM meeting earlier, had said that a simplified system would benefit the common man, farmers, the middle class and small businesses, while also making GST more transparent and growth-oriented. As part of the changes, almost all items currently in the 12 per cent category will move to the 5 per cent slab. Similarly, most products taxed at 28 per cent will shift to the 18 per cent bracket, which the Centre believes will improve compliance and reduce complexity. The GoM also reviewed the Centre's suggestion to exempt GST on individual health and life insurance premiums. While most states supported the idea, they flagged the need for strict oversight to make sure insurance companies actually pass on the benefit to customers. The exemption is estimated to cost about Rs 9,700 crore in annual revenue. The final decision on the recommendations will be taken by the GST Council in its next meeting slated for September.

Rajya Sabha adjourned sine die amid standoff over Bihar SIR; Online Gaming Regulation Bill passed

Rajya Sabha- File image New Delhi: In a session marked by loud protests and persistent sloganeering, the Rajya Sabha adjourned sine die on Thursday after the passage of 'The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025' introduced by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. The Bill, which had already cleared the Lok Sabha, was passed by voice vote despite a noisy standoff over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists in Bihar. The legislation seeks to establish a national framework for regulating the online gaming sector, including e-sports, educational games, and social gaming. It also imposes a strict ban on online money games involving betting or gambling, especially those operating across state borders or from foreign jurisdictions. The Bill proposes the creation of a central authority to oversee policy coordination, strategic development, and regulatory enforcement in the sector. Speaking in support of the Bill, Minister Vaishnaw emphasised the government's decision to prioritise the welfare of the middle class and youth over potential revenue gains. Add as a Preferred Source 'There are social evils in every era,' he said, 'but under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Modi, we have chosen to act decisively.' He cited alarming figures, noting that nearly 45 crore people are affected by online money gaming, with estimated financial losses exceeding Rs 30,000 crore. The World Health Organisation has classified online money gaming addiction as a psychological disorder, and the minister warned that the issue has escalated into a public health crisis, with families losing breadwinners and key members to addiction. The minister also raised concerns about the misuse of online gambling platforms for terror funding and drug trafficking, calling them 'safe havens' for illicit activities. 'This problem has grown like the drug menace,' he said, warning that powerful interests may attempt to challenge the Bill in court or sway public opinion through social media. 'But our Prime Minister stands firmly with the youth and middle class,' he added. Despite the Bill's significance, the session was repeatedly disrupted by Opposition members demanding a discussion on the voter list revision in Bihar. Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge attempted to speak but was denied by the Deputy Chairman. Other members, including John Brittas and Dr R. Sivadasan, tried to raise amendments but were denied as they raised the issue of SIR; their voice drowned out by the commotion. BJP MP Kiren Rijiju criticised the Opposition for not engaging with the Bill's content, questioning their commitment to public welfare. Following the passage of the Online Gaming Regulation Bill, Deputy Chairman Harivansh adjourned the Rajya Sabha for ten minutes, bringing a brief pause to a session already marred by repeated disruptions. When the House reconvened, he addressed the members with a candid reflection on the productivity and conduct of the 268th session. He noted that despite the Chair's persistent efforts to maintain decorum, the session was plagued by disorder and resulted in a significant loss of valuable parliamentary time. The House functioned for only 41 hours and 15 minutes, yielding a disappointing productivity rate of just 38.88 per cent — an outcome he described as a matter warranting serious introspection. The Deputy Chairman highlighted that members had the opportunity to raise 255 starred questions, submit 285 Zero Hour notices, and make 285 Special Mentions. However, only 14 questions were actually answered, with just seven Zero Hour submissions and 61 Special Mentions taken up during proceedings. Despite the disruptions, the House managed to pass or return 14 government Bills, including the one regulating online gaming. It also held a discussion on Operation Sindoor, launched in response to the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, and bid farewell to six retiring members. In light of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar's resignation on July 21, Deputy Chairman Harivansh also acknowledged the constitutional responsibility now resting on his shoulders. His remarks underscored the gravity of the moment, both in terms of legislative accountability and the constitutional transition underway. Then he adjourned the House sine die.
