Stalin to lead ‘Semmozhi Day' celebrations on Karunanidhi's birth anniversary
Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin is set to lead a series of commemorative events on June 3, marking the birth anniversary of former Chief Minister and DMK patriarch M. Karunanidhi.
The state government has officially designated the day as 'Semmozhi Day' to honour Karunanidhi's lifelong contributions to the Tamil language and literature.
According to an official release, Stalin will begin the day by paying floral tributes to Karunanidhi's statue located at the Omandurar Government Estate campus on Anna Salai. The tribute ceremony is scheduled for 9:30 a.m.
The main event of the day will be held at Kalaivanar Arangam in Chennai, where a grand function has been organised by the Central Institute of Classical Tamil (CICT).
As part of the celebration, Chief Minister Stalin will release a new set of Tamil scholarly books published by the institute.
In line with the government's commitment to promoting the Tamil language and academic excellence, Stalin will also distribute certificates to scholars who have completed their doctoral studies in classical Tamil.
This is seen as part of a broader push to encourage higher education and research in Tamil linguistics and heritage.
Further underscoring the state's focus on preserving Tamil culture and recognising contributions to the language, the Chief Minister will hand over enhanced financial assistance to senior Tamil scholars.
This aid is aimed at supporting elderly language experts who have spent their lives promoting and enriching Tamil literature.
Additionally, prizes will be awarded to school and college students who emerged victorious in various Tamil-related competitions conducted in connection with 'Semmozhi Day'. These competitions were designed to increase student engagement with the language and to inspire a deeper appreciation for Tamil classical and modern literature.
The state government's decision to observe June 3 as 'Semmozhi Day' annually reflects Karunanidhi's enduring legacy as a scholar, writer, and passionate advocate for Tamil.
Officials stated that the day would continue to be marked with programs that promote Tamil language, literature, and culture across the state.
With these initiatives, the government aims to keep alive the ideals that Karunanidhi stood for and to inspire future generations to take pride in their linguistic heritage.

A spokesperson of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said this on Thursday, a day after Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin expressed concern over the Census-linked delimitation exercise. 'The Honourable Home Minister has made it clear on several occasions that in the delimitation exercise, concerns of southern states will be taken care of and discussed with all concerned at appropriate time," the spokesperson said. The Census was supposed to be conducted in 2021 and all the preparations for the exercise were completed but it was postponed due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. The spokesperson said the aftershock of COVID-19 continued for quite some time and it caused disruptions in all sectors, including education. Around 30 lakh enumerators are required for conducting the Census. Enumerators, who are primary school teachers, are key persons for conducting the exercise. Conducting the Census in the aftermath of COVID-19 'could have disrupted primary education immensely". 'Countries which conducted Census immediately after COVID-19 faced issues on quality and coverage of Census data," the spokesperson said. The government has decided to commence the process of the Census forthwith and it will complete on March 1, 2027, the reference date for the Census. The spokesperson also said that budget has never been a constraint for conducting the Census as allocation of funds is always ensured by the government. India's 16th Census with caste enumeration will be carried out in 2027 with the reference date of October 1, 2026, in snow-bound areas like Ladakh and of March 1, 2027, in the rest of the country. It has been decided to conduct the Population Census-2027 in two phases, along with the enumeration of castes, the MHA announced on Wednesday. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Stalin wrote on X that the Indian Constitution mandates that delimitation must follow the first Census after 2026 and the BJP has now 'delayed" the Census to 2027, 'making their plan clear to reduce" Tamil Nadu's parliamentary representation. 'I had warned about this. It is now unfolding. the BJP, Palaniswami is not just silent but complicit in this betrayal. It's now clear that he has surrendered to Delhi's domination. 'The people of Tamil Nadu are united as one in their demand for a Fair Delimitation. We need clear answers from the Union Government," Stalin said. Diplomacy is about ‘incrementalism', says Congress leader Manish Tewari
In the face of questions raised by the Congress party on the 'political value' of the people that the multi-party delegations had met, and what they had 'actually accomplished' on the Centre's international diplomatic outreach after the recent India-Pakistan conflict, delegates said diplomacy was about 'incrementalism', and was not a '20-20 cricket match'. Ahead of External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar's meetings with two delegations, Congress general secretary (communication) Jairam Ramesh had said on Wednesday (June 4, 2025) in a post on X that there needed to be an 'honest assessment of what was actually accomplished' and not what was 'spin doctored'. Mr. Jaishankar on Thursday (June 5, 2025) met the delegation headed by senior Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) leader K. Kanimozhi that visited Russia, Latvia, Slovenia, Greece, and Spain, and the delegation headed by senior Janata Dal-United (JD-U) leader Sanjay K. Jha that visited Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Indonesia, and Malaysia. 'There are reliable reports that the welcome in some countries was very lukewarm — to put it mildly — and that the political value of the people the MPs met was below par. Videos of the MPs engaging in silly fun and frolic while on a serious national mission have also been surfacing,' Mr. Ramesh said. 'We live in a contested political space. Other delegates also contested the Congress's claim. JD(U) leader Sanjay K. Jha said that his delegation had met the Japanese Foreign Minister, had breakfast with Ambassadors to Japan from various countries, and in Jakarta, met with ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) Ambassadors. 'To criticise an all-party delegation, which spoke in one voice on such an important issue, is a new low for the Congress,' Mr. Jha said. Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) MP John Brittas, who was part of Mr. Jha's delegation, said it had clarified India's viewpoint. 'We didn't go to play a 20-20 cricket match, for there to be winners or losers. Each person is entitled to their own opinion. Our delegation has laid down the foundation, clarifying India's viewpoint, and also underlined the dangers of Pakistan-sponsored terrorism. It is for the government now to build over it,' Mr. Brittas said. The president of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), Asaduddin Owaisi, who was part of a delegation led by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Baijayant Panda to Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Algeria, said that it was 'subjective criticism' to claim that the delegation did not meet people of 'political value'. 'Out of the four countries we visited, one (Algeria) is currently a non-permanent member of the UNSC (United Nations Security Council), and another (Bahrain) will get a seat next year. They exert influence on Pakistan and will be crucial in India's efforts to put Pakistan on the FATF (Financial Action Task Force) grey list,' Mr. Owaisi said, adding that the delegation met top decision-making bodies in all the four countries, and also members of think tanks.
