Mohit Suri On The Moment He Decided To Become A Director: 'Bought DDLJ Tickets In Black…'

News18a day ago
Mohit Suri says he was inspired by Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge to become a director.
Saiyaara director Mohit Suri still remembers the moment he decided he had to be a director. It was while watching Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge at Mumbai's Gaiety Galaxy — so much so that he saw it twice, even buying a ticket in black the second time. The Yash Raj Films classic, directed by Aditya Chopra, left a mark that stayed with him.
Now, years later, Mohit has come full circle with Saiyaara under the YRF banner — a film that's taken his career to a new high, even beyond the success of his earlier hits. Speaking at the CNN-News18 Townhall, Mumbai edition, Mohit Suri looked back at the moment. 'My aim in life over here is to work with some really great people, and I'm so happy I'm getting to do that. There is the money — it's superb. But, just hanging out with people. Like, I was in the 8th grade seeing Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge in the theatre, in Gaiety Galaxy. And I called my dad to see it again, and I bought a ticket in black. I saw that film and said, 'I want to be a director'. And imagine working for him [Aditya Chopra] today. That was a big moment for me. It was a fanboy moment, and I'm really grateful for that."
About Saiyaara starring Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda
Powered by strong word-of-mouth and immense public support, Saiyaara has outperformed expectations despite facing stiff competition from Anupam Kher's Tanvi: The Great, Sonakshi Sinha's Nikita Roy, Mahavatar Narsimha, Ajay Devgn's Son of Sardaar 2, and Triptii Dimri–Sidhant Chaturvedi's Dhadak 2. Its gripping storyline, heartfelt emotions, and soul-stirring music have kept audiences hooked.
The romantic drama follows Ahaan, a daring and struggling musician, and Aneet, a fiercely devoted writer, as their love is tested by life's trials in classic Mohit Suri style. The film explores themes of grief, sacrifice, and eternal love. Written by Rohan Shankar and Sankalp Sadanah, Saiyaara also features standout performances from Geeta Agrawal Sharma, Sid Makkar, Shaad Randhawa, Rajesh Kumar, and Varun Badola, marking the first collaboration between Mohit Suri and legendary production house Yash Raj Films.

Abhishek Bachchan Has THIS Wish As Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan's Sholay Marks 50 Years

Sholay revolved around two ex-convicts, Jai and Veeru, who are hired by Thakur Baldev Singh, a retired policeman, to help nab a notorious dacoit named Gabbar Singh. As 'Sholay', the biggest blockbuster of Indian cinema, celebrates its Golden Jubilee, Abhishek Bachchan shared with IANS that he wishes to watch the iconic film on a 70 mm screen at the iconic Minerva theatre. The film features his father Amitabh Bachchan and mother Jaya Bachchan in the lead. When asked during an interview, 'Sholay will soon be completing 50 years. Have there been any conversations at the family dining table about the film? If so, which story or memory from Sholay tends to come up most often?" Abhishek replied 'Not really spoken about it but have discussed it with friends. My biggest tragedy is that I have never seen Sholay on 70 mm." He continued, 'I keep telling my friend Rohan (Rohan Sippy)—we've done three films together, and our fathers made 'Sholay' together—Please remaster it and we will go and watch it in Minerva. I really hope they re-release it so that we can experience it again in all its glory." Adding to it, he informed, 'Sholay was the first film to release an audio cassette featuring just its dialogues. The lines became so iconic that they put out a separate audio release for them." 'Sholay', the most iconic film of Hindi cinema, was released on August 15, 1975. Although it initially received a lukewarm response at the box office, it gradually gained momentum through word of mouth. The film is considered as one of the greatest movies in Hindi cinema for its grandeur, performances, technical brilliance, action, music and direction. It was top of the British Film Institute's 2002 poll of 'Top 10 Indian Films" of all time. The film was written by the legendary screenwriting duo Salim-Javed, and went on to become one of longest running films of Indian cinema. Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. After Saiyaara success, old video of Ahaan Panday rapping with pet MC Peach wins hearts online

After his heartfelt performance in Saiyaara, Ahaan Panday is winning hearts online again—this time with his dog. An old video of the actor rapping with his pet, named 'MC Peach,' has gone viral on social media. Fans can't get enough of the cute moment and are praising Ahaan's fun-loving personality. Recently, he was also seen happily clicking selfies and chatting with fans. Ever since his debut film Saiyaara hit the big screen, Ahaan has been showered with love. The romantic drama has broken box office records and has even earned praise from many celebrities. Mohit Suri says Saiyaara was always meant to feature fresh faces Director Mohit Suri, who helmed Saiyaara, told News18 in an interview that the film was always meant to feature fresh faces. He shared that Yash Raj Films head Aditya Chopra told him the film wouldn't work with established stars. Initially, Mohit considered suggesting big names for the lead roles but later stuck to his gut and cast newcomers Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda . 'I really put a lot of my voice into the film. In this atmosphere where everyone was blowing up cars, I was making this love story with new people. I put a lot of myself into writing the film, along with my assistant. I sent the script to YRF during the December holiday weekend, and I chickened out. I thought, let me give him some solution—in the sense of suggesting some actors and known names who would back me and make this film. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Even Beautiful Women Have Their 'Oops' Moments Read More Undo I so badly wanted to make this film,' Mohit said. Varun Badola disagrees In a YouTube interview with Nayandeep Rakshit, actor Varun Badola dismissed the notion that Saiyaara proved 'we don't need stars anymore.' He argued that swapping lead actors between films would not yield the same success, explaining that if Ahaan Panday were placed in Jawan, the film would flop, and if Shah Rukh Khan were cast in Saiyaara, it would also fail. According to him, Shah Rukh would overshadow the story, while Ahaan would lack the persona needed to lead a big commercial film like Jawan. Badola also commented on the social media hype around Saiyaara, noting that the promotions seemed over the top. He pointed out how some Instagram posts showed people breaking bangles, beating their chests, or even watching the film while on IV drips—gestures he believed were orchestrated for content. He added, with some humor, that thankfully no one went so far as to break their legs and crawl to the theatre. About the film Saiyaara is a Mohit Suri-style love story about Ahaan, a passionate musician, and Aneet, a dedicated writer. Their relationship is tested by loss, sacrifice, and life's challenges. Written by Rohan Shankar and Sankalp Sadanah, the movie also stars Geeta Agrawal Sharma, Sid Makkar, Shaad Randhawa, Rajesh Kumar, and Varun Badola. This marks the first-ever collaboration between Mohit Suri and Yash Raj Films. "Get the latest news updates on Times of India, including reviews of the movie Coolie and War 2 ."

Margot Robbie To NOT Return As Harley Quinn? Superman Director James Gunn's BIG Reveal

James Gunn teases Margot Robbie's return as Harley Quinn amidst DC overhaul. Gunn hints at plans for Idris Elba's Bloodsport. James Gunn is keeping fans guessing when it comes to Margot Robbie's return as Harley Quinn. The Barbie star has become synonymous with the chaotic charm of Harley Quinn, having portrayed the anti-heroine in three major DC films: 2016's Suicide Squad, 2020's Birds of Prey, and 2021's The Suicide Squad. But as the DC Universe undergoes a major overhaul under Gunn's leadership, Robbie's future in the franchise remains uncertain. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Gunn – who now serves as CEO and Co-Chairman of DC Studios – was asked directly whether Robbie would reprise her role. He teased: 'That will be revealed down the line." While Gunn remained tight-lipped about Harley, he did hint at plans for another Suicide Squad alum: Idris Elba's Bloodsport, adding: 'I definitely am always looking for a place to put Bloodsport and figuring that out. So we'll see what happens." Robbie, meanwhile, has kept busy outside the superhero realm, earning critical acclaim and box office success with Barbie, which became a cultural phenomenon in 2023. Robbie is now in talks to star in Tim Burton's Attack Of The Fifty Foot Woman remake. The 35-year-old actress is being considered for the lead role in the 66-year-old filmmaker's upcoming movie for Warner Bros and she would also produce the film through her LuckyChap production company, according to The Insneider. The original 1958 classic is a science-fiction horror story which follows a wealthy heiress who grows into a giant after an alien encounter and goes on to take revenge on her cheating husband. It was revealed last year that Burton would direct and produce the remake, with Gone Girl author Gillian Flynn writing the script. Andrew Mittman and Tommy Harper are also producing with Kai Dolbashian as executive producer. However, Variety reports that Flynn exited the project due to other commitments after writing a first draft of the screenplay and the producing team is currently searching for a new writer. Robbie's involvement would depend on the final version of the script. Robbie is also set to produce the Ocean's prequel through her LuckyChap Entertainment banner and will also star in the movie alongside her Barbie castmate Ryan Gosling.
