Ex-Giants WR Plaxico Burress' Super Bowl XLII ring sells for near-record
The Super Bowl XLII ring that once belonged to New York Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress has officially sold at auction.
Heritage Auctions revealed on Sunday that the championship ring sold for a whopping $280,600, setting a near-record. It is the second-most expensive Super Bowl ring ever sold behind the Super Bowl V ring belonging to Baltimore Colts head coach Don McCafferty, which fetched a price of $300,000 in 2022.
Burress' ring was put up for auction by an anonymous owner in February and was accompanied by a letter of authentication from the wide receiver himself.
'I, Plaxico Burress, certify this Super Bowl Championship ring, a copy of which is pictured below along with the ring box (on page two), is the actual, authentic ring I received on May 29, 2008 at a private ceremony held with my New York Giants teammates at Tiffany and Co. in New York City,' he wrote in the letter. 'I received this actual ring as a member of the New York Giants who won Super Bowl XLII held February 3, 2008 against the New England Patriots in Phoenix, AZ.
'I further certify this ring is the one and only ring and that no duplicate copies were produced.'
The date on the authentication letter suggests Burress sold the ring in November (11/16/24).
Burress, who is currently working as a FOX Sports Radio host, has dealt with a series of legal and financial issues in the aftermath of Super Bowl XLII, beginning with an accidental self-inflicted wound in 2008 that landed him in jail for 20 months.
A first-round pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2000 NFL draft, Burress retired following the 2013 season.

Yes, his visit with Quinn on Tuesday was much more in keeping with his current job as an NBC analyst, but it still must have been strange for Commanders players to look over during their practice and see the longtime enemy standing there wearing Cowboys colors. Most Washington players, anyway. A few will remember him from their own time in Dallas; Garrett coached Commanders wide receivers Noah Brown and Michael Gallup for multiple seasons, as well as defensive end Dorance Armstrong. And Garrett was a Cowboys teammate of Washington's current linebackers coach, Ken Norton, Jr., for the 1993 season that ended with both men earning a Super Bowl ring. Lame, an Italian-Senegalese creator with around 160 million followers on TikTok, had overstayed the terms of his visa after entering the US on April 30, the spokesperson said. He was briefly detained at Las Vegas's Harry Reid International Airport before being granted voluntary departure. He's since left the country, they said. A representative for Lame declined to comment. The 25-year-old creator became TikTok's most-followed star in 2022 after developing a signature comedic style of silent reactions to social-media absurdities. The creator leveraged his TikTok audience into a business that BI previously reported had grossed $16.5 million in 2023 from brand deals alone. After gaining internet fame, Lame broke into other parts of media, attending this year's Met Gala and building a collection with the clothing brand Hugo Boss. Lame has also partnered with brands like Google, State Farm, and Pepsi, which worked with the creator in a marketing push tied to the 2024 Super Bowl. He's appeared as a character in the video game "Fortnite," and previously said that much of his brand work is in the US. "I don't think I have a single sponsor in Italy," Lame told BI last year. The main thing keeping him in Italy is family, he said.

New York Giants, Jets to hold joint training camp practices The New York Giants won't have to travel far when they conduct joint practices during training camp and the preseason. On Tuesday, New York Jets head coach Aaron Glenn confirmed that the two teams will conduct joint practices ahead of the Week 2 preseason game. One practice will take place at Florham Park with the other taking place in East Rutherford. It was unlikely the Giants were going to have joint practices with the Buffalo Bills ahead of the preseason Week 1 game while the preseason finale against the New England Patriots takes place just four days after the matchup against the Jets. Even though Glenn, the former Jets cornerback from 1994-2001, is a first-time head coach in his career, it was expected that the Jets would conduct some type of joint practices. His recent history as the defensive coordinator of the Detroit Lions likely prepared him for that considering the latter's affinity for physical practices. As is the case with joint practices in today's game, there's a good chance both teams treat the pair of practices as scrimmages. That means some or even most of the starters may not participate in the actual preseason game, giving some of the players lower on the depth chart more snaps to put on tape. The preseason game against the Jets is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 16 at 7:00 p.m. ET, so it's likely the joint practices will take place Wednesday and Thursday of that week.
