Midtjylland boss blames cocky Hibs claim on someone else as he insists Europa League clash is anything but easy

Thomas Thomasberg has walked big his assertion that the Danes would take care of the Hibees over two legs
Midtjylland boss Thomas Thomasberg has reversed ferreted on his cocky claim his side will ease past Hibs – and even tried to blame someone else for saying it., writes Scott Burns in Denmark.

In the aftermath of the Europa League draw, Thomasberg boasted the Danes will progress into the third qualifying round.

But now he has stated David Gray' s side will present a stern challenge for his team.

Thomasberg said: 'I have a feeling that somebody says it was an easy draw for us. Not at all.
'But we knew at that time we could have met Besiktas and Utrecht.
'Still with respect, I think that has been a tough opponent. But we also know that this will be tough.
'We are ready for what is waiting for us. Of course we have the experience. We have tried it before.
'Now it's the first one because when you need to go to the group stage, you play almost six weeks.
'Weekend and midweek. I think our players are used to it. But I also know that they have been waiting for this game.

'So they are looking forward to it. I know they will put everything in they can, with heart and brain.'
The 50-year-old is now in his third season with Midtjylland and in his second spell as their manager.
He knows the job comes with expectations, but is also well aware of possible European pitfalls.

Thomasberg warned: 'Yesterday I saw Copenhagen. They suffered for a long period against a team from Kosovo (Drita). We know all games in Europe and teams have quality.
'We are really prepared and ready for a hard game.'
He wants Midtjylland to make full use of home advantage. Thomasberg admitted: 'We're looking forward to the game. It's always a part of the club to be in Europe.

'We want to go to the group stage every year. This is the first game there and hopefully we can perform well.
'Hopefully, we can get a good start at home. A good start is of course a win. If it's possible to win with more than one.
'It is also about getting a lot of good in Europe. To get to the group stage. Because that's also a part of the way this club will go. So it is very important for us.

'And no matter who it is in these qualification games. There is only one aim. To get to the next round.'
There is a slight element of the unknown for the Danes, as Hibs have still to play a competitive game.
Thomasberg, though, is confident he will have every eventuality covered. He knows the threat of strikers Martin Boyle and Thibaut Klidge.

He explained: ' Right now we have analysts who have had a good look at it. I have watched two games myself.
'They are a good and strong team. We need to do our best to get through to the next round.
'I have seen the game against Essen. There was a good atmosphere at the stadium, I think it was the club's 150th anniversary.

'I have watched some of the games last season. I think it was a home game against Rangers 2-2 at the end of the season.
'They are a good and strong team. They had a very good period after a tough start last season.
'I think they have players who really play with their hearts. They have good offensive players.
'They can get in the box well on set pieces. Like we always are saying, we can't underestimate them.'

Sarina Wiegman: Future of 'incredible' Lionesses boss in question after FA chief's statement

Sarina Wiegman has twice guided England to European success and will attempt to lead the Lionesses to glory in the World Cup in Brazil in two years time before her contract expires FA chief Mark Bullingham has remained coy over the long-term future of Lionesses boss Sarina Wiegman following England's Euros success. The Dutch manager remains under contract for another two years following the nation's Euro 2025 victory over Spain in Basel. ‌ Wiegman succeeded Phil Neville in charge of the team in 2021 and his since guided the team to two European Championship wins and a World Cup final defeat. In January 2024 Wiegman signed an contract extension until 2027 that sees her through until after the next World Cup in Brazil. ‌ But a plan to attempt to tie down Wiegman, 55, down for even longer is not yet in place. Chief executive Bullingham believes it is too early for any such notion. ‌ "It's a bit early for that," he said when asked about potential contract talks. "We are delighted she is with us for the World Cup, and we will have that conversation at an appropriate time. "She is an incredible manager, and we're delighted to be working with her, so that has to be up to her. We will have those conversations when they're ready to go." Bullingham did have plenty of kind words to say about Wiegman however. "She's an incredible person, incredible coach and incredible leader," he said. "We're very lucky to have her, proud to have her as part of the team, and obviously she will be working with us for the World Cup." Bullingham has previously suggested it would not be difficult to convince Wiegman to remain in charge of the Lioness. The FA boss' focus then too was on her being under contract until after the World Cup however. ‌ "Not hard at all," he said. "We are committed to her until 2027, and she is committed to us. We have a new [coaching] team coming in for her. "We haven't quite started working on the plans for [the 2027 World Cup], but I know her focus, hopefully after success on Sunday, will shift quite quickly to that." Wiegman will be afforded some time to celebrate Sunday's victory with her squad. An open top bus parade is set to take place on Tuesday afternoon along The Mall, with a staged ceremony in front of Buckingham Palace to follow. Thomas Frank drops hint on Son Heung-Min plans as transfer offer emerges

Tottenham captain Son Heung-min is understood to be the subject of a £15million offer from LAFC in the MLS but the veteran South Korea international could yet stay put Thomas Frank insists that he sees Son Heung-Min having a 'very good' role to play for Tottenham next season despite interest in the veteran attacker from LAFC. ‌ The Spurs captain, 33, continues to be linked with a move away from the club he joined a decade ago. Interest in his services from overseas has remained throughout the summer and with Son no longer a guaranteed starter, it has been speculated that all parties may decide that a move would be beneficial. ‌ If Son were to depart, he would do so as the first Tottenham captain to lift a European trophy at the club in 41 years following last season's Europa League triumph. ‌ But Frank, Spurs' new head coach, has now come out and said that Son has been earmarked to play an important role next season. "I think first and foremost, Son's legacy here is remarkable," the Dane told Men In Blazers. "He's been a fantastic player for Tottenham, he is a fantastic player for Tottenham. "I see a player that that can play a very good role here next season. He's come in, very good mindset, trained very hard, pushed the players. So I'm excited about it." It emerged last week that Tottenham were considering an offer worth £15million from LAFC for Son, who won the Premier League Golden Boot award back in 2022. He scored seven times in the top-flight last season and registered a further nine assists for Spurs. It remains to be seen if he would be open to moving to the MLS. ‌ It was a disappointing domestic campaign for the north Londoners, who finished all the way down in 17th place. They did, however, atone for that by winning a trophy and qualifying for the Champions League. Now under new management, Tottenham have already bolstered their attack this summer with the captures of Mohammed Kudus and Mathys Tel, the latter joining permanently after spending the second half of the 2024-25 campaign on loan at the club. Further additions are expected before the transfer window shuts on 1 September, too, which could nudge Son further down the pecking order. One player who won't be joining, though, is Morgan Gibbs-White: the Nottingham Forest star has signed a new three-year contract with the club following an approach from Spurs, who were thought to have triggered a release clause in the attacking midfielder's previous deal, only to be threatened with legal action. A move has since broken down.

These are the top Scottish transfer stories, rumours and gossip on Monday morning, including the latest news from Rangers, Celtic, Hibs and the Scotland national team. Hibs dealt Triantis blow Hibs hopes of bringing Nectar Triantis back to Easter Road this summer are looking 'increasingly unlikely' according to a report from the Daily Record. A standout player for the capital outfit after joining on loan from Sunderland last summer, head coach David Gray is keen on reuniting with the 22-year-old midfielder, with Hibs seeking a permanent deal for Triantis. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Sunderland head coach Regis Le Bris had provided an update on the Aussie midfielder at the weekend, who was absent from the Black Cats squad in their 3-0 friendly defeat to Hearts at the weekend for Craig Gordon's testimonial. 'All I can say right now is that we are trying our best to improve the team,' said Le Bris. 'We will have to see what happens. If you look at the Hearts game, then it looks as though we are far away from where we need to be. That is clear. But at the same time, it is always a work in progress.' However, while Triantis may still leave the Stadium of Light this summer, the report claims the chances of him joining Hibs are growing slimmer by the day due to the player's 'significant wage increase' as a result of the Sunderland's promotion back to the English Premier League. Clubs in the EFL Championship, German Bundesliga and MLS are believed to be eyeing a move for the Australian. Sunderland defender Nectar Triantis is a wanted man this summer. | Chris Fryatt Scotland star 'opens talks' Motherwell wonderkid Lennon Miller is edging closer to the Fir Park exit door, according to a report from transfer guru Nicolò Schira. The teenager midfielder is in the final year of his contract, and has been linked with a move to Celtic, Sunderland and clubs in the German Bundesliga this summer after impressing on his full international debut vs Liechtenstein in June. Head coach Jens Berthel Askou had denied denied the player was close to a departure last Friday, saying 'he's still a Motherwell player and we're very happy to have him here.' However, it now looks like the 18-year-old could be joining international teammate Lewis Ferguson at Bologna, after the Coppa Italia champions were said to have opened negotiations with Motherwell over a deal that would see him join I Rossoblu. The report states that talks are ongoing between the two clubs, with Miller offered a contract until 2029 at the Renato Dall'Ara Stadium, with the option to deal for a further year. The 38-year-old veteran had been strongly tipped to move to Glasgow rivals Rangers earlier this summer, after bringing his 13-year stay at the King Power Stadium to an end in June, though no move to Ibrox materialised. The report claims that West Ham United are ready to offer Vardy a route back to the English Premier League, with head coach Graham Potter a big admirer of the player, though he intends to use him more as an impact substitute at the London Stadium. His former boss at Leicester, Rodgers is said to be 'weighing up' the decision to launch a bid for the experienced free agent, with the Hoops head coach keen to strengthen his attacking options ahead of the Scottish Premiership opener against St Mirren later this week. Jamie Vardy has interest from Celtic, according to a fresh report. | Getty Images Rangers 'agree fee' Rangers are closing in on their eighth signing of the summer after agreeing a deal with Go Ahead Eagles for winger Oliver Antman, as per numerous reports. The 23-year-old, who is valued at around £5million, was one of the Eredivisie's standout players last season, but is set to become Russell Martin's newest summer arrival at Ibrox, with a deal likely to be completed 'in the next 24 to 48 hours.' Linked to Sheffield United earlier in the window, it appears Rangers have stolen a march on the Blades in the race for Antman, who scored seven goals and assisted a further 17 for his side last season. It is claimed that the two clubs came to an agreement over a transfer fee over the weekend, and contracts talks with the player have progressed quickly. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad
