T.P. Senkumar cautions against University Laws Amendment Bills

The Hindu23-05-2025

Former State Police Chief T.P. Senkumar has criticised the University Laws (Amendment) Bills, which are currently under consideration of the Governor. He feared the proposed legislation could undermine higher education in the State.
Addressing a protest organised by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-backed Syndicate and Senate members of various universities in front of the Secretariat on Friday (May 23, 2025), Mr. Senkumar stressed on the need to preserve the autonomy of universities. He alleged that the Bills would curtail the powers of the Chancellor and transfer them to the Higher Education Minister and university Registrars.
He further added that the institutions, instead of promoting quality research, will turn into political centres.

Maha govt seeks IT data to verify beneficiaries of Ladki Bahin Yojana

Mumbai June 3 (UNI) Amid allegations that hundreds of ineligible Mantralaya women employees are availing of the benefits of the Ladki Bahin Yojana scheme, the Maharashtra government has sought detailed information from the income tax department about women who have filed returns to ascertain their eligibility, sources in the state secretariat said on Tuesday. 'We have forwarded the request to the Finance Ministry to share the required tax payer data and ITR filed by women in the state,' said a senior tax official. The BJP-headed Mahayuti government with allies drawn from Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde) and NCP (Ajit Pawar) launched the ambitious Ladki Bahin Yojana just before the 2024 assembly elections in which 2 crore 67 lakh women applied and an amount of Rs 7,500 was deposited in the account of every woman for about 5 months without any comprehensive verification. Post-polls, the ruling alliance led by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis ordered a review of the scheme to identify ineligible beneficiaries leading to disqualification of nine lakh women from the Ladki Bahin Yojana scheme. PMGSY funds being siphoned off by Trinamool leaders: Amit Malviya slams Mamata govt

Kolkata: BJP's Information Technology Cell chief and the party's central observer for West Bengal, Amit Malviya, on Tuesday, issued a statement seeking to clarify that the Centre was forced to stop the release of fresh funds under Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) scheme to the Mamata government due to blatant siphoning of funds given earlier to the state. 'Mamata Banerjee's West Bengal is slipping into helplessness and despair. Recently, she questioned why the central government has stopped allocating funds to the state under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY). The answer is straightforward - those funds were being siphoned off by Trinamool leaders instead of being used for public welfare,' Malviya's statement, which he posted on his official X handle, read. Substantiating his claims, Malviya quoted the example of how funds under the PMGSY scheme were blatantly misused at Daspur in the West Midnapore district. According to him, after the roads at Daspur were completely destroyed by the 2018 floods due to overflowing Kangsabati and Kansai Rivers, not a single repair work has been done there in these six years He also claimed that repeated letters and urgent appeals from residents have fallen on deaf ears, thus forcing them to travel by boat for three to four months a year. 'For the rest of the year, they must walk through slush fields, risking life and limb. In medical emergencies, the sick are tied to bamboo poles and carried to ambulances on foot - like it's still the 18th century. This is the grim reality of governance under Trinamool Congress,' Malviya's statement read. The BJP leader further argued that the example of Daspur shows that the plight of the people was not because of the lack of funds but because of misuse, corruption, and complete disregard for the common people. 'West Bengal deserves better,' Malviya's statement read. To recall, Prime Minister Narendra Modi last week, and then the Union Home Minister on Sunday, while addressing their political rallies in Alipurduar and Kolkata respectively, launched scathing attacks against the West Bengal government and the ruling Trinamool Congress on the issue of corruption. Both of them claimed that the common people of West Bengal were denied the basic and minimum services because of the blatant corruption in the system steered by Trinamool Congress leaders at all levels.

Kavitha is a 'BJP arrow; Madhuyashki Goud

Hyderabad, June 2 (UNI) Telangana Congress Campaign Committee Chairman and former MP Madhuyashki Goud launched a scathing attack on BRS MLC K. Kavitha, alleging deep-rooted corruption and political collusion with the BJP. Speaking to reporters at Gandhi Bhavan in Hyderabad on Monday, Goud alleged that Kavitha acted like a "lady mafia don" and described her as "an arrow dropped by the BJP". He accused her of being involved in various scams, and claimed she was seeking BJP's support to escape legal action in these cases. He further alleged that Kavitha misused the Bathukamma cultural platform for political mileage and to protect illicit funds. Goud called for a probe into the functioning of her organisation, Telangana Jagruthi, claiming it was used as a front for financial dealings, including collecting money from firms like Phoenix. He also targeted Kavitha's father, BRS chief K Chandrashekar Rao (KCR), calling him 'the ghost of Telangana' and alleging that the KCR family amassed wealth under the guise of the Telangana movement. He questioned the source of Kavitha's personal wealth and claimed Jagruthi was never handed over to BCs, despite her vocal support for backward classes. Accusing Kavitha of working under the directions of BJP leaders Narendra Modi and Amit Shah, Goud alleged that the so-called "BRS Week" only benefited the BJP. He also claimed that KCR and his family, including Minister K T Rama Rao, held investments abroad and that KTR's foreign trips were meant to manage these assets. Referring to the Congress party's role in the formation of Telangana, Goud stated that if Sonia Gandhi had not granted statehood, KCR and his family would not have had political relevance today. He further alleged KCR's involvement in the liquor scam, claiming discussions around it took place at Pragathi Bhavan. UNI VV ARN
