Ohio man kills wife before graduation party in murder-suicide, authorities say

CBS News02-06-2025
A husband fatally shot his wife before killing himself ahead of a graduation party they were set to host in Ohio, officials said.
In a post on Facebook, the Tuscarawas County Sheriff's Office said law enforcement was called to a home in Dover Township on Sunday around 1:30 p.m. for reports of a shooting.
The sheriff's office said a 911 caller said she was at the home preparing for a graduation party when the shots were fired. The party was for a child who lived at the home but was not in the house when the shooting happened because the party was set to happen hundreds of yards away from the home on the couple's property, authorities said.
The caller reportedly told 911 that a man in the home shot his wife and then shot himself. When law enforcement arrived, the Tuscarawas County Sheriff's Office said they found a man dead on his bed and a woman fatally injured on the floor near the bed. The woman was taken to a hospital in Cleveland, where she died.
CBS affiliate WTRF identified the victims as 53-year-old April Houston and 64-year-old Robert Houston. They were husband and wife and lived at the home, the TV station reported.
The Tuscarawas County Sheriff's Office said preliminary information suggests the deaths were a murder-suicide, but a motive was not immediately known. No other details were released.
Dover Township is about 85 miles north of Cleveland and about 100 miles west of Pittsburgh.

Boy, 11, drowns after becoming stuck in muddy excavation pit

An 11-year-old Free State boy drowned at a construction site in Odendaalsrus while swimming with two friends on Saturday afternoon. 'Odendaalsrus police were summoned to a scene of a drowning at Kutlwanong. On arrival at the scene, members were informed that three boys aged between 10 and 11 were allegedly swimming inside an excavation filled with wastewater,' police spokesperson Sergeant Palesa Thabana said. They became stuck in mud inside the pit. 'Two of the boys, aged 10, managed to get out, while the 11-year-old victim got stuck in the mud and ultimately drowned,' Thabana said. 'The Welkom SAPS diving unit, under the command of Sergeant Arno Cronje, was called to the scene. Together with Matjhabeng fire department members, they retrieved the deceased body from the sewage dump on Saturday evening at about 20:20.' In an unrelated incident in November last year, Vista reported that a 14-year-old boy drowned in a quarry of water filled with sewage in Meloding, Virginia. The boy's friends told the police that a group of them had been swimming in the quarry when one of them drowned. Matjhabeng municipality employees were deployed to drain the sewage. The boy's body was found stuck in mud inside the quarry.

Happy Valley father shot to death; Man, 72, arrested

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A 72-year-old man is accused of shooting to death a 36-year-old father while his wife and child were inside their Happy Valley home Friday night. Around 7 p.m., the man's wife called 911 and said her husband had been shot in their home near 12000 SE Easthampton Street. Deputies rushed to the home, got the woman and her child outside and then found her husband with a gunshot to his chest in the living room. Emergency efforts to save his life did not succeed. Authorities said the father, whose name has not yet been publicly released, died soon after. The alleged shooter, David Lynn Jurgenson, was standing outside the home when deputies arrived. He was taken into custody without incident and was booked into the Clackamas County Jail for 2nd-degree murder and unlawful use of a weapon. The investigation continues but officials said Jurgenson and the victim knew each other. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
