'The Buccaneers' Season 2 on Apple TV+: Kristine Frøseth made the crew cry in this scene

Yahoo19-06-2025
The Apple TV+ show The Buccaneers is back for Season 2, making its return with a story that is more messy and emotional, as the stakes for all its characters are higher than ever. The season picks up right where we left off, as we see Nan (Kristine Frøseth) marry Theo (Guy Remmers), becoming the Duchess of Tintagel as a way to protect her sister Jinny (Imogen Waterhouse), and Jinny's unborn child, from the abusive Lord James Seadown (Barney Fishwick).
While newspaper covers have stories about Seadown's missing wife, Ginny and Guy (Matthew Broom) are staying safe in Italy. But there are clearly still feelings between Nan and Guy that they both have to put aside for Jinny's protection.
Something The Buccaneers really excelled in during Season 1 was using the costumes, hair and makeup to make a big visual impact for key moments of the story. That's very true of Season 2 as well, including one moment that brought the show's costume designer, Kate Carin, to tears.
Near the end of Season 2 premiere episode, Nan has a conversation with the Dowager Duchess of Tintagel (Amelia Bullmore), initially insisting she know where her sister is, while the Dowager Duchess insists that Jinny is safer if Nan doesn't know details of her whereabouts. But Nan has concerns that Jinny will be discovered with so much coverage of Seadown's "missing" wife in the newspapers.
"Some more fascinating story will come along to knock Jinny from the headlines," the Dowager Duchess says. "Now go and show the world how you intend to behave."
Then, while Nan sees the black dress hung up for her for that evening's Black & White Ball, where she will make her debut as the Duchess, she has an idea. Nan shows up to the ball a stunning red gown, paired with red lipstick and an intricate braided up-do, as the Sabrina Carpenter song "Looking at Me" plays. Nan realizes she can make headlines herself, getting her sister out of the newspapers.
"It's a scary thing in terms of writing it on a page, and talking about it in a writer's room, because you go, 'And then there will be this amazing moment where she comes out in this dress and she looks fabulous and everybody looks at her.' And you have to trust that the team are going to pull it out the bag, but it's fantastic," the show's creator, Katherine Jakeways, told Yahoo Canada. "The way that it was shot as well, it really worked."
"Kate Carin cried when she saw her wearing it for the first time. ... We were all crying a lot, we're very attached."
"There were 10 people in Glasgow sewing that dress It was a kind of real labour of love," producer Joe Innes added.
As executive producer Beth Willis explained, the first episode of the season explores how Nan feels after her wedding and ends up "laying down the gauntlet" after the Dowager is pressuring Nan to do as she's told.
"She's bullied her into this marriage. She's blackmailed her. She wants her to be quiet. She's telling her that her sister will eventually get out of the headlines, and just to stay quiet and behave," Willis said. "And there's something so powerful, empowering, exciting, delicious about Nan going, yeah you know what, I'm the Duchess now, and you've got trouble on your hands, because I'm not going to play by the rules."
"That just delighted us so much as an idea and being able to do it in that visual way, a Black & White ball, with a Sabrina Carpenter track over the top of it, just felt like enormous fun."
But for Nan, part of her journey is understanding the power she has as the Duchess, and how that can help not just Jinny, but all women.
"She chooses to just keep going and getting up, getting out of bed and trying to make better choices," Kristine Frøseth said. "And initially it's about her sister and trying to protect her, but it will have a big impact for a lot of women. So I think she's incredible in that aspect."A particularly exciting addition to The Buccaneers Season 2 is Leighton Meester as Nelle, Nan's biological mother and Patricia's (Christina Hendricks) sister.
"I think we were just all super dedicated to creating the relationship that would read on screen, that there was history," Christina Hendricks said. "There's so much in these characters in such a quick amount of time, ... it moves in such a quick pace."
"We would text each other anytime we could to say, like, 'Do you have a moment? Let's talk about this. I had this idea. I was wondering if you felt the same way.' And I think we were all super committed to finding any moments we could to sort of facilitate making that relationship work."
Adding to that, the first episode also shows Patricia taking a stand against her husband, saying that she wants a divorce.
"Tracy's a shit, so this needed to be talked about," Hendricks said.
"It's great that we're showing a divorce on a period show and doing our sort of modern take on it. ... He's such a creep. Everyone knows it, but it's also terrifying for her."
While a core part of The Buccaneers is the friendship we see between this core group of women, things change in Season 2. There's still so much love there, but dynamics are shifting throughout the season.
"I think the friendship is the absolute beating heart of the show," Willis said. "And right from the beginning, before we even started work on series one, we knew that Nan would choose Jinny over the two boys in that final episode, and I think that love will always be there between all of them."
"But as is true of life, when you have a group of friends in your 20s and it's just all about parties and fun, and who do I fancy? Who fancies me? Who might I get together with? It's kind of fun and it's frivolous. And as you get a bit older in life and responsibilities hit you, you're pulled apart from your friends, and sometimes you don't behave as you'd like to think you might behave. And there are betrayals and there are jealousies. And we know that all roads lead to them loving each other, but we definitely explore them in Season 2."

Queen Elizabeth's senior aide gives approval to new royal play

Queen Elizabeth's senior dresser Angela Kelly is a big fan of a new play about her relationship with the monarch. Daisy Goodwin's By Royal Appointment was inspired by the late monarch and her personal assistant's working relationship and Daisy revealed Angela actually attended a performance of the play and was impressed with how 'true to the Queen' it was. Daisy told HELLO! Magazine: 'She wrote me such a sweet note afterwards to say how much she'd enjoyed it. She felt it was truthful and it had made her well up. 'I thought that was so impressive. It takes a lot of nerve to watch something that's meant to be you on stage. She was big enough to see that what I've done was not her but true to her position. I think she thought it was true to the Queen so I was thrilled by that.' Daisy also spoke about how Angela's circumstances have changed since the death of Queen Elizabeth in 2022, going from a role 'at the heart of the court' to obscurity. She said: 'You go from having been one of the most powerful people at the heart of the court to someone whose services are no longer required and I thought 'here is a great story'. 'I didn't want her to feel exploited but now that she's seen it, she knows it's an affectionate portrait of the Queen and a realistic portrait of her. 'I imagine that in a world of courtiers, to have someone like Angela, who is not to the manor born, in a position of power, must have been quite tricky. She didn't suffer fools gladly.' And, Daisy was also fascinated by Queen Elizabeth's relationship with fashion. She explained: 'Here is a woman who isn't interested in fashion at all. What she wanted to wear was a Barbour or a headscarf. And yet she was the most famous clotheshorse in the world.' By Royal Appointment is currently on a national tour with Anne Reid as the Queen and Caroline Quentin as the dresser.

'Better than 10/10': Why 'perfectly cast' period drama The Count of Monte Cristo should be your weekend watch

Cancel your weekend plans and get ready for a sweeping, character-driven epic! Period drama The Count of Monte Cristo lands on our screens this Saturday, bringing the grandeur and grit of 19th century Europe to life. The U&Drama series, which was called "better than 10/10" when it first aired in Switzerland last year, is perfectly cast with Jeremy Irons and Sam Claflin playing the leads, and is the sort of series you can get lost in for hours. Many of the best period dramas are based on classic novels and The Count of Monte Cristo is no different. The eight-part series is an adaptation of Alexandre Dumas's 1846 book of the same name, an adventure tale of love, betrayal and revenge. If you've never cracked open Dumas's book, it centres around young sailor Edmond Dantès (Claflin) who's falsely imprisoned, but when fellow prisoner Abbé Faria (Irons) tells him where a vast treasure is hidden, Dantès escapes, finds it and embarks on a whole new life. With Oscar-winning filmmaker Bille August on directing duty, and the series shot across Paris, Turin, Rome, and Malta, it's got must-watch written all over it. Before you tune in, here's everything you need to know about The Count of Monte Cristo, from the plot to the cast and how to watch it. What is The Count of Monte Cristo about? As we mentioned, the series is based on Alexandre Dumas's 1846 book of the same name. It's a weighty book, but here's a brief synopsis. When young sailor Edmond Dantès (Sam Claflin) is falsely accused of being a political traitor by jealous rivals, he's imprisoned on grim island fortress Château d'If. While jailed he meets fellow inmate Abbé Faria (Jeremy Irons) who reveals where some hidden treasure is buried. After a daring escape, Dantès reinvents himself as the mysterious and wealthy Count of Monte Cristo. Armed with a newfound fortune and various disguises, he sets off on a quest to exact revenge on those who wrongly accused him. Who's in the cast of The Count of Monte Cristo? The brilliant cast of The Count of Monte Cristo includes: Sam Claflin as Edmond Dantès Jeremy Irons as Abbé Faria Ana Girardot as Mercédès Harry Taurasi as Fernand Mondego Mikkel Boe Følsgaard as Gérard de Villefort Blake Ritson as Danglars Karla-Simone Spence as Haydée Reece Putinas as The Inspector Michele Riondino as Jacopo Lino Guanciale as Vampa Nicolas Maupas as Albert De Morcerf Gabriella Pession as Hermine Robin Greer as Maximilien Morrel Amaryllis August as Valentine de Villefort Bastien Fontaine-Oberto as Franz Poppy Corby-Tuech as Héloïse Ramona Von Pusch as Isabelle Greg Hughes as Boville Nell Baker as Julie Lynette Creane as Marie Tom van der Loop as a blacksmith Jason Barnett as Caderousse Nicholas Farrell as Morrel Is The Count of Monte Cristo any good? Yes, director Bille August is an Oscar-winner after all, and with the series shot between France, Italy and Malta in authentic historical settings, it gives it a really vivid, 19th century feel. It's been highly praised by Swiss and Swedish audiences and when series was released in Italy earlier this year, it became the most-watched show in three years on the country's biggest TV network. It's said to bring a modern feel to the classic, with viewers saying it gives a more nuanced portrayal of the characters than older versions have had. Jeremy Irons told Variety that 'Alexandre Dumas is a wonderful writer and this [series] feels rather topical,' adding, 'I think it has something to say about modern society: we haven't changed as people.' How can I watch The Count of Monte Cristo? Luckily, there's not long to wait before you can enjoy a bit of historical escapism. The eight-part premieres on U&Drama on Saturday 2nd August. The first episode will air at 9pm on, with every episode landing on the U and U&Drama streaming apps straight after. What other period dramas can I watch? Hungry for more historical storytelling? There's a ton of lavish period drama material to dig into, alongside well-loved classics such as The Crown and Bridgerton. We love Yorkshire rags-to-riches family saga The Hardacres, which has just been renewed for a second instalment. You can catch up on series 1 on 5. If you're looking for more juicy, soap drama with a Julian Fellowes feel, try Belgravia: The Next Chapter, a Downton-meets-Bridgerton drama that's perfect to binge. We're also marking our calendars for even more period dramas coming our way: later this year, The Forsytes, from the creators of Poldark, promises another gripping hit. And next year, keep an eye out for Dolly Alderton's fresh new take on Pride and Prejudice starring Olivia Colman and Jack Lowden.
