Jane Austen fans dress up in Steventon to celebrate 250 years since author's birth

ITV News6 days ago
ITV reporter Derek Johnson spoke to Austen fans who'd travelled to Hampshire from across the world.
People from all over the world have converged on the village of Steventon to celebrate the life of author Jane Austen.
The Pride and Prejudice author was born and grew up in this picturesque part of Hampshire, later returning to live in nearby Chawton.
Today saw a Regency-style country fair marking the 250th anniversary of her birth.
Austen was born at Stevenage rectory in 1775. Her father, and later her brother, were rectors at 13th Century church of St Nicholas.
And proceeds from the day will go towards renovations at the church.
Although the rectory no longer remains, the fair was held on the exact location, and featured performances by the Hampshire Regency Dancers, Garston Gallopers and local schoolchildren.
Many of those attending dressed in Regency-style clothes, some travelling from as far afield as the United States and Australia.
Village residents were involved in planning and organising the event, from baking cakes, making costumes and providing a horse and trap, in which 'Jane' arrived to get the fair started.
The event was part of a year of celebrations in mid Hampshire, which will conclude with a special service at the church on 16th December, Austen's actual birthday.

TV's biggest game show flops after David Tennant series ‘axed' – and the surprise hits

Ford Kiernan loved the quiz show so much he tried to bring it back, saying, 'I approached STV but it turned out some Dutch company owned the rights.' GAME ON TV's biggest game show flops after David Tennant series 'axed' – and the surprise hits Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) DAVID Tennant's turn as a game show host has ended in disaster - after his flop The Genius Game got the same viewing figures as a BBC2 show about pangolins. The reality game show hosted by the Scots actor is believed to have cost ITV £2.5million to make but drew an average audience of just 661,000 - matched by Pangolins: The World's Most Wanted Animal. Sign up for the Entertainment newsletter Sign up 6 Alexander Armstrong has proved to be a popular host of Pointless. 6 Paddy McGuinnes saw the lost of three million viewers as Question of Sport host before the BBC cancelled it. 6 Johnny Beattie was a cult hit as a game show host. Still Game's Ford Kiernan wanted to host a reboot. However David, 54, isn't the only actor to have made the surprise career choice of hosting a telly quiz. JOHNNY BEATTIE - HIT THE legendary Scot started his showbiz career as a comic but was actually renowned for his serious acting roles - appearing alongside Liam Neeson in the 1990 film The Big Man. Johnny, who passed away in 2020 aged 93, also played a baddie in Taggart and was popular as River City OAP Malcolm Hamilton which he played from 2002 until 2015. But Johnny also hosted the STV gameshow Now You See It from 1981-1984, which Still Game creator Ford Kiernan loved so much he tried to bring, saying: 'I approached STV but it turned out some Dutch company owned the rights.' NICHOLAS PARSONS - HIT 6 The English public school boy cut his teeth on the tough Clyde shipyards before hosting Just a Minute of Radio 4 for 52 years. THE English public school boy dreamed of being an entertainer but his family disapproved so to please them he trained as a mechanical engineer on the Clydeside shipyards. Nicholas, who died in 2020 aged 96, stayed in Glasgow throughout World War II, where he won a radio talent contest before going on to appear in a series of 1950s films including Upstairs and Downstairs and Too Many Crooks. But he became a national treasure as the genial host of ITV's Sale of the Century, and for over 50 years also chaired the comedy panel game show Just A Minute, in which contestants must avoid hesitation, repetition or deviation. RICHARD O'BRIEN - FLOP 6 Richard O'Brien's unconventional was a miss with viewers. RICHARD O'Brien is probably best known for writing the musical The Rocky Horror Picture Show which in starred in as the sinister handyman Riff Raff. But the 83 year old English actor made the leap to quiz show host in 1990 when he took the helm of Channel 4's The Crystal Maze. His sarcastic put-downs and random harmonica playing saw the show reach a peak audience of seven million viewers in 1993, but two years later it was cancelled. BRADLEY WALSH - HIT BRADLEY is another who took the comedy route to acting where he went on to star as Danny Baldwin in Coronation Street for two years from 2004. He also appeared as copper DS Ronnie Brooks in Law & Order: UK for five years from 2009 and was a regular in Doctor Who. But Bradley, 65, has carved out a niche as one of the most in demand game show hosts starting with Wheel of Fortune in 1997 then Odd One In (2010–2011), Keep It in the Family (2014–2015), Cash Trapped (2016–2019), and Blankety Blank and The Chase which he still presents to this day. PADDY MCGUINNESS - FLOP FOUND fame starring in Peter Kay's Channel smash hit Phoenix Nights and then the spin-off series Max And Paddy's Road to Nowhere at the start of the noughties. But Paddy, 51, has concentrated on presenting work since then hosting the ITV date game show Take Me Out from 2010 to 2019 and hosting Tempting Fortune for the last two years. However, taking over the BBC longest running quiz show A Question Of Sport in 2021 from Sue Barker saw ratings plummet from four million to one million, before the telly chiefs pulled the plug for good. ALEXANDER ARMSTRONG - HIT THE English actor made his name as one half of the comedy duo Armstrong and Miller with Ben Miller after the pair were snapped up for telly after a successful Edinburgh Festival run in the 1990s. But Alexander continues to have a string of acting credits to his name including Doctor Who and playing an alien supercomputer in Time Lord's spin-off series The Sarah Jane Adventures. However these days the 55 year old is probably best known as the host of Pointless, which debuted on BBC Two in 2009 before moving to BBC One in 2011 and is still on screen to this day along with the spin-off Pointless Celebrities.

It came after the Scottish presenter's year-round hour-long show was reduced to just 30 weeks of 30-minute slots. Lorraine — who has worked for ITV since 1984, including GMTV with Eamonn Holmes — flew to Norway last month for the secret project. A source said: 'Channel 4 were delighted to have Lorraine on board. It was exciting for Lorraine to do something different and be on location again. "She's survived in this business a long time and she's a master at rolling with the punches.' The switch by Lorraine, 65, comes after the job of Head of Lorraine was axed, with her two producers now reporting to This Morning bosses. The source added: 'This latest shake-up and slimming-down of Lorraine's dedicated team casts further doubt on the long-term future of the show after her contract finishes next year. "She's opening her eyes up to the many options available to her.' A disappointed Lorraine show source said: 'Amid these changes the team have been gutted. Lorraine Kelly struggles to keep straight face in most bizarre interview to date "They can't understand why ITV would want to dismantle such a successful rating-busting programme. It's a great shame.' Lorraine, who is a regular guest on Channel 4's comedy panel show The Last Leg, revealed last month that she relishes broadening her horizons. I've always been a bit naughty. Not so much in the morning but if I do a wee show on Channel 4, or The Last Leg, or something like that, you can be unleashed Lorraine Kelly Speaking to chef Tom Kerridge on the Proper Tasty podcast, she said: 'Forty years in TV last year was incredible. I got a Bafta. 'Here's a Bafta for being alive'. 'I thought, 'Hang on a minute, I'm not done yet'. 'I think now I can be a lot cheekier. 'I've always been a bit naughty. Not so much in the morning but if I do a wee show on Channel 4, or The Last Leg, or something like that, you can be unleashed. I quite like that.' Channel 4 declined to comment. ITV said: 'We have always said that from January 2026, Lorraine, This Morning and Loose Women will be three editorially distinct shows which will be produced by one team. 'These changes are not about the performance of the shows or the staff. We can assure our viewers that their favourite daytime shows will remain familiar to them on screen.' 5 Lorraine with Eamonn Holmes on GMTV Credit: Rex Features

Jeff Lynne's Electric Light Orchestra cancel performance at BST Hyde Park

Musician Lynne, who was due to headline on Sunday, has pulled out on the advice of doctors following a 'systemic infection'. A statement said: 'Jeff Lynne is heartbroken to report that he will not be able to perform at tomorrow's BST Hyde Park show. A post shared by BST Hyde Park (@bsthydepark) 'Jeff has been battling a systemic infection and is currently in the care of a team of doctors who have advised him that performing is simply not possible at this time nor will he be able to reschedule. 'The legacy of the band and his longtime fans are foremost in Jeff's mind today – and while he is so sorry that he cannot perform, he knows that he must focus on his health and rehabilitation at this time.' It comes after the rock band, best known for their hit song Mr Blue Sky, pulled out of a performance at Manchester's Co-Op Live, due to take place on July 10. The band was formed in Birmingham in 1970 by Lynne, multi-instrumentalist Roy Wood and drummer Bev Bevan, but first split in 1986. They are known for fusing classical music, Beatles-style pop and futuristic rock visuals, and were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2017. They are behind the 1970s hits Livin' Thing, Mr Blue Sky, Telephone Line and Evil Woman. Singer, multi-instrumentalist and record producer Lynne resurrected the band in 2014. On September 14 that year, Lynne teamed up with the BBC Concert Orchestra to play some of the band's greatest hits at a comeback concert at BST Hyde Park. They released the album From Out Of Nowhere in 2019 and it soared to number one on the UK albums charts, joining Discovery (1979), Time (1981) and their compilation album, All Over the World: The Very Best Of Electric Light Orchestra (2005). ELO also had a number of top 10 songs in the UK singles charts, including Don't Bring Me Down, Hold On Tight and Shine A Little Love. Lynne was made an OBE in the 2020 Queen's Birthday Honours list for services to music, and received a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame in 2015.
