Michael B Tretow dead as ABBA in mourning after sound engineer dies
The family of Michael B Tretow have announced the sad news that he has passed away at the age of 80. The sound engineer was a giant in Swedish music and worked with ABBA.
ABBA has been struck by grief after the loss of their prominent sound engineer, Michael B. Tretow, who died at 80.
Tretow was hailed as a towering figure in the Swedish music scene, not just for his work with ABBA but also as an accomplished musician in his own right. Following his death, all four members of the iconic group expressed their heartfelt condolences, each sharing personal tributes, reports the Mirror.
Benny Andersson remarked: "You meant more to us four in ABBA than anyone else. I hope and believe that you felt it throughout all the years that have passed since we worked (and continuously laughed) in the studio. Our music lives on, it seems, and you are the one who made it timeless. You were a fantastic inspirer and joy-maker. And the finest sound engineer the world has ever seen. I miss you. And I've saved all your coconuts!"
In tandem, Bjorn Ulvaeus shared his thoughts, stating: "His significance for ABBA cannot be overestimated. He was a warm, generous person and a good friend. Thanks, Micke, for all the laughs!" Anni-Frid Lyngstad also gave her tribute in a statement to Aftonbladet, affirming: "You were the security in our little studio bubble with your never-ending creativity, warmth and joy, and no one fit the bill as well as you! For us, you are forever part of the ABBA sound and you will never be forgotten!"
Agnetha Fältskog has expressed her heartfelt sorrow, "So glad I got to spend some time with you a few weeks ago... You were so sick, but your laughter and humour were still there... So many memories are preserved, your encouraging words during the recordings meant so much. We are sad now, a talented and unique person has left us. Sleep well Micke, you are in our hearts forever."
The Mixdown website's article on his innovative production techniques notes how Tretow's expertise shone through ABBA hits such as Ring-Ring, Waterloo, and Super Trouper. His signature sound was defined by tom-heavy drum mixing, which did not include cymbal miking to ensure they didn't overshadow the subtle vocal parts.
Tretow was also an early adopter of using three C414 condenser microphones for recording the grand piano, enhancing the resonance in ABBA's classic tracks like Mamma Mia, S. O. S, and Ring Ring.
As reported by The Swedish Herald late Tuesday night, after working at Metronome Studio, Tretow became ABBA's treasured sound engineer in the 1970s under the watchful eye of Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson.
He collaborated on all of Abba's albums except their 2021 release "Voyage" shaping the iconic ABBA sound. His passing may bring the four members of Abba together once more, albeit for a sombre occasion, should they attend his funeral service.
The group is seldom seen together, but they did reunite for a photo at the 2022 premiere of their Abba voyage concert experience. Fans have expressed their sorrow online, with one posting: "Oh no that is so sad, my sincere condolences to his family and friends, gosh he was so important in the creative world of Abba. Sad sad news."
Another fan remarked, "So sad... He truly was the 5th Member of ABBA," while a third shared: "Aww so sad... I really liked him when viewing ABBA videos, etc May God bless his family and friends."
Michael leaves behind his son Rasmus Tretow and his wife Malin Hertzman.

Love Island's secret sex rules as bosses make jaw-dropping change
As we wait for the new series of Love Island to kick off tonight, the Mirror lifts the lid on the show's secret sex rules as bosses allow sex scenes to be aired for the first time this summer ITV's Love Island has a string of secret sex rules, which the saucy singletons must follow. The new series of the smash-hit dating show, which kicks off tonight, is sure to be one of the steamiest yet after bosses revealed that sex scenes would be aired i n the Hideaway for the first time this summer. The jaw-dropping move has divided viewers, with some saying they don't know want to see what pops up beneath the sheets under the Spanish sun. However, others, think the rule change is just what the new series needs as executive producer Mike Spencer said: "If sex happens, we'll show it. The Hideaway will be open 24 hours. We need to keep the show fresh and exciting." So, as we wait for the new series to launch later when we'll finally be introduced to the class of 2025, here's all the sex rules the contestants must follow, including an outright ban on masturbating... READ MORE: Love Island contestant who replaced axed star admits he's already broken show rules Outright ban on masturbating Before going into the villa, all the Love Island contestants are prepped on what they can and can't do to ensure their strict sexual behaviour guidelines are met. There is an outright ban on masturbating in the villas and despite most of the contestants wearing very little in the show, no one is allowed to get fully naked in front of the cameras as it's a 'public place'. This even applies in the shower. Safety first Safe sex is paramount and each contestant is offered an STI-test before entering the villa. Love Island star Marcel Somerville has said that in his experience, the bosses of the show made a big push for safe sex - adding that anyone going on the show must pass an STI test. Marcel, who said he didn't have sex himself while he was in the villa, told The Mirror that the show does strict testing before people go in the villa, revealing that "quite a few" tests are done before people sign up for the show. To make sure the contestants are practicing safe sex, ITV bosses provide their own brand of condoms which are readily available with up to 200 packets of the contraceptive aids put in the villa at the start of the series. Former contestant, Kaz Crossley, managed to nab a bag of the branded condoms when she was dumped from the villa, sharing a snap of the loot with the caption: " to get my money's worth after being dumped, clearly." Drunk sex is banned Drunk sex – and getting drunk in general – is also banned in the Love Island villa as there is a two-drink limit per night for each Islander. Although the Islanders are given booze during their evening parties, contestants are not allowed to get drunk with an explicit number of drinks given to each contestant. After Andrea-Jane was dumped from the villa during the seventh series of the show, the blonde bombshell lifted the lid on the drinking rules inside the villa. She told Capital FM: 'It is a two-drink limit. And usually, you get your first drink and then you have to wait around three hours until the second one." Couples must see counsellor post-sex Anyone who does have sex in the villa must see a counsellor afterwards and can gain access to the morning after pill if needed. The contestants are also offered therapy when the show ends, with Love Island OG Amy Hart, previously praising producers, telling the Mirror the show 'saved her' with its 'exceptional' level of aftercare. A string of saucy singletons have had sex in the villa, including Jon Clark and Hannah Elizabeth, who 'christened' the villa when the show first aired in 2015 – with Jon declaring it was the 'best night of my life'. Meanwhile, in series two, Olivia and Alex Bowen had sex up to 30 times while Malin Andersson and Terry Walsh couldn't keep their hands off each other - and even did the deed in front of their housemates. The couple bizarrely decided to slide under their bed sheets in the middle of the day while in the middle of a conversation with the other islanders, but it was pretty obvious what they were up to. After dumping Malin, Terry moved on with Emma Jane Woodham who he brazenly had sex with on top of the covers in front of everyone. Speaking afterward in the Beach Hut, Emma admitted her dad wouldn't be impressed with her actions. She said: "Me and Terry had a bit of a kiss and a cuddle when we went upstairs last night. "My pops is very disapproving, so he won't like that very much." * Love Island 2025 starts tonight on ITV at 9pm

BBC Death Valley viewers 'switch off' over 'one of most annoying TV characters'
Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info Death Valley has been hit with a wave of criticism, with viewers reportedly "switching off" just minutes into the third episode. The six-part drama, which aired its third instalment on Sunday, 8 June, stars Timothy Spall as John Chapel and Gwyneth Keyworth as DS Janie Mallowan, investigating the mysterious death of a best man. However, despite drawing in viewers, it was for all the wrong reasons. Disgruntled fans didn't hold back in criticising the show on social media, with one irate viewer exclaiming: "What on earth is this rubbish?". "#DeathValley No wonder everyone is talking about it... It's utter nonsense and woke to boot. Refund the BBC if this is the best they can churn out." Another unhappy fan voiced their disappointment: "Heard it was bad, but blimey it's horrendously bad. The lead lady is so irritating and the script is painfully unfunny. A new low for BBC Sunday night viewing, absolutely horrendous," reports the Mirror. For some, frustration reached its peak, leading them to switch off their televisions, as one viewer admitted: "Caught up with #DeathValley on BBC1. I love stuff starring Timothy Spall but just had to turn off after a few minutes due to the awful co-star detective played by Gwyneth Keyworth shouting all the time. She must be one of the most annoying TV characters ever." Another viewer was left thoroughly unimpressed, taking to social media to express their disdain: "#DeathValley on BBC1 is one of the worst programmes I've ever sat through!". Despite some harsh critiques, there are viewers who have found joy in the series, with one fan posting: "I know a lot of people seem to enjoy slagging off #DeathValley, and I admit that when I saw the initial trailer, I thought it looked poor. "However, having binged the series the other day, I can quash my original reticence and say that I loved it. Daft, funny, cosy and Welsh." Adding to the positive feedback, another viewer shared their enjoyment: "Enjoying #DeathValley too. It's Sunday night viewing and I remember 'By the Sword Divided' and 'The Pallisers' so this is quite fun." Despite a mix of reviews, Death Valley has managed to pull in impressive viewing figures, as reported by the BBC. The show's first episode, which aired on 25 May, drew in a significant 2.9 million viewers on BBC One. This strong debut marks the most successful launch for a new BBC Scripted Comedy in the last five years, surpassing Ludwig's premiere last September, which had an audience of 2.8 million.

LBC spark fury with pro-Israel report on seizure of Madleen Gaza ship
Overnight, Israel captured the Madleen ship, part of the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, which had been headed to Gaza to deliver a 'symbolic' amount of aid. Swedish activist Greta Thunberg, French MEP Rima Hassan, and journalist Omar Faiad were among the 12 people on board, who were all detained by Israel, reportedly in international waters. The ship was flying the UK red ensign, meaning it was under the UK Government's jurisdiction, and Labour are facing calls to act. READ MORE: UK Government sends spy plane over Gaza as Freedom Flotilla ship threatened by Israel Israel's government labelled the aid mission a 'selfie yacht' in a bid to undermine the activists and journalists, who had been aiming to highlight or even break the blockade Israel has imposed on Gaza, sparking fears of famine in the region. Israel Katz, the country's defence minister, said that the detained activists would be made to watch a film about the October 7 attacks after arriving in Ashdod, a port city some 17 miles north of Gaza. Reporting on the developing situation, LBC published a story which began: 'Israeli forces have put an end to Greta Thunberg's 'Freedom Flotilla' stunt.' On social media, the story was shared with the caption: 'Greta Thunberg's 'selfie yacht' stunt brought to an end as boat is intercepted – and Israel will force those on board to watch harrowing video of October 7.' The framing has been widely criticised, including by human rights lawyers and activists. This is the reprehensible level the British media has stooped to. An act of piracy and kidnapping described as this. Beyond parody. This is where we are. — liam cunningham (@liamcunningham1) June 9, 2025 Irish actor Liam Cunningham, known for appearing in Game of Thrones, shared the LBC and wrote: 'This is the reprehensible level the British media has stooped to. An act of piracy and kidnapping described as this. 'Beyond parody. This is where we are.' Shoaib M Khan, a lawyer who chairs the Human Rights Lawyers Association, said: 'Not that LBC has much credibility left now, but what a disgusting way of describing a genocidal regime forcibly taking over a British-flagged vessel and kidnapping the people trying to deliver aid.' Zara Mohammed, the former general secretary of the Muslim Council of Britain, said: 'Cannot believe the framing of this from LBC, only when you click the article do you read these are the IDF lines…' READ MORE: 'They have sandwiches': Outrage as Israel releases footage of Flotilla hostages Author and journalist Ash Sarkar added: 'This kind of editorial framing is the lowest of the low. 'It is fundamentally misleading ('selfie yacht'), takes the position of the Israeli government as fact, and has virtually 0 informational content. 'Embarrassing from LBC.' LBC has been approached for comment. The Freedom Flotilla Coalition, which had organised the voyage, said the activists were 'kidnapped by Israeli forces' while trying to deliver desperately needed aid to the territory. SOS! the volunteers on 'Madleen' have been kidnapped by Israeli forces. Greta Thunberg is a Swedish citizen. Pressure their foreign ministries and help us keep them safe! Web: X : @SweMFA FB : @SweMFA IG : swedishmfa#AllEyesOnMadeleen — Freedom Flotilla Coalition (@GazaFFlotilla) June 9, 2025 'The ship was unlawfully boarded, its unarmed civilian crew abducted, and its life-saving cargo — including baby formula, food and medical supplies —confiscated,' it said in a statement. Israel is illegally occupying Gaza and prevents any international media from entering the Palestinian region. Since the Hamas attacks of October 7, Israel has killed more than 54,000 Palestinians, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, which has said women and children make up most of the dead. Israel has also destroyed vast areas of Gaza and displaced around 90% of the territory's population, leaving people there almost completely dependent on international aid. It has announced plans to take control of the Palestinian land, which would represent further breaches of international law. Who is on board the Madleen? There are twelve civilian crew members on board the ship, which is flying the UK flag. The crew members are:
