42 testify in Gundicha temple stampede case in Puri
On Tuesday, statements of 40 government employees engaged in Rath Yatra and were on duty in the Gundicha temple area were recorded. The previous day, 48 persons, including social activists, NGO members and two institutions, had deposed before the inquiry officer. Similarly, at Bhubaneswar, 17 persons had recorded their statements.
Those who deposed attributed the tragedy to several factors including untimely closure of deity darshan causing devotee gathering to swell near the chariots, inadequate security arrangement, sudden entry of two trucks carrying charmalas (ladder parts) for Pahandi rituals into the crowded area, and non-availability of ambulance and healthcare staff that delayed transportation of injured to hospitals.
After completion of the inquiry, the exact cause of the mishap could be ascertained, Garg informed the media.

Puri Police have started an investigation, with Puri SP Pinak Mishra saying efforts have been initiated to identify the suspects by scanning CCTV footage Panic gripped residents of the holy city of Puri following threat messages on the walls of the Jagannath temple, raising serious security concerns for the famous 12th century shrine. The graffiti was spotted on the walls of the temple's southern Parikrama Marg. Warning messages were seen on the temple wall near the Balisahi entrance of the Parikrama Prakalpa (heritage corridor), a popular route taken by devotees. The threats were written at two locations on the wall of the Budhi Maa Thakurani temple. Much to the alarm of locals and temple authorities, the prominent wall writings included phrases like 'Terrorists will destroy the temple'. The messages also mentioned multiple phone numbers with instructions to 'call". The miscreants also vandalised decorative lights installed in the area. The defacement of the temple wall occurred in a high-security zone which is constantly under the scrutiny of CCTVs and security personnel. Puri Police have started an investigation, with Puri SP Pinak Mishra saying efforts have been initiated to identify the suspects by scanning CCTV footage and ascertain their motive behind such a brazen act. 'We are taking this matter very seriously as it concerns the security of the temple. Our team, which visited the spot, has gathered several important pieces of information. Only after apprehending the culprit will we be able to say for what purpose it was written," Mishra said. Responding to concerns about surveillance, the SP explained that although CCTV coverage is part of the Parikrama Project, installation is still pending in certain sections. 'We're currently checking if cameras were in place at the exact location of the incident. We've gathered some leads and are actively pursuing them," he said. The incident has not just spread fear among locals but also stressed the immediate need for stepping up surveillance measures at one of the most revered sites in the country. This is not a singular episode of the temple's security coming under threat. In the recent past, there were multiple cases of devotees entering the Srimandir premises with hidden spy cameras. A few youths had also scaled the temple walls to enter the premises, questioning the efficacy of the shrine's security apparatus. Threatening graffiti found near Jagannath Temple, Puri Police on high alert
Bhubaneswar: The Puri Police are on their toes after graffiti threatening an attack on the famous Jagannath Temple at the sacred coastal town was spotted on the walls of a small temple near the 12th-century shrine on Wednesday. An unknown person has written 'Terrorist will destroy the Temple' in Odia language on two locations of the wall of Budhi Maa Thakurani temple, located on the southern side of the temple near Balisahi entrance of the Puri Parikrama Prakalpa marg (Heritage Corridor) in the holy coastal town. The graffiti also contained the name of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and some unverified phone numbers. Speaking to media persons, Pinak Mishra, DIG-Cum- Superintendent of Police, Puri said that efforts are on to identify and nab the accused person. "It was found that some objectionable posts have been written regarding the Jagannath Temple. We have taken cognisance of this incident. Our special team has already started an investigation to ascertain when and who wrote this. We have been taking the issue seriously as it is related to the security of Jagannath Temple," said Puri SP. Mishra also stated that police have been examining the CCTV footage of the temple and surrounding areas to identify the accused person. He also informed the media persons that the police team investigating the issue has already got some clues on the matter. The Puri SP noted that everything will be cleared on the issue after the identification and apprehension of the accused person. The police suspect that the graffiti was written on Tuesday night. Meanwhile, some locals claimed that a mentally unstable person was spotted earlier scribbling random matters in the locality during the past couple of days. It is pertinent to mention that pilgrims, senior servitors and locals had raised serious objections last month over security lapses at the Puri Jagannath Temple after some unknown persons were seen entering the 12th-century shrine, scaling the Meghanada Pacheri, the outer boundary wall of the temple, during the Rath Yatra festival.
