Mission Vidyashakti to boost learning among middle school students
Hubballi: A new education initiative titled 'Mission Vidyashakti' will soon be launched in Dharwad district to enhance academic outcomes for students in classes 6 to 8. Following the success of 'Mission Vidyakashi' for SSLC students, this scheme aims to improve learning quality and push the district into the top 10 in statewide rankings over the next two to three years.
The district administration launched the 'Mission Vidyakashi' programme last year. Despite not getting the expected results in the examination, the district secured 18th position, moving up four places from the previous time. It was limited to only 10th class students. However, keeping in mind the students of 6th, 7th, and 8th classes, the 'Mission Vidyashakti' scheme was formulated in collaboration with IIT and IIIT.
Under this scheme, students are taught online using smart classes in schools.
SM Hudedamani, deputy project coordinator Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan at the DDPI office, said that under this scheme, subjects like Mathematics, Science, and English, which are difficult for students and which most students fail in the exams, will be taught. The difficult points will be taught in an easy, simple, and varied manner so that the students can understand them.

He said that the scheme will be formulated so that there will be no disruption in the daily classes. In collaboration with IIT, IIIT Karnataka-Hyderabad, online classes will be conducted by subject experts for 1 hour in the afternoon, three days a week. Students can interact online about the subjects they do not know and get answers from experts,'' said Hudedmani.
DDPI Shankmukhaswamy Keladimath said that the first phase of the meeting was held under the chairmanship of the deputy commissioner Divya Prabhu regarding the launch of the 'Mission Vidyashakti'.
Another meeting will be held soon to discuss the implementation of the scheme. The scheme was formulated with a view to cover the next two to three years to ensure that students achieve good results in examinations.
Divya Prabhu, deputy commissioner, told TOI that a meeting was already held with officials of the school education department to formulate the scheme. Its main objective is for students to score good results in the examination.The difficult points for students in Mathematics, Science, and English were already identified, and the syllabus was prepared by subject experts. Students will be taught online in smart classes by skilled education experts from IITs and IIITs.
One teacher with computer experience in each school will be given the responsibility of managing it. They will be trained by June 15. The plan is to start the scheme in the last week of June, she informed.

The Consortium of Medical, Engineering, and Dental Colleges of Karnataka has released COMEDK Result 2025 scorecard on June 7, 2025. Candidates who have appeared for the common entrance test can check the results through the official website of COMEDK at The Undergraduate Entrance Test (UGET–2025) was held on May 10 and May 25, 2025, in a Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode. The exam was held in three sessions: the morning session from 8.30 AM to 11.30 AM, the afternoon session from 1 PM to 4 PM, and the evening session from 5.30 PM to 8.30 PM. There were 180 questions in total. Of these, 60 questions each were asked from Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. The eligibility criteria for counselling process is that candidate should have passed the 2nd PUC / 12th Standard examination with English as one of the Languages and obtained a minimum of 45% of marks in aggregate in Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects along with Chemistry / Bio-Technology /Biology / Electronics / Computer Science (40% for SC, ST and OBC candidates of Karnataka State only). Oldest engg school in country to conduct open house for aspirants
Chennai: Survey School, the oldest engineering school established outside Europe, in Madras in 1794 to produce trained personnel in surveying for British India, has turned into a premier College of Engineering (CEG), Guindy. It took British engineers, their surveyors, ameens, and draftsmen 50 years to complete the first survey of India in 1852. With satellite images and modern equipment, the same can be completed within a year with much better accuracy today. It all started with survey engineering. Now, the college is producing top-notch engineers in multiple disciplines. The department of civil engineering, one of the first departments to be established in the college roughly 166 years ago, has become one of the premier departments of the discipline. "Our department will host a first-ever open house on Monday to showcase innovations, research outcomes, and project demonstrations by students and faculty members," said S Kanmani, head, department of civil engineering, CEG. It is open to industry professionals, researchers, alumni, school children, and the public to see cutting-edge laboratories, interact with researchers, and witness live demonstrations. "The event will also have interactive exhibits, student-led models, and solutions to real-world infrastructure and sustainability challenges," she added. This exercise is being conducted to promote its UG and PG programmes. The department is offering BE civil engineering in Tamil and English and BE in geo-informatics. It also offers 11 PG courses. The students trained in live projects are working for various govt departments and agencies, including NASA and ISRO. "Three students from the BE geo-informatics course – Latha Malar Baskaran, Suresh Vannan, and G G Ponnurangam are working in NASA and its Jet Propulsion Laboratory as scientists. One of them was involved in the project that brought Astronaut Sunita Williams," said R Vidhya, director of Institute of Remote Sensing, another centre of the civil engineering department. "All faculty members in the civil engineering department are experts in their domains. They do research and consultancy for various govt agencies. So, UG and PG students joining this department can branch out to any section of civil engineering and work on live projects as well," said R Saravanan, director, Centre for Water Resources, also part of the civil engineering department at CEG. "Any building structure-related issue, be it Mugalivakkam or Tirvottiyur, our faculty members are part of the expert team. Due to these consultancy services, we are generating 80% of consultancy revenue for Anna University," said professor K P Jaya, head, structural engineering division, department of civil engineering. "It's one of the largest departments and occupies 60% of the total area in the CEG," she added. About 50% of total students are placed in campus placements, while 30% opt to write competitive exams. "The remaining 20% of students are interested in pursuing higher studies," Kanmani said. Some of the PG courses, such as structural engineering, have 100% placements. "ME in soil mechanics and foundation engineering course started at CEG in 1958, much before the IITs," said professor M Muttharam from the soil mechanics and foundation division.

Megalithic era pottery unearthed at village farm in Haveri
Haveri: A research team led by MR Shadaksharayya, a former professor from Karnatak University's history and archaeological department in Dharwad, unearthed Megalithic artefacts in Balambeed village, Hirekerur taluk, Haveri district. The discoveries, found on Mallikarjun Jogihalli's land, include 3000 BC pottery fragments and ancient materials merely six inches beneath the surface. Some findings suggest links to the Palaeolithic era. The research group, comprising historians Iranna Pattar, Nagarajappa MS, and MM Akki, located this archaeological site and gathered historical evidence from the agricultural land. Their findings include fossils of black-and-red pottery, characteristic of the Palaeolithic and Megalithic periods. The pottery collection features carinated vessels, pedestal bowls, spouted dishes, and distinctive conical lids with top loops. The Indian Megalithic culture primarily corresponds to the Iron Age (1500 BC–500 BC), with some sites showing Chalcolithic-Megalithic characteristics. The Palaeolithic period dates to 3000 BC. "The owner of the land came upon pottery while they were digging at least 18 inches. Not only this, many different types of pottery pieces were found in different spots at the farmland, and these are like those we found earlier in Hallur in Hirekerur taluk, Maski, Yallur village in Harapanahalli taluk. Some bone pieces were also found at the same spot," informed Prof Shadaksharayya. He indicated that these shallow-depth discoveries suggest the presence of substantial Stone Age burial grounds. Initial evidence points towards significant historical value requiring additional research. Former Archaeological Survey of India authority Narashimhaiah previously identified Stone Age implements in the region. "Villages were common among the Megalithic people. Megalithic people cultivated rice, wheat, ragi, and domesticated animals like donkeys and buffalo. Different types of pottery, including high-quality red and black pottery, are associated with the Megalithic culture, so these fossils are better leads to further studies," Shadaksharayya stated. "We preserved the fossils that were found in the farmland. We also requested the landowner not to harm such ancient pieces because they are valuable for study, and they also agreed to this," shared MM Akki, another member of this team.
