Motorcyclist dies in five-vehicle collision on North-South Expressway
JOHOR BARU, April 28 — A man was killed while another was injured in an accident involving five vehicles at Kilometre 1.6 of the North-South Expressway heading to the city centre here this morning.
Johor Baru South (JPS) police deputy chief Supt Azrul Hisham Mohd Shaffei said the incident is believed to have taken place when the victim, 23, the rider of a Honda Wave motorcycle from Kemas who was headed to Johor Baru, lost control of his motorcycle at about 6.25 am today.
He stated that upon reaching the scene, the victim lost control of the motorcycle and skidded, falling onto the right lane.
'Then, a 33-year-old local man riding a Yamaha Xmax motorcycle and the driver of a Toyota Vios stopped their vehicles to help the victim, but the Toyota Vios was rear-ended by a Honda City.
'However, suddenly a Subaru Impreza, driven by a Singaporean man, on the right lane was unable to avoid and hit the victim who was lying on the road, and also collided with the Yamaha XMax motorcycle rider, as well as the Toyota Vios and Honda City cars,' he said in a statement today.
Azrul Hisham said the victim was pronounced dead at the scene, whereas the Yamaha XMax rider suffered a broken right leg and is receiving treatment in the Sultanah Aminah Hospital here.
He said that in the incident, all the car drivers involved did not suffer serious injuries.
'The case is being investigated under conducted under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. At the same time, we urge members of the public who witnessed the incident to come forward to the JBS Traffic Police station or contact the investigating officer Inspector Mohd Zulpaka Bambo at 014-8861791,' he added. — Bernama

KTMB blames cable theft for train delays up north, plans RM12.8 million prevention upgrade

KTMB in a statement said among the affected locations were the Tapah Road - Sungkai (KM250.5) route with approximately 200 metres of cable stolen, Kamunting - Bukit Merah - Bagan Serai (KM87.25) with 110 metres stolen, and Simpang Ampat - Bukit Mertajam (KM15.5) with 40 metres affected. Advertisement The incident disrupted train operations, causing significant delays of between 80 and 115 minutes involving the following services; EP9172 (KL Sentral - Butterworth), EG9321 (Butterworth - Segamat), EX9107 (Butterworth - KL Sentral), EX9207 (Padang Besar - KL Sentral), and EG9420 (Segamat - Padang Besar). In addition, the Northern KTM Komuter service on the Ipoh - Butterworth - Ipoh route was also affected, with average delays of 30 minutes. KTMB said early notifications of the disruptions were sent to passengers via SMS and KTMB's official social media platforms. KTMB chief operating officer Mohd Zain Mat Taha in the same statement said 45 cases of cable theft have been recorded in the northern sector from January to May this year. 'This type of theft amounts to sabotage of railway infrastructure and could threaten the safety of hundreds of passengers while also crippling public transportation,' he said. As a mitigation measure, KTMB announced a plan to upgrade its signalling network, involving an estimated cost of RM12.8 million annually over the next three years, with a focus on hotspot areas. Among the planned improvements are installing manhole covers with special locking mechanisms at 21 locations, enhancing surveillance and prevention infrastructure including CCTV cameras and drones, and installing anti-climb security fencing. Additionally, he said monitoring and patrols by KTMB Auxiliary Police with cooperation from the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) would be intensified in hotspot areas to curb theft. 'We (KTMB) would like to call for the public's cooperation to report any suspicious activity to the authorities in order to combat such crime. 'We also apologise for any inconvenience experienced by passengers and remain committed to ensuring train service safety and reliability in the interest of the people and the country,' he added. Cops to remand bus driver in Gerik crash after hospital discharge

Cops, JPJ on the ball over road violations

A total of 1,858 police personnel will be deployed to locations that are expected to experience traffic congestion on highways and federal, state and municipal roads, said Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT). The department was committed to ensuring the public can celebrate in a safe and peaceful environment,' its director Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri said in a statement yesterday, 'Road users are advised to stay informed on the latest traffic updates via JSPT's official social media channels, which will help them plan their travel effectively,' he said, according to Bernama. Mohd Yusri urged road users to comply with traffic regulations, reminding them not to queue jump, misuse emergency lanes and obstruct traffic flows. Op Lancar will end on Monday. Meanwhile, more than 2,000 Road Transport Department enforcement officers have also been deployed nationwide for an operation which focuses on motorcyclists failing to comply with regulations. JPJ senior enforcement director Muhammad Kifli Ma Hassan said in Kota Baru that over the past two years, 1,132,140 notices were issued to motorcyclists, with 848,885 in 2024 and 283,255 as of May this year. He said the three main offences identified were not having a driving licence (301,774 cases), expired motor vehicle licence (251,886) and no insurance (233,819). Muhammad Kifli also said JPJ was offering a special flat rate compound of RM150 for three types of summonses, adding that the offer would end on June 30. The summonses covered are AwAS summonses (Summons 53A) issued from October 2018 onwards, Notice 114 (Interview Summons) issued in 2024 and earlier, and Notice 115/JPJ (P23) – Request for Driver Details – issued in 2024 and earlier. In Kuala Terengganu, JPJ issued 746 summonses for various offences over the first two days of the operation. Its director Zamri Samion said the summonses were issued following inspections on 6,006 vehicles, which included lorries, buses, motorcycles and cars. 'We also seized 25 vehicles including a lorry with serious technical issues involving its tyres,' Zamri said on Thursday night. 'We are targeting a 25% reduction in accidents and a 10% drop in fatalities during this operation,' he said, adding that the crackdown would end on Tuesday.
