AI Is Already Crushing the News Industry

When tech companies first rolled out generative-AI products, some critics immediately feared a media collapse. Every bit of writing, imagery, and video became suspect. But for news publishers and journalists, another calamity was on the horizon.
Chatbots have proved adept at keeping users locked into conversations. They do so by answering every question, often through summarizing articles from news publishers. Suddenly, fewer people are traveling outside the generative-AI sites—a development that poses an existential threat to the media, and to the livelihood of journalists everywhere.
According to one comprehensive study, Google's AI Overviews—a feature that summarizes web pages above the site's usual search results—has already reduced traffic to outside websites by more than 34 percent. The CEO of DotDash Meredith, which publishes People, Better Homes & Gardens, and Food & Wine, recently said the company is preparing for a possible 'Google Zero' scenario. Some have speculated that traffic drops resulting from chatbots were part of the reason outlets such as Business Insider and the Daily Dot have recently had layoffs. ' Business Insider was built for an internet that doesn't exist anymore,' one former staffer recently told the media reporter Oliver Darcy.
Not all publishers are at equal risk: Those that primarily rely on general-interest readers who come in from search engines and social media may be in worse shape than specialized publishers with dedicated subscribers. Yet no one is totally safe. Released in May 2024, AI Overviews joins ChatGPT, Claude, Grok, Perplexity, and other AI-powered products that, combined, have replaced search for more than 25 percent of Americans, according to one study. Companies train chatbots on huge amounts of stolen books and articles, as my previous reporting has shown, and scrape news articles to generate responses with up-to-date information. Large language models also train on copious materials in the public domain—but much of what is most useful to these models, particularly as users seek real-time information from chatbots, is news that exists behind a paywall. Publishers are creating the value, but AI companies are intercepting their audiences, subscription fees, and ad revenue.
I asked Anthropic, xAI, Perplexity, Google, and OpenAI about this problem. Anthropic and xAI did not respond. Perplexity did not directly comment on the issue. Google argued that it was sending 'higher-quality' traffic to publisher websites, meaning that users purportedly spend more time on the sites once they click over, but declined to offer any data in support of this claim. OpenAI referred me to an article showing that ChatGPT is sending more traffic to websites overall than it did previously, but the raw numbers are fairly modest. The BBC, for example, reportedly received 118,000 visits from ChatGPT in April, but that's practically nothing relative to the hundreds of millions of visitors it receives each month. The article also shows that traffic from ChatGPT has in fact declined for some publishers.
Over the past few months, I've spoken with several news publishers, all of whom see AI as a near-term existential threat to their business. Rich Caccappolo, the vice chair of media at the company that publishes the Daily Mail —the U.K.'s largest newspaper by circulation—told me that all publishers 'can see that Overviews are going to unravel the traffic that they get from search, undermining a key foundational pillar of the digital-revenue model.' AI companies have claimed that chatbots will continue to send readers to news publishers, but have not cited evidence to support this claim. I asked Caccappolo if he thought AI-generated answers could put his company out of business. 'That is absolutely the fear,' he told me. 'And my concern is it's not going to happen in three or five years—I joke it's going to happen next Tuesday.'
Book publishers, especially those of nonfiction and textbooks, also told me they anticipate a massive decrease in sales, as chatbots can both summarize their books and give detailed explanations of their contents. Publishers have tried to fight back, but my conversations revealed how much the deck is stacked against them. The world is changing fast, perhaps irrevocably. The institutions that comprise our country's free press are fighting for their survival.
Publishers have been responding in two ways. First: legal action. At least 12 lawsuits involving more than 20 publishers have been filed against AI companies. Their outcomes are far from certain, and the cases might be decided only after irreparable damage has been done.
The second response is to make deals with AI companies, allowing their products to summarize articles or train on editorial content. Some publishers, such as The Atlantic, are pursuing both strategies (the company has a corporate partnership with OpenAI and is suing Cohere). At least 72 licensing deals have been made between publishers and AI companies in the past two years. But figuring out how to approach these deals is no easy task. Caccappolo told me he has 'felt a tremendous imbalance at the negotiating table'—a sentiment shared by others I spoke with. One problem is that there is no standard price for training an LLM on a book or an article. The AI companies know what kinds of content they want, and having already demonstrated an ability and a willingness to take it without paying, they have extraordinary leverage when it comes to negotiating. I've learned that books have sometimes been licensed for only a couple hundred dollars each, and that a publisher that asks too much may be turned down, only for tech companies to take their material anyway.

Another issue is that different content appears to have different value for different LLMs. The digital-media company Ziff Davis has studied web-based AI training data sets and observed that content from 'high-authority' sources, such as major newspapers and magazines, appears more desirable to AI companies than blog and social-media posts. (Ziff Davis is suing OpenAI for training on its articles without paying a licensing fee.) Researchers at Microsoft have also written publicly about 'the importance of high-quality data' and have suggested that textbook-style content may be particularly desirable.
But beyond a few specific studies like these, there is little insight into what kind of content most improves an LLM, leaving a lot of unanswered questions. Are biographies more or less important than histories? Does high-quality fiction matter? Are old books worth anything? Amy Brand, the director and publisher of the MIT Press, told me that 'a solution that promises to help determine the fair value of specific human-authored content within the active marketplace for LLM training data would be hugely beneficial.'
A publisher's negotiating power is also limited by the degree to which it can stop an AI company from using its work without consent. There's no surefire way to keep AI companies from scraping news websites; even the Robots Exclusion Protocol, the standard opt-out method available to news publishers, is easily circumvented. Because AI companies generally keep their training data a secret, and because there is no easy way for publishers to check which chatbots are summarizing their articles, publishers have difficulty figuring out which AI companies they might sue or try to strike a deal with. Some experts, such as Tim O'Reilly, have suggested that laws should require the disclosure of copyrighted training data, but no existing legislation requires companies to reveal specific authors or publishers that have been used for AI training material.
Of course, all of this raises a question. AI companies seem to have taken publishers' content already. Why would they pay for it now, especially because some of these companies have argued in court that training LLMs on copyrighted books and articles is fair use?
Perhaps the deals are simply hedges against an unfavorable ruling in court. If AI companies are prevented from training on copyrighted work for free, then organizations that have existing deals with publishers might be ahead of their competition. Publisher deals are also a means of settling without litigation—which may be a more desirable path for publishers who are risk-averse or otherwise uncertain. But the legal scholar James Grimmelmann told me that AI companies could also respond to complaints like Ziff Davis's by arguing that the deals involve more than training on a publisher's content: They may also include access to cleaner versions of articles, ongoing access to a daily or real-time feed, or a release from liability for their chatbot's plagiarism. Tech companies could argue that the money exchanged in these deals is exclusively for the nonlicensing elements, so they aren't paying for training material. It's worth noting that tech companies almost always refer to these deals as partnerships, not licensing deals, likely for this reason.
Regardless, the modest income from these arrangements is not going to save publishers: Even a good deal, one publisher told me, won't come anywhere near recouping the revenue lost from decreased readership. Publishers that can figure out how to survive the generative-AI assault may need to invent different business models and find new streams of revenue. There may be viable strategies, but none of the publishers I spoke with has a clear idea of what they are.
Publishers have become accustomed to technological threats over the past two decades, perhaps most notably the loss of ad revenue to Facebook and Google, a company that was recently found to have an illegal monopoly in online advertising (though the company has said it will appeal the ruling). But the rise of generative AI may spell doom for the Fourth Estate: With AI, the tech industry even deprives publishers of an audience.
In the event of publisher mass extinction, some journalists will be able to endure. The so-called creator economy shows that it's possible to provide high-quality news and information through Substack, YouTube, and even TikTok. But not all reporters can simply move to these platforms. Investigative journalism that exposes corruption and malfeasance by powerful people and companies comes with a serious risk of legal repercussions, and requires resources—such as time and money—that tend to be in short supply for freelancers.
If news publishers start going out of business, won't AI companies suffer too? Their chatbots need access to journalism to answer questions about the world. Doesn't the tech industry have an interest in the survival of newspapers and magazines?
In fact, there are signs that AI companies believe publishers are no longer needed. In December, at The New York Times ' DealBook Summit, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman was asked how writers should feel about their work being used for AI training. 'I think we do need a new deal, standard, protocol, whatever you want to call it, for how creators are going to get rewarded.' He described an 'opt-in' regime where an author could receive 'micropayments' when their name, likeness, and style were used. But this could not be further from OpenAI's current practice, in which products are already being used to imitate the styles of artists and writers, without compensation or even an effective opt-out.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai was also asked about writer compensation at the DealBook Summit. He suggested that a market solution would emerge, possibly one that wouldn't involve publishers in the long run. This is typical. As in other industries they've 'disrupted,' Silicon Valley moguls seem to perceive old, established institutions as middlemen to be removed for greater efficiency. Uber enticed drivers to work for it, crushed the traditional taxi industry, and now controls salaries, benefits, and workloads algorithmically. This has meant greater convenience for consumers, just as AI arguably does—but it has also proved ruinous for many people who were once able to earn a living wage from professional driving. Pichai seemed to envision a future that may have a similar consequence for journalists. 'There'll be a marketplace in the future, I think—there'll be creators who will create for AI,' he said. 'People will figure it out.'

What if you want a pocket-friendly Pixel foldable, though? Unfortunately, Google hasn't launched a Pixel Flip, and we don't expect one any time soon. That means Samsung and Motorola are the only globally available options if you want a foldable flip phone. That's a real shame, because I can think of several ways that Google could make the best flip phone on the market. So, here's what I'd like to see on this fictional (for now?) Pixel Flip. Now Playing on the cover screen AssembleDebug / Android Authority One of my favorite Pixel features is Now Playing, as Google uses on-device machine learning to identify songs playing around you. It then displays the artist and track name on your lock screen for your convenience. Honestly, it still blows me away after all these years. This feature seems well-suited to a flip phone's cover screen, as these info snippets are short enough for the outer display's lock screen. Google could even implement album art like it recently did with Now Playing on its conventional phones. 2. Single Take on a Pixel Flip Hadlee Simons / Android Authority I praised the Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Samsung's Single Take mode several years ago as a great way to take photos of my cat (when she looked at the damn camera). All I had to do was place the half-opened Flip on a flat surface, start Single Take with my cat in the frame, and the phone would automatically take shots and videos for up to 10 seconds. I didn't need to hold the phone, either, and could include myself in the photos. How cool is that? I would love it if Google embraced this hands-free approach with a Pixel Flip phone. The company already offers Top Shot functionality for its cameras, capturing a short video and letting you save frames as HDR pictures. It even had a Photobooth feature on older Pixels, which automatically captured photos by detecting smiles, open eyes, and kisses. These two features make for a solid starting point. The Pixel 9 Pro Fold's Made You Look feature would also be a fun addition, as it captures the attention of pets and kids so you can get a better photo. But do you know what I'd like to see? Google's own attempt at Single Take. In fact, the ill-fated Google Clips camera previously offered similar functionality, as it automatically captured content. If the Pixel Flip ever sees the light of day, similar functionality would be right at home. 3. Astrophotography without a tripod Ryan Haines / Android Authority Google pioneered the astrophotography mode on smartphones back in 2019, and it's still one of my favorite features today. This mode requires a tripod on Pixel phones, but the Pixel Fold and Pixel 9 Pro Fold let you use Flex Mode instead. That means they effectively act as their own tripods. It makes sense for Google to bring this functionality to a theoretical Pixel Flip, too. And the ability to adjust the tilt angle makes for a more versatile experience if you want to adjust framing. Sure, companies like vivo let you take handheld astro photos, but can I tell you a secret? I still prefer Google's natural-looking astro shots. 4. Pixel Recorder on the cover display Hadlee Simons / Android Authority I'll miss the Recorder app when I eventually ditch my Pixel 7 Pro, as it's still the most powerful and convenient voice recorder app on the market. It's also an app that would be well-suited to the cover screen of a Pixel Flip, especially in my line of work. We've previously seen voice recorders on cover screens, but the Pixel Recorder offers on-device transcriptions, speaker labels, and seamless cloud backup functionality. You can even share these recordings and the accompanying transcripts via a web link. 5. A ton of tent mode features Ryan Haines / Android Authority Another cool thing you can do with foldable phones is put them in tent or desk mode. This effectively turns your phone into a bedside clock or a photo frame. I can think of a few ways that a theoretical Pixel Flip could leverage this posture. Google already offers a variety of software features on Pixel phones when connected to the Pixel Stand. This includes turning your phone into a Google Photos frame, a smart home controller, and a sunrise alarm. Imagine having these handy little features when using a Pixel Flip in tent mode? Google could even take things further by bringing the Pixel Weather app and the At A Glance widget to this mode. The Galaxy Z Flip 7 and Motorola Razr phones already offer Gemini on the cover screen, so Google wouldn't be breaking new ground by bringing it to a Pixel Flip cover display. However, the combo of Gemini Live and tent mode is intriguing, effectively turning your phone into a smart display. 6. Call screening without unfolding the phone Andy Walker / Android Authority Pixel 8a One of the biggest reasons to get a Pixel phone is the call screening feature. A virtual assistant answers an incoming call on your behalf, asks the caller why they're calling, and lets you hear (or read) their response. You can then choose to answer or reject the call, saving you from spammers and other inconvenient calls. This seems like a no-brainer for a future Pixel Flip phone, doesn't it? After all, the alternative is to unfold the phone and then tap the call screening option. Why do all that when you can just tap the outer screen? Google also offers other calling tricks, such as Hold for Me and Direct My Call, which also seem like obvious cover screen additions. 7. Using Google Wallet with a folded phone Edgar Cervantes / Android Authority One annoying issue I had with older Galaxy Z Flip phones was that I couldn't easily use Google Wallet to pay for stuff when the device was folded. Galaxy Z Flip phones eventually gained this functionality, but it requires downloading the MultiStar Good Lock module. This was particularly annoying as Samsung Pay worked fine out of the box. The ability to use Google Wallet with a folded phone seems like another no-brainer for a potential Pixel Flip. This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Dianne Michels, 81, who works at Trader Joe's in the Chicago area while developing a consulting and coaching business. She works to pay down her $70,000 in debt and fund the business, which she hopes will live on beyond her. This interview has been edited for length and clarity. Part of me never wants anybody to know how old I am because I don't want them to treat me like I'm an old person. The way people in retirement are treated is like they're no longer relevant. I started my career at a telephone company in Fargo when I was 19. I went to college but dropped out because I didn't want to be a nurse or a teacher, and it seemed like those were the only options for women back then. They trained us for six weeks as service representatives. I got married at 20, and we had two children. I supported my husband financially through his last two years of college, which was a common thing in those days. We didn't know what we were doing at such a young age, and we got divorced when I was 25. I had a series of relationships for the next 10 to 15 years, and I was engaged at one point, but I never remarried. The campaign manager asked me to work for her at a company that sold office products to physicians and dentists. I became their first female vice president. I worked there from 1973 until 1990, during which the company was acquired. In 1989, we relocated the marketing function to corporate in Minnesota, and I felt the real impact of working in a corporate setting. I left because I was not cut out to be a corporate female in a male-dominated organization. I internalized that people embrace responsibility at work as a gift rather than a burden to survive. If I see one more ad on TV showing elderly people saying, "I just wanted money so I can go out to dinner and see my grandchildren." There's so much more that is possible for us in terms of making a difference in the world. In 1990, I opened a career consulting business I did career consulting, but it didn't generate the income that it needed, so I closed it after two years. I relocated to Chicago in 1993 and went to college in the evenings and weekends while working in public relations. I fell into human resources, working as a consultant and then for a few HR organizations. I launched Serendipity HR, my human resources booking business, in 1998 and kept it until 2014. After that, I became the chief possibility officer at the YWCA Metropolitan Chicago. I left in 2018 to write a book. I have about $70,000 in debt I'm in debt in part because of my own lack of awareness about money. I have some personal debt of about $7,000, and the rest is credit card debt. Much of this was investing in my website, getting my book published, and supporting the startup costs of a business. I have arrangements with three of the four credit card companies, where I pay off the debt every month. I'm committed to being debt-free within 18 months. My Social Security allotment is around $2,500 monthly I took my Social Security early at 62 because I needed the money. I don't live in regret, but if I had to do it over, I'd certainly wait to take it, which would've given me about a third more. I was very short-term-financially oriented, instead of thinking beyond cash flow. I didn't know anything about financial security. I grew up in a family that was not focused on investing or financial literacy. We were more focused on getting a good job and keeping that job until retirement. I've been very irresponsible and reckless. I've always refused to be limited by financial circumstances I'm building a consulting and coaching business called Possibility Partners. The people who are going to pay me don't necessarily care whether their employees are making a difference — they care about the bottom line, growth, revenues, and productivity. I need to address their concerns, so I've shifted my business to focus more on creating standard operating practices and relationships, which will save money and increase productivity and retention. I just started a very aggressive sales program. I'm reaching out to people via email or text to ask for their help. While building my business, I'm working at Trader Joe's I needed cash flow to get out of debt and promote my business. In November, I dropped off my résumé at six Trader Joe's locations, went in for an interview at one of them, and two days later, I was working. The speed from résumé submission to hire was incredibly respectful. Working at Trader Joe's allows me to do the work and come home to focus on building my business. I do have a little snob in me — I wouldn't work for some other grocery stores. I briefly worked at Trader Joe's in 2013, so I knew it was a good fit for me. I work Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, so I have Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday to devote to my business. I work the cash register, stock shelves, and do food demos. There isn't much of a hierarchy that can create discrepancies in relationships or competition. The management team has been very accommodating, especially of my schedule. Family is at the top of my list Part of working on my own business is having the flexibility to babysit if my daughter wants to go on vacation. I'm planning to move closer to my daughter in Michigan next year. Trader Joe's is temporary work, and as soon as Possibility Partners is firmly established with robust client engagement and partners, I will give up my job to devote all my time to the business.

Harvey Mendelson is no stranger to reinvention. His career over the last six decades has pivoted from stockbrokering to real estate to car sales, with a few business launches along the way. Now, at 88, he's discovered a new passion: photography. Mendelson, who lives in California, owns and runs a photo gallery and digital printing business at a local live theater. He displays his work and makes fliers for the theater. It doesn't pay much, but he doesn't need much, he said. He has no debt, and he said that while he's not rich, the key to staying financially comfortable has been avoiding upscaling his lifestyle in retirement. "You retire at 65, and in three days, you're 80," Mendelson said. "You need to try to do things you're happy with, and for me, it's always been being independent." Mendelson is one of nearly 550,000 Americans 80 and older who continue to work in some capacity. In a few years, he'll join the 36,000 workers who are 90 or older. Over the past three months, Business Insider has spoken to over 100 members of the Silent Generation — born between 1928 and 1945 — who still work at least part-time out of desire or necessity. They've included bookkeepers, lawyers, forklift drivers, Home Depot employees, and more. Most say they enjoy work and value being active and social. Many are in good health, and about half of the workers Business Insider spoke to said the extra money is helpful but not necessary. Some said they've kept working despite health problems, including cancer, heart failure, and arthritis. (For many older Americans, health problems keep them out of the workforce.) This group is part of the fastest-growing segment of the labor force. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that Americans 75 and older are twice as likely to be in the workforce now as they were in the early 1990s. The trend is expected to continue growing as pensions weaken and Social Security is projected to be depleted by the mid-2030s. As people stay healthier longer and expectations shift around retirement, more people in their 80s may view work as favorable. Many experts on aging and retirement told BI that working longer helps older Americans stay sharp in older age. Teresa Ghilarducci, an economics professor at The New School and retirement security researcher, said, however, that working past 70 is often "not humane." Older people with poor working conditions can suffer shorter life expectancies and shame, she said. To better understand America's aging workforce, Business Insider analyzed the 2023 Census Bureau's American Community Survey, the most recent to date. This included a review of individual-level survey responses from Americans ages 80 and older assembled by the Minnesota Population Center's Integrated Public Use Microdata Series (IPUMS) program to determine how many worked, what jobs they held, and how their demographics and income compared to the broader population. Where the oldest generation of workers is employed The top jobs for workers 80 and older included managers, retail salespeople, lawyers, drivers, and real estate brokers, Business Insider's analysis found. The most popular industries included elementary and secondary schools, construction, and religious organizations. The median worker 80 and older earned $57,100 in 2023. About a third earned under $40,000, suggesting this subset works part-time or in lower-wage roles, perhaps to supplement Social Security. Meanwhile, about 26% earn over $100,000 yearly, while over 10% earn at least $200,000. For America's 17,000 managers over 80, construction is by far the most common industry, followed by financial investments, consulting services, mining, and scientific research. Nearly 2,400 people 80 and older work as managers in construction, nearly four times the next highest subfield. CEOs in their 80s and 90s are most likely to lead construction firms, executive offices, real estate, computer systems, and food services. "Real estate agents are entrepreneurs who can't just sit on the couch or be in the office all day," said Lawrence Yun, chief economist at the National Association of Realtors. He said the flexible hours make it a retirement-friendly job that also offers "the intangible benefits and inner satisfaction that come from helping others." At 93, Bobbie Beckham Sellers manages her rental properties part-time. The Tennessee resident is refurbishing a property she bought 30 years ago and plans to do the same for two other houses. She oversees about 30 properties. Her late husband encouraged her to start a realty company with $1,000, which she opened in 1972. It's now one of the largest in her county. After decades of running the business, she retired and asked her son to take over broker management about seven years ago. She said she has always been frugal. "I really enjoy continuing to work, and I enjoy every minute that I do," Sellers said. "Quitting my real estate career was one of the hardest things I've ever done in my whole life. It took me at least four years to not feel guilty about not going to that office." Within construction, workers 80 and older were most likely to be laborers, managers, carpenters, CEOs, plumbers, or electricians. Retail salespeople gravitated most to building material and supplies dealers, warehouse clubs, automobile dealers, and clothing retailers. Nearly a dozen retail workers told BI they were paid slightly above minimum wage in these roles and took the jobs because they couldn't find anything in their fields. Richard Jackson, an 81-year-old Marine veteran, started a construction company five decades ago that's still in operation. After some acquisitions, Jackson now oversees three companies with his children: CR Jackson, a grading and paving company; Satterfield Construction, which specializes in asphalt services; and N. W. White & Company, which operates about 400 dump trucks throughout South Carolina. With his son, Steven, and daughter, Elizabeth, Jackson's companies have over 1,000 employees, operate 11 asphalt plants, and pave in 36 of the state's 46 counties. Jackson works when he wants to, sometimes coming in later in the day for meetings and letting his children handle more of the logistical tasks. He maintains his commercial driver's license and has occasionally driven a dump truck. His son said he and Elizabeth don't consider themselves owners but rather "stewards" of what Jackson built. "We don't make strategic acquisitions or market moves without consulting with him and making sure that he sees what we see, and that he agrees with what we're agreeing with," Steven Jackson said. The typical 80-year-old worker Over 10% of all workers 80 and older live in California, followed by Florida and New York. Workers were slightly more likely to be born in the US than the general population. Working Americans 80 and older were more educated than the general population in that age group. Nearly 42% of the working cohort had a bachelor's degree or higher, compared to just under 27% of the whole population. People working late into their careers tended to be white and male. Nearly 60% were men, though men represent 40% of the total 80+ population. The percentage of workers 80 and older, compared to all Americans 80 and older, has ticked up over the last four decades. While 2.9% of people 80 and older worked in 1980, this has increased to nearly 4% in 2019 and 4.2% in 2023. For much of his life, Leonard Carter, who lives in rural South Carolina, worked at his family's textile byproducts company, buying cotton and mill waste from cotton mills and recycling them into new products. He supplied fiber fill for pillows for caskets and described selling 40,000-pound loads at 50 cents per pound. At 82, he now oversees operations — processing orders, arranging shipments, and calling clients. It beats watching TV all day, he said. Carter, who works about 20 hours a week, said he has enough to live comfortably well past 100, as he has a high-six-figure IRA and gets $2,500 monthly from Social Security. Still, between multiple marriages, rising costs, and some tougher years with the business, finances haven't always been secure. He goes on work trips to the Midwest, and he stays active in his community, attending Rotary Club meetings and volunteering at historic sites nearby. "It's a sense of purpose, and it's also a sense of knowing I'm doing something good, which is recycling stuff that would go to landfills." Working odd jobs for the fun of it A data analysis of people 80 and older by United For ALICE, part of United Way of Northern New Jersey, calculated that of the nearly 550,000 workers 80 and older, about 73% are above the ALICE threshold, the minimum income needed to afford basic living expenses. This suggests that most workers in this demographic are not desperate for additional income, though thousands still work to supplement their Social Security. Stephanie Hoopes, national director of United For ALICE, said that many seniors may take on part-time work for a little extra boost of financial security. And employers may need them. "There are parts of the country where they're struggling to get workers, such as in the retail and service space, and they may be quite interested in hiring seniors because they're maybe more dependable," she said. John Kasun, 86, has had a long and winding career. While working in engineering, he started selling archery equipment out of his basement. He hired six part-time workers and kept his full-time job. Kasun, who lives in Pennsylvania, also wrote for an outdoor magazine and worked for a railroad rehabilitation company. While working, he invested all his extra money and spent frugally, splurging every once in a while on items like an ATV. "For me, money is like having a goose that lays a golden egg every Monday; if you eat it on Sunday, you don't get an egg on Monday," Kasun said. "I don't want anything to happen to me that I can't handle financially, and I don't want any conditions to dictate to me what I have to do." Kasun now writes part-time for a magazine. He has about $1.5 million in liquid assets and receives about $80,000 in retirement income from Social Security and the railroad company. He doesn't consider himself retired, and after a heart attack last summer, he likes to keep busy by picking up random tasks for his community. "I'm a problem-solving guy, and anytime I see anything that I can get involved in or where I can be of help, I jump in," Kasun said. "I see opportunities all the time. It's almost like I wear special glasses.
