Cannes Film Festival BANS risqué outfits from annual ceremony after years of provocative red carpet displays as organisers issue new guidelines for 'expected behaviour'

Daily Mail12-05-2025
Good old fashioned decency is expected to cast a tall shadow over the 78th Cannes Film Festival when the annual ceremony gets underway on Tuesday evening.
Over recent years the star-studded extravaganza has arguably won more attention for the outfits worn by its celebrity guests than the roster of feature films being screened on the Croisette.
But new nudity rules, devised for 'the sake of decency,' will be implemented when French director Amélie Bonnin's Leave One Day opens the ceremony this week.
According to organisers, the austere move is an attempt to the stifle the celebrity trend for 'naked dresses' - namely provocative outfits that reveal considerably more than they conceal - on the red carpet.
'For decency reasons, nudity is prohibited on the red carpet, as well as any other area of the festival,' states a Cannes festival document.
'The festival welcoming teams will be obligated to prohibit red carpet access to anyone not respecting these rules.'
The surprise new policy features in a recent festival-goers charter - released with a series of outlines regarding expected public behaviour.
Guests are expected to converge on the Grand Auditorium Louis Lumière for some of the highest profile film screenings across a packed seven day schedule in Cannes.
It's understood that the iconic venue now adopts a more conservative dress code, with suits, dinner jackets and floor-length evening gowns generally favoured over headline grabbing ensembles.
Classic little black dresses, cocktail dresses, pant-suits, dressy tops and elegant sandals, 'with or without a heel', will also be permitted.
While the decision to implement a more stringent policy will be a first, it is not known if French TV broadcasters, wary of airing nudity, played a role in its enforcement.
Major red carpet events, including the Cannes Film Festival, are aired in France by France Télévisions
Recently attracting more models and influencers than actors and filmmakers, the annual ceremony has seen an increase in risque red carpet fashion statements.
In 2021, American supermodel Bella Hadid bared her cleavage in a plunging black gown while attending a screening of Tre Piani (Three Floors).
She pulled a similar stunt three years later, with guests at the 2024 gala left speechless after she attended the premiere of Donald Trump biopic The Apprentice completely braless beneath a sheer brown evening dress.
This year's ceremony will begin in the wake of Trump´s vow to enact tariffs on international films.
Cannes, where filmmakers, sales agents and journalists gather from around the world, is the Olympics of the big screen, with its own golden prize, the Palme d´Or, to give out at the end.
Filmmakers come from nearly every corner of the globe to showcase their films while dealmakers work through the night to sell finished films or packaged productions to various territories.
'You release a film into that Colosseum-like situation,' says Brazilian director Kleber Mendonça Filho, who´s returning to Cannes with 'The Secret Agent, a thriller set during Brazil´s dictatorship.
'You´ve got to really prepare for the whole experience because it´s quite intense - not very far from the feeling of approaching a roller coaster as you go up the steps at the Palais.'
Trump sent shock waves through Hollywood and the international film community when he announced on May 4 that all movies "produced in Foreign Lands" will face 100% tariffs.
The White House has said no final decisions have been made. Options being explored include federal incentives for U.S.-based productions, rather than tariffs. But the announcement was a reminder of how international tensions can destabilize even the oldest cultural institutions.
The Cannes Film Festival originally emerged in the World War II years, when the rise of fascism in Italy led to the founding of an alternative to the then-government controlled Venice Film Festival.
In the time since, Cannes´ resolute commitment to cinema has made it a beacon to filmmakers. Countless directors have come to make their name.
This year is no different, though some of the first-time filmmakers at Cannes are already particularly well-known. Stewart (The Chronology of Water), Scarlett Johansson (Eleanor the Great) and Harris Dickinson (Urchin) will all be unveiling their feature directorial debuts in Cannes´ Un Certain Regard sidebar section.
Many Cannes veterans will be back, too, including Tom Cruise (Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning), Robert De Niro - who´s to receive an honorary Palme d´Or 49 years after Taxi Driver premiered in Cannes - and Quentin Tarantino, to pay tribute to low-budget Western director George Sherman.

We won't be too harsh on William the Conqueror, BBC actor tells Macron

Emmanuel Macron has been told that the forthcoming BBC series about William the Conqueror will be 'fair in depicting both sides of the story'. The series, King and Conqueror, will tell the story of the Norman conquest of 1066, during which William overthrew Harold Godwinson, the Anglo-Saxon ruler. James Norton, who stars as the ill-fated King Harold, has personally promised the French president that the series will not be unduly critical of the Normans. Some histories of the conquest have argued that William and his descendants imposed an oppressive 'Norman yoke' on the native and more freedom-loving Saxons. Norton spoke to Mr Macron during a ceremony at the British Museum to celebrate the loan agreement for the Bayeux Tapestry, which will come to the UK next year. Speaking about the meeting, he said: 'I was very quick to reassure him that we had told the French story, the Norman story, with as little bias as possible. There are a lot of stories about William post the Battle of Hastings itself, and how he acted pretty monstrously, but there's no doubt that he had his own domestic space, his relationship with Matilda and his son. 'We didn't want one hero or one villain, we wanted the audience to be split and we wanted people to sit on the sofa and have someone on Team Harold and someone on Team William. I said to Macron: 'I promise you that we have been fair in depicting both sides of the story'.' Norton has credited the sympathetic portrayal of William to his co-star, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who portrays the victorious Duke of Normandy. Colour-blind casting The Telegraph previously revealed that BBC production has followed a policy of colour-blind casting, and Anglo-Saxons will be played by a diverse set of actors. The corporation selected non-white stars to portray Tudor courtiers in another historical drama, Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light. The release of King and Conqueror coincides with renewed interest in the Norman conquest, following the news – first revealed by The Telegraph – that the Bayeux Tapestry would be returning to England for the first time in 900 years. The medieval artwork, believed to have been created by English embroiderers, will move to the British Museum while the Bayeux Museum undergoes refurbishment. In return, France will receive Anglo-Saxon treasure from the Sutton Hoo ship burial, along with the 12th century Lewis chessmen.

My best friend's hen was cancelled thanks to you... Elton John and David Walliams! Stars party in Cannes, while bride-to-be's special event was axed

A woman has claimed her best friend's hen do was cancelled due to Elton John and David Walliams ' 'semi-private event' at a restaurant in Cannes. The two stars shared snaps of themselves having lunch at the expensive La Guérite restaurant and beach club, on the Île Ste-Marguerite, south of Cannes. But their attendance allegedly meant a group of women who booked a table at the venue in May to celebrate their friend's upcoming wedding had their reservation axed last minute. Taking a swipe at the stars on Instagram, a friend of the bride wrote: 'Hope you enjoyed La Guérite! Our reservation was cancelled for my best friend's hen do due to your "semi-private event".' She added: 'We booked our table in May didn't think it would be cancelled with 24 hours' notice.' Her claim was backed up by another woman, who wrote: 'So bad isn't it! We flew here especially for this for our friend's hen.' It is not known whether Sir Elton or Walliams were aware of any bookings being cancelled on the day of their event. The women's comments were penned under a post shared by Walliams, The Telegraph first reported, in which he pictured himself sitting next to his friend Sir Elton at the restaurant. Comedian Walliams, 53, also shared a video of him dancing - in which he couldn't contain his excitement when Whitney Houston's I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me) was played, much to the amusement of pop icon Sir Elton. Walliams stood at the table and swayed animatedly to the music, before moving to dance with his hands on the back of Sir Elton's chair. The Crocodile Rock legend, who looked smart in a summer shirt, appeared in great spirits and sang along before collapsing into fits of giggles. Walliams, shielding his eyes behind shades, was loving every moment and had a huge grin on his face as the other diners laughed along. As well as Elton, David was joined by Heartstopper stars Kit Connor, 21, Joe Locke, 21, and Tobie Donovan, 23, sharing snaps as they soaked up the sun together. He shared the clip to X and captioned it: 'Summer holiday'. Sir Elton attended the same restaurant with his husband David Furnish in July. The singer is believed to own a £15million villa - known as the Yellow Palace - which sits along the coast from Cannes.
