Popular Love Song Revealed As Creepy Stalker Anthem
Let me set the scene for you. It's 2005, wide belts, layered tanks, and bohemian jewelry are in. And no matter how much you tried to avoid it, you couldn't turn on the radio, TRL, or walk into a Wet Seal without hearing this one song: "You're Beautiful" by James Blunt.
The hit song is the third single from James's debut album Back to Bedlam. It was nominated for three Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.
But I wasn't exaggerating about its popularity. Along with topping charts and music lists, "You're Beautiful" was being played everywhere! In fact, James eventually apologized for how much people were being exposed to it — in 2014, James said the song 'was force-fed down people's throats' and that 'it became annoying.'
Well, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the single's worldwide release, James thanked fans for what they helped the song become. He also shared the meaning behind those notable lyrics.
"20 years ago today, I released a song that bought me this house," James said in a video post on X (better known as Twitter).
"Whoever thought a song about being high as a kite on drugs, stalking someone else's girlfriend would resonate quite so much? Thank you. You guys are beautiful."
STALKING?! What in the world?! Sir, I thought this was a song about having an instant spark with a stranger, and not being able to get them out of your head, after realizing you'll probably never run into them again.
So, I immediately headed to Google to see if I missed something in the lyrics. "You're Beautiful" starts like this:
Hmm...now that last line — "I've got a plan" — is sounding a little suspicious, but I promise, the lyrics didn't turn creepy or anything after that. After the chorus plays, the next few lines go as follows:
Yeah, I was a young teen when this song came out, and I can guarantee you, stalking was the last thing I thought this was about. But the more you know...right?
