Dubai: Chinese ambassador wears kandura during talks with Sheikh Maktoum

Khaleej Times20-05-2025

China's ambassador to the UAE decided to add a traditional touch to a recent business meeting to discuss strengthening ties and boosting mutual cooperation.
During the sitting with Sheikh Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister & Minister of Finance, the Chinese envoy to the country Zhang Yiming showed up wearing a traditional Emirati kandura.
Sheikh Maktoum shared photos of him and Yiming on X and commented by saying that China is a key partner in shaping a sustainable developmental future.
"We remain committed to building bridges of collaboration that serve the interests of our peoples, our region, and the world," he added.
Donning kanduras
This was not the first time Yiming is seen sporting the traditional attire. Last year, he posted a photo of him wearing it during a majlis with Dr Anwar Gargash, the diplomatic adviser to UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
It was a great pleasure to meet my old friend Dr. Anwar Gargash @AnwarGargash at the majlis. Everyone was warm and friendly, making it an unforgettable day! pic.twitter.com/l3gFP97MVR

Other photos showed him in a previous occasion wearing the traditional dress. Take a look:
Im pleased to attend the family banquet hosted by Ahmed Salem Sudain, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Emirates Society for Parents' Care and Relief, and to celebrate Eid al-Adha with my Emirati brothers! Wishing for ever-stronger relations between China and the UAE! pic.twitter.com/056WX2BiRq

But he is not the only pubic figure who was seen donning the kandura.
In 2023, Spanish football great Andres Iniesta swapped his jersey for a kandura to mark the 52nd UAE National Day.
Images on Instagram also depicted the supremely talented former Barcelona wearing an Arabic Bisht coat, a black robe with an embroidered gold border that is a status garment among Arab men, much like the black-tie tuxedo worked on special occasions in the West.
Two-time Dubai tennis finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas also made a memorable entrance at the ATP Players' Party earlier this year, arriving on the red carpet wearing the traditional robe worn in the Middle East.

Bezalel Smotrich blocks Israeli and Palestinian banks from working together

Israel's Finance Minister has cancelled a waiver allowing Israeli banks to work with Palestinian counterparts in a move that could paralyse the Palestinian economy. It comes hours after the UK and other countries imposed sanctions on him and another hard-line minister. Bezalel Smotrich had threatened in May last year to cut the vital connection between Israel and Palestinian banks in the occupied West Bank in retaliation for the recognition of the State of Palestine by three European countries. A statement issued by the Israeli Finance Minister's office on Wednesday read: "Against the backdrop of the Palestinian Authority's delegitimisation campaign against the State of Israel internationally, Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich has instructed Accountant General CPA Yali Rothenberg to cancel the indemnity provided to correspondent banks dealing with banks operating in Palestinian Authority territories." The Palestinian financial and banking system is dependent on the regular renewal of the waiver. It protects Israeli banks from potential legal action relating to transactions with their Palestinian counterparts, for instance in relation to financing terrorism. The move comes after the UK, Canada, New Zealand and Norway announced sanctions on Mr Smotrich and Israeli Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir over links to "extremist violence and serious abuses of Palestinian human rights", the countries said in a joint statement. This is not the first time Mr Smotrich has sought to punish Palestinians for international condemnation of Israel's occupation and actions. After Norway, Ireland, Spain, Armenia and Slovenia announced their recognition of a Palestinian state last year, the minister announced Israel would recognise five illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, a territory he has repeatedly called for his country to annex. In July, G7 countries urged Israel to "take necessary action" to ensure the continuity of Palestinian financial systems. It came after US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen warned that "to cut Palestinian banks from Israeli counterparts would create a humanitarian crisis". The overwhelming majority of financial exchanges in the West Bank are in shekels, Israel's national currency, because the Palestinian Authority does not have a central bank under which it could print its own currency. But Israeli banks were continuing to work with Palestinian branches because of the waiver. The UN has warned that 'unilaterally cutting off Palestinian banks from the global banking system would be a violation of the fundamental principles of international law'. This pressure had until now pushed the Israeli government to continue agreeing to short extensions of the waiver, but far-right ministers such as Mr Smotrich and Mr Ben-Gvir have long objected.

Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif to visit UAE on June 12, meet Sheikh Mohamed

Pakistan PM Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif will visit the UAE on Thursday, June 12, along with a high-level delegation to meet senior UAE leadership. A spokesperson of Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the prime minister will be accompanied by senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar, the deputy prime minister and foreign minister, federal Ministers, and other senior officials. 'Prime minister Sharif will hold high-level meetings with the UAE leadership, including a bilateral meeting with the President of the UAE and Ruler of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. A wide range of bilateral, regional, and global issues of mutual interest and concern will be discussed during the high-level interactions,' said the spokesperson. This is Sharif's second visit to the UAE this year. He visited the UAE in February 2025. Sharif last week paid a two-day visit to Saudi Arabia to boost bilateral ties and praise the Kingdom's role in de-escalating tension with India in a recent military conflict. Prior to Saudi Arabia, Sharif visited four friendly countries - Turkiye, Iran, Azerbaijan and Tajikistan to acknowledge their support during Pakistan's conflict with India. 'The Prime Minister's visit will serve to further strengthen the longstanding brotherly relations between Pakistan and the UAE, deepen economic ties, and foster multifaceted collaboration. This visit is a manifestation of Pakistan's and UAE's shared commitment to bolstering the mutually beneficial strategic partnership, enhancing cooperation in existing areas of mutual interest, and exploring new avenues for further strengthening the bilateral cordial relations,' said the Pakistan Foreign Ministry's spokesperson.
