Guardiola hints at summer exit for Grealish after Club World Cup omission
PHILADELPHIA, June 17 (Reuters) - Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has suggested that Jack Grealish may need to consider leaving the club in the summer to secure more regular playing time, after the England international was omitted from the squad travelling to the United States for the revamped FIFA Club World Cup.
The 29-year-old attacking midfielder, signed from Aston Villa for £100 million in 2021, started just seven Premier League matches during the 2024-25 campaign. Speaking ahead of City's Group G opener against Morocco's Wydad Casablanca, Guardiola admitted that Grealish's future remains uncertain.
'We had a conversation between him and the club and decided it was best for him not to travel to the Club World Cup,' Guardiola told reporters in Philadelphia on Tuesday.
'Jack is an exceptional player. The only reason he didn't play last season was, of course, my decisions. Now, we've decided he needs to play. The club was honest, and he was honest.'
Guardiola emphasised Grealish's importance to the squad during City's treble-winning campaign in 2022-23, as well as his influence during his time at Aston Villa. However, he acknowledged that the past two seasons have seen the player struggle for consistency.
'He has incredible respect and love for the team,' Guardiola said. 'We decided it's best for him to stay in Manchester, find a place where he can feel like playing again, and rediscover the form he showed in the year of the treble or during his time at Villa. The fact is, over the last two seasons, he hasn't played enough, and he needs to get back to playing regularly, feeling that excitement of competing every three days.'
While Guardiola left the door open for Grealish to remain at the Etihad Stadium, he admitted that both the player and the club will use their time apart during the Club World Cup to reflect on his future.
'I don't know if his future will be in Manchester,' he said. 'We'll be away now, and we'll see what happens. For now, he's a Manchester City player, and if he has to come back, he will.'

June 18 - The San Jose Earthquakes have been put on the market by owner John Fisher, according to a Sportico report on Tuesday night, with Fisher apparently hiring an investment bank to help facilitate the sale. The Earthquakes, MLS and Moelis & Co., the investment bank, declined to comment. But Sportico reported the move was to be announced Wednesday. Nearly four years ago, Fisher -- who is worth $3 billion, according to Forbes -- hired Moelis to explore selling minority shares in the Earthquakes. Now he plans to sell a controlling interest in the team, per Sportico. Fisher, who also owns the MLB's Athletics, paid a $20 million expansion fee in 2007 for the Earthquakes. In January, Sportico ranked the franchise 20th in its MLS team valuations, at $600 million. The Earthquakes play in a soccer-specific stadium, PayPal Park, which is also home to the NWSL's Bay FC. Last year's attendance was the third-lowest in the league; and, despite one of the league's lowest revenue streams, the team's value increased due to the demographics of the Bay Area and its collection of billionaires. The Earthquakes -- currently eighth in the 15-team Western Conference after finishing last in 2024 -- aren't the only MLS franchise on the market. The Vancouver Whitecaps' majority owner hired Goldman Sachs last December to assist with the sale. Fisher also owns more than 95 percent of the MLB's Athletics, who are playing the first of an expected three seasons at Sutter Health Park, the home of the Triple-A Sacramento River Cats, before their new $1.75 billion stadium opens in Las Vegas. Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta is now being encouraged to consider a move for Nunez after finishing just behind the Reds in second this term. Former Liverpool striker Dean Saunders has made the suggestion after boldly claiming he could bag the Gunners 25 goals next season. Such a tally would require a marked improvement from Nunez, who only scored seven times across all competitions in his most recent campaign. However, the former Wolves and Wrexham manager said he believed Arsenal would be lucky to have him after describing their current transfer targets as "gambles". He added: "He's not hopeless and what surprises you about him is that he's got every finish in his locker. He can go around the keeper, he can shoot from range and he can score headers, but he does seem to find a way of missing sometimes." Liverpool are looking to sign a new striker this summer, with a move for Eintracht Frankfurt's Hugo Ekitike on the cards. With a club-record £116m deal for Florian Wirtz also in the works, it could lead to several outgoings to fund the new arrivals. Nunez is looking for a new challenge after starting just eight Premier League games under Arne Slot this season. He earned praise from his manager for his positive attitude in spite of the lack of minutes. Discussing Nunez's situation at the moment, Slot said: "I don't know exactly what is going to happen. One of the main strengths we had this season is that everybody accepted his role. "And his role sometimes could be to start every single game, hardly be taken off, sometimes be taken off.
