K-P vows furniture for all students

Express Tribune01-06-2025
In a significant move to bolster public education, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Khan Gandapur has announced that all students enrolled in government schools across the province will receive proper furniture during the next fiscal year.
The initiative is part of the province's ongoing "education emergency" campaign aimed at uplifting basic educational infrastructure.
Chairing a high-level meeting on Sunday to finalize the Annual Development Programme (ADP) for the upcoming financial year, the chief minister directed relevant authorities to ensure that no student in the public sector is left sitting on the floor due to a lack of furniture.
He assured that all necessary funds for this initiative would be made available on a priority basis. Emphasizing the provincial government's commitment to improving basic school facilities, Gandapur reiterated that functional washrooms, access to clean drinking water, and adequate classroom furniture are non-negotiable priorities.
In a broader push for quality education, the chief minister also announced the launch of a special program to enhance teaching standards in public schools. He directed that modern, skills-based training be made mandatory for all newly recruited teachers, adding that capacity-building for educators is essential for long-term educational reform.
The ADP planning meeting was attended by Advisor to the Chief Minister on Finance Muzammil Aslam, Chief Secretary Shahab Ali Shah, Additional Chief Secretary for Planning and Development Ikramullah Khan, and administrative secretaries of various departments.
Participants held detailed deliberations on development proposals submitted by departments including Education, Health, Irrigation, Water Supply, Planning, Communications, and Local Government. Each project was individually reviewed for inclusion in the new ADP.
Speaking to the attendees, Chief Minister Gandapur described the upcoming ADP as a "visionary document" that would guide the province's development agenda for the next four years.
He said the plan would incorporate input from elected representatives and prioritize projects based on the genuine needs of local communities.
He further stated that the bulk of next year's development budget would be dedicated to completing ongoing projects, particularly those with over 80 per cent of work already completed. Approximately 50 per cent of other existing projects are also expected to be finalized within the year.
"The new ADP will be realistic and rooted in public needs," Gandapur said. "We will not chase superficial progress at the expense of essential services. Taxpayers' money will be used wisely and transparently."
Declaring that "every constituency in the province is my constituency," the CM assured that development initiatives would be allocated without political bias, with a special focus on uplifting underdeveloped areas.

Bajaur, Mohmand elders reject operations

The second session of regional consultative Jirgas on law and order, initiated by Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Khan Gandapur, was held on Monday at the Chief Minister's House in Peshawar. The meeting saw active participation from elders and elected representatives of Bajaur and Mohmand districts. The high-level session was also attended by Advisor to the Chief Minister Barrister Muhammad Ali Saif, Senator Noorul Haq Qadri, the Chief Secretary, Inspector General of Police, as well as commissioners, deputy commissioners, and senior police officials. Participants held detailed deliberations on the worsening law and order situation and presented several key recommendations. Stressing their unwavering commitment to peace, they declared: "We want peace and call upon the government to ensure it. We are ready to fully cooperate. Terrorism is the enemy of all, and we stand united against it." The Jirga unanimously rejected proposals for military operations and displacement, deeming them unacceptable. Instead, they recommended the formation of a broad-based and empowered Jirga, comprising federal and provincial representatives, tribal elders, and other key stakeholders, to initiate meaningful dialogue with the Afghan government and people for long-term peace. Participants welcomed the initiative of local Jirgas, calling it a positive step and urged its expansion and effectiveness to benefit other conflict-affected regions. It may be recalled that following the All Parties Conference (APC) convened by Chief Minister last month, the provincial government has officially launched a series of regional Jirgas aimed at addressing the pressing issues of peace, security, and development in the merged tribal districts of the province. The first of these regional consultative Jirgas was held on Saturday at the Chief Minister's House in Peshawar. The gathering brought together a diverse array of participants from the Khyber and Orakzai districts, as well as from the tribal sub-divisions of Darra Adam Khel and Hassan Khel. In total, more than 150 tribal elders and community leaders were present, in addition to six members of the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Assembly, three members of the National Assembly, and one senator. Senior provincial officials, including Advisor to the Chief Minister on Information Barrister Muhammad Ali Saif, Chief Secretary Shahab Ali Shah, and Inspector General of Police Zulfiqar Hameed, also participated in the Jirga. They were joined by commissioners, deputy commissioners, and senior police officers from the concerned districts. In a unanimous declaration, the Jirga participants put forth key recommendations to guide the province's future strategy in the tribal belt.

KP launches ‘ILMpact' to promote literacy

PESHAWAR: The provincial government has launched a new initiative titled 'ILMpact' in collaboration with the United Kingdom's Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) to enrol out-of-school children and improve the quality of education in the province. The programme, being implemented through the British Council, was officially launched by Chief Minister Ali Amin Khan Gandapur. The launching ceremony was attended by Provincial Minister for Elementary and Secondary Education Faisal Khan Tarakai, British Council Country Director James Hampson, officials from the Elementary and Secondary Education Department, and representatives of partner organisations. ILMpact programme aims to benefit 80,000 out-of-school children across eight districts of the province — Battagram, Mansehra, Swabi, Buner, Shangla, Khyber, Mohmand, and Dera Ismail Khan. Under this initiative, comprehensive efforts will be made to enrol out-of-school children and to improve the standard of education. As part of the programme, master trainers will be prepared to deliver modern training to teachers, and capacity-building initiatives will be undertaken for Parent-Teacher Councils and School Management Committees in government schools. The programme places particular emphasis on the education of girls, underprivileged and special children and those from minority communities. Additionally, awareness campaigns will be launched to promote education, especially girls' education in the selected districts. Addressing the ceremony, Chief Minister Ali Amin Khan Gandapur expressed his gratitude to all partner organisations for making the ILMpact programme a reality. He stated, 'Our government's mission is not just to provide education but to ensure the provision of quality education. Highlighting his government's commitment to education, the Chief Minister noted that an education emergency has been declared in the province, with a substantial increase in the budget for elementary and secondary education. 'This year, 21 percent of the total provincial budget has been earmarked for elementary and secondary education,' he said. 'Plans are also under way to provide free textbooks, stationery, and school bags to students in government schools. In parallel, attention is being given to improving the quality of education through teacher training, and the recruitment of 18,000 new teachers on merit is currently in progress', he concluded.
