Operation Kalnemi: Over 300 fake ‘babas' nabbed in Uttarakhand

Hans Indiaa day ago
Haldwani: In a sweeping crackdown on imposters exploiting religious sentiments, Uttarakhand Police on Tuesday has taken action against more than 300 fake babas under Operation Kalnemi across the Kumaon division.
The initiative, launched under the directive of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, aims to weed out fraudulent spiritual figures misguiding the public in the name of faith.
Speaking to IANS, Inspector General (IG) Kumaon Riddhim Agarwal confirmed that the operation was conducted across all six districts of the Kumaon region, where over 300 individuals posing as saints, babas, or spiritual guides were identified. Action has been initiated through FIRs, challans, and preventive detentions.
'These individuals were exploiting people's faith through superstition, deceit, and false claims of divine powers,' Agarwal told IANS.
'They had no valid identity proof or documentation to support their credentials. During the campaign, suspects were taken into custody, their backgrounds verified, and necessary legal action was taken.'
Agarwal further added that all police stations and outposts across Kumaon have been instructed to remain vigilant and continue the crackdown against suspicious figures masquerading as spiritual leaders.
The operation is inspired by the mythological figure Kalnemi, a demon who appeared as a saint to mislead people. Drawing from this allegory, CM Pushkar Singh Dhami launched Operation Kalnemi on July 10, calling it a necessary move to protect the image of Sanatan Dharma.
'Just as the demon Kalnemi used disguise to deceive, many such 'Kalnemis' exist in today's society who are misusing religion to commit crimes,' CM Dhami had said while launching the initiative.
'This is an effort to protect people's faith and ensure that only true spiritual guides lead our communities.'
The move comes at a time when Uttarakhand is witnessing increased religious activity due to the ongoing pilgrimage season. With sacred towns like Haridwar, Rishikesh, and Kedarnath drawing large crowds, the government aims to ensure the safety and sanctity of these gatherings.
The campaign has received widespread support from across the political spectrum.
BJP national spokesperson Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi praised the move, emphasising the need to end religious exploitation.
'Conversion through money, deception, or coercion must be strictly monitored and curbed,' he said.
BJP MP Praveen Khandelwal echoed the sentiment, stating, 'With the rise in awareness about Sanatan Dharma, many fake babas are trying to take advantage. I commend CM Dhami for protecting the integrity of our saintly traditions.'
BJP leader Syed Shahnawaz Hussain also voiced his support.
'Many fake people are looting innocent believers with false promises and 'miracles.' This campaign will help unmask them,' he told.
Interestingly, even Opposition parties backed the initiative, albeit with pointed remarks.
Shiv Sena (UBT) spokesperson Anand Dubey welcomed the crackdown but urged the CM to look inward.
'Catching fake babas is commendable, but CM Dhami must also identify the 'Kalnemis' within his own party who are corrupt and creating social unrest,' he remarked.

Departmental inquiry ordered against nine BBMP health officials over alleged Covid bills irregularities

BENGALURU: A departmental investigation has been suggested against nine officials in connection with the alleged irregularities in Covid-related payments and bills in the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) during the previous BJP government, the retired Justice Michael D. Cunha committee has recommended. A notice was issued to 28 officers of the corporation due to 'doubts' in the purchase of medicines and medical supplies during the COVID period. It was directed that notices be given to the corporation's engineers, doctors, and officers of the accounts department to provide explanations. After receiving the notices, 28 officials responded with documents. Following verification of the officers' replies, 19 were given a clean chit. However, the department ordered an investigation of the remaining nine officers by BBMP health officials. 'These are officials in the BBMP health department who failed to give clarity over expenses and bills, and hence the matter was escalated to the BBMP Administration Department for a departmental inquiry. If these officials fail to clarify the doubts during the probe by the administration department, action will be initiated,' said Sirajuddin Madani, Chief Health Officer. Notices have also been issued to 15 private companies that supplied materials during the COVID period. The committee has suggested the recovery of Rs 13 crore paid to these 15 private companies as excess. This is not the first time BBMP health officials have landed in controversy. Earlier, Dr Kalpana, Deputy Health Officer in BBMP South Zone, was placed under suspension over approving an inflated bill of Rs 9.72 crore instead of the actual amount of Rs 2.27 crore. The amount was paid to contractors engaged in supplying food to the Indira Canteen. The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike Officers and Employees Association President, Amruth Raj, stated that it is time the black sheep in BBMP are shunted out. 'The officials involved in COVID and other scams in the BBMP—those involved in dereliction of duty—should be suspended and jailed to keep the BBMP clean,' said Amruth Raj.

Lok Seva Bhawan gherao over girl's death turns violent; several leaders injured

Bhubaneswar, July 16 (UNI) The Biju Janata Dal's (BJD) protest march to gherao the Lok Seva Bhawan over the death of Fakir Mohan Autonomous College student Soumyashree Bisi turned violent near Lower PMG Square today, leaving several party leaders and workers injured. The agitation, organized to demand a judicial probe into the incident and the resignation of Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and Higher Education Minister Suryavanshi Suraj, saw heated confrontations between BJD workers and the police. The Protesters held the government responsible for the alleged suicide of Soumyashree, a second-year student, who succumbed to burn injuries at AIIMS Bhubaneswar on the night of July 15 following a self immolation attempt on July 12. The police were forced to resort to the use of water cannons and tear gas to disperse hundreds of agitated party workers who broke through barricades and clashed with security personnel while attempting to march towards the state secretariat. Soumyashree had reportedly attempted self-immolation on the college campus on July 12, sustaining 90 percent burn injuries alleging mental and sexual harassment by Assistant Professor Samir Ranjan Sahoo who was suspended and subsequently arrested. The protest march, which included members of the BJD's student, youth, and women wings, began from Master Canteen Square. Holding placards and raising slogans, the protesters blamed the BJP-led state government for the tragedy and reiterated their demand for a judicial probe led by a sitting judge. Tensions escalated when demonstrators broke through the first police barricade and attempted to breach a second near Lower PMG Square. Clashes erupted, turning the area into a battleground. Despite repeated warnings, the agitators refused to retreat, prompting a stronger police response. Former BJD MLAs Pranab Prakash Das and Pritiranjan Ghadei were among those injured in the violence. Several women leaders of the party also sustained injuries during the clash. Police later detained hundreds of BJD leaders and workers who staged a sit-in, refusing to vacate the area. Simultaneously, the BJD observed an eight-hour bandh in Balasore district from 6 am to 2 pm, pressing for a judicial inquiry. The bandh disrupted normal life- shops, offices, and educational institutions remained shut, and vehicular movement was severely affected. BJD activists also staged 'rail roko' protests at Soro and Balasore railway stations, disrupting train services. The Odisha government has already ordered a Crime Branch investigation into the incident and announced an ex gratia payment of Rs 20 lakh to the family of the deceased student. Both FM College Principal Dillip Ghosh and Assistant Professor Samir Ranjan Sahoo have been suspended and arrested in connection with the case. In addition, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has constituted a four-member fact-finding committee headed by Professor Raj Mithal, with members Sushama Yadav, Nirja Gupta, and Asima Mangala. The panel has been directed to submit its report within a week. Meanwhile, the Congress and seven other Opposition parties- including the Samajwadi Party, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), and various Left parties- have jointly called for a statewide Odisha Bandh on July 17. They are also demanding the resignation of the Chief Minister and the Higher Education Minister, and a judicial inquiry led by a sitting judge. BJD President Naveen Patnaik has strongly condemned the police's "brutal and inhuman attack" on the party leaders and workers during the Lokseva Bhawan Ghearo agitation. Patnaik described such police brutality on peaceful protesters as barbaric. He said in this incident, many BJD workers and common people were injured. He expressed grief over the news of injuries in the attack. The BJD supremo spoke to MP Sulata Deo, former minister Pranab Prakash Das, and Prithi Ranjan Ghadei, who were injured in the police attack, over the phone, inquired about their health and wished them a speedy recovery.
