‘The Sex Lives of College Girls' Canceled at Max After 3 Seasons
The college-set series, which was co-created by Mindy Kaling and Justin Noble, has been canceled at Max after three seasons. The news comes less than two months after 'The Sex Lives of College Girls' debuted its Season 3 finale in late January, which saw an unexpected coming out story for Amrit Kaur's Bela, as well as an emotional moment for transfer student Kacey (Gracie Lawrence).
Despite the cancellation at Max, Noble is hoping to find a new home for the Warner Bros. TV series, and shared on social media the show is 'in discussions with some potential new homes for the show.'
'Unfortunately, Max has decided not to order a fourth season,' Noble wrote n a Tuesday social media post. 'We are currently in discussions with some new potential homes for the show, and it's nice that there is so much interest — but regardless of what happens, I'm proud of this show and the work that so many incredibly talented people put into it.'
Noble added that 'after seeing our show listed as the most watched or second most watched scripted show on the entire platform, for about 70 straight days, this is not the outcome that [he] saw coming.'
'No matter what happens, 'The Sex Lives of College Girls' has three seasons that showcased incredible performances and told so many important stories while also managing to fill those stories with laughs,' he continued. 'In a world of 'content,' it's a show that strived to make sure it entertained — and I feel that we did that.'
The co-creator also pointed out the dwindling number of comedy series, saying 'We are living in an era where we need that comedy badly, so I really hope that turns around.
'But I will always be proud of this show for being the thing that we weren't seeing enough of: a hard comedy ensemble where ladies get the jokes,' Noble wrote. 'And most of all, thank you to the fans. We really did do it all for you.'
Season 3 saw several shakeups for the series as Reneé Rapp exited as a series regular in a two-episode arc that said goodbye to Leighton Murray. Meanwhile, the show added two new characters: Lawrence's Kacey and Mia Rodgers' Taylor.
The Season 3 finale also left off on a cliffhanger that saw Kimberly (Pauline Chalamet) come face-to-face with school officials after a peaceful protest turned not-so-peaceful. With that cliffhanger and new love interests introduced in the final episodes of Season 3, Noble said the team has 'lots of momentum' heading into a potential fourth season.
'We have multiple new love interests that appear in these two episodes at the end of Season 3, we have the closing of some doors and different extracurriculars and school things, so there's a lot of momentum heading into a Season 4, and lots of ways we can go,' Noble said in an interview with TheWrap. 'So, pending a phone call, Mindy and I and the writers will be at the ready to decide which way to go.'
Seasons 1-3 of 'The Sex Lives of College Girls' are now streaming on Max.

James Gunn's ‘Superman' Flies Home This Week
James Gunn's Superman was pushed out of the top five at the box office this past weekend, marking the beginning of the end of its box office run. It's been a good one, with over $330 million in the U.S. so far and another $250 million worldwide. It's the highest-grossing Superman film ever, domestically not adjusted for inflation, and now the journey takes its next step. Gunn took to social media Tuesday to announce his DC Universe film will be available on digital August 15. That's this week. It's also just about a month after the film hit theaters, which is both incredibly quick but also becoming more and more standard. The film, which is available for pre-order now, will cost $30 wherever you choose to download your movies legally. No official word on any specific special features as of publication, but The Wrap teases that there will be 'an hour-long making-of documentary, various featurettes, a commentary with James Gunn, a gag reel and some deleted scenes.' If we get the official list, we'll update this article. The trade also says the physical release is on September 23. The Prime Video version also teases a 'Bonus X-Ray Edition,' too, which sounds fun. As fans start to break down the film frame by frame, TikTok by TikTok, as often happens upon digital release, Gunn is already onto the next thing. He's writing a follow-up to Superman that's not exactly 'Superman 2,' but prominently features the character. His boss, the head of Warner Bros. Discovery, David Zaslav, described it as 'the next installment in the Super-Family,' which either means Superman will team up with Supergirl, or it's some other general collection of superheroes. Whatever the case, the film is a ways off. Next up for Gunn's DC Universe is Peacemaker Season 2, which Gunn partially directed and wrote, and ties directly into Superman. Things then cool off for a few months leading into Supergirl, which is out summer 2026, followed by Clayface in October 2026. Also, the Lanterns TV show will be in there at some point too. Likely early next year. Are you going to drop the $30 to have Superman in your home? What are you most excited about rewatching? Tell us below. Want more io9 news? Roku's Next Bet: Launching the Cheapest Ad-Free Streaming Service
Roku is dipping its toes in the paid streaming service space, but is entering within its own new niche. On Aug. 5, the company announced the launch of an ad-free streaming service, Howdy, for $2.99 a month. This makes it the cheapest major, general entertainment ad-free streaming service, far below the costs of Netflix, at $18 a month, or Hulu at $19 a month. More from The Hollywood Reporter Roku Launches Howdy, a $2.99 Monthly Streaming Service Roku Delivers Stronger Than Expected Platform Revenue, Raises Outlook Roku Snags Documentary on Philadelphia Eagles Super Bowl Win (Exclusive) At launch, it will offer close to 10,000 hours of content from Lionsgate, Warner Bros. Discovery and FilmRise, including Mad Max: Fury Road, The Blind Side, Weeds and Kids in the Hall, alongside select Roku Original titles. That said, Howdy's content is unlikely to rival the breadth of titles and the new content offered on other services. But Roku isn't aiming to compete with them. 'Priced at less than a cup of coffee, Howdy is ad-free and designed to complement, not compete with, premium services,' Roku founder and CEO Anthony Wood said in the Aug. 5 announcement of the new service. The $2.99 monthly subscription comes at the right time, as the average price of ad-free plans has risen 23 percent in the past two years to $13.88, according to data firm Antenna's year-end report on the subscription landscape. Even ad-supported plans come in at a higher cost, with the average price having risen 25 percent. That means the service should appeal to those price conscious customers, as well as those who want to watch classic programming, but grow tired of advertising interruptions. According to market research firm Circana, among customers who cancel a streaming subscription, 24 percent do so because of the high cost. At the same time, 21 percent of individuals that are reducing their viewership or stopping their viewership of free, advertising-supported services are doing so because they say there are too many advertisements. For Roku, analysts see the move as a healthy way for the company to continue diversifying its revenue away from advertising alone and better monetize the traffic that's coming onto the platform. Roku reached more than 90 million streaming households as of January 2025. The new offering joins the platform's Roku Channel, a free, ad-supported streaming platform that was the most popular FAST service in June, according to the Nielsen Gauge. Roku also acquired subscription streaming service Frndly, a $6.99 monthly service which offers 50 live TV channels as well as video content, in May. Roku's platform revenue, which includes advertising and subscription revenue, is already on a solid growth trajectory, with the company reporting revenue up 18 percent year-over-year in its most recent quarter due to the strong performance of video advertising and the acquisition of Frndly. The company included the launch of Howdy in its outlook, with platform revenue set to hit $4.075 billion, up 16 percent year-over-year. Roku is on track to be operating income positive in Q4 of 2025 and for full year 2026. 'By adding owned and operated subscription services, Roku has an increasing number of ways to monetize the traffic it directs from its home screen: drive users to The Roku Channel (which monetizes through advertising), drive to its subscription services, Frndly and Howdy, drive to third-party apps where it may or may not take a cut of ads and/or subscription fees and drive transactional pay-per-view,' Lightshed analysts Rich Greenfield, Brandon Ross and Mark Kelley said in an Aug. 5 note. In adding Howdy into the company's streaming services, John Buffone, vice president and media entertainment industry advisor at Circana, notes that Roku is 'playing now in basically all the streaming areas.' Given the popularity of bundling among consumers, Buffone said he could also see Roku offering bundled packages of Howdy alongside Frndly, other streamers or in partnership with third-parties similar to how Walmart's subscription service includes Paramount+. 'I think this gives them an opportunity to bundle with their company-owned services, with SVOD services that they carry on our operating system. And if they want to go beyond media, there should be a lot of activations available there as well,' Buffone said. The app began automatically appearing on Roku homescreens Aug. 5, which already gives it a free, large reach, and the plan is to launch the service on mobile and other platforms in the future. The only downside for Roku with the service is not having the opportunity to place ads to direct consumers to their other services. 'Notably, Roku's only cost to marketing Howdy is the opportunity cost of not marketing other content that might drive a consumer to watch ad-supported content on The Roku Channel,' the Lightshed analysts said. Reneé Rapp has gone from an exciting, talented newcomer in several entertainment fields to a certified superstar in just a few years. The singer and actress first made herself known in the TV series The Sex Lives of College Girls before starring as Regina George in the musical film adaptation of Mean Girls. In between projects, Rapp has managed a music career, which has taken off spectacularly. Her fanbase is global, but in the United Kingdom, it seems especially strong, as that's where her new album Bite Me earns its most impressive starting points. Bite Me Launches at No. 1 on Several Charts Bite Me opens on six tallies in the U.K. this week, and it leads many of them. Rapp debuts her sophomore full-length at No. 1 on the Official Albums chart, the ranking of the most consumed projects in the country. The title also begins its time in first place on the Official Album Sales, Official Physical Albums, and Official Vinyl Albums rankings. Reneé Rapp Reaches the Top 10 Bite Me is a top 10 win on every tally on which it appears in the U.K. at the moment. As it leads four lists, it also launches in fifth place on the Official Album Downloads chart and at No. 10 on the ranking of the most streamed collections. Bite Me Follows Snow Angel Bite Me arrives almost exactly two years after Snow Angel, her debut full-length. That project was also a top 10 success in the U.K., as it stalled at No. 7 on the main ranking of the biggest titles. 'Leave Me Alone' Introduced Bite Me Bite Me was fronted by several singles which arrived before the album dropped in full, with 'Leave Me Alone' kicking things off and introducing the new rock sound the set was centered around. That tune reached No. 69 on the main songs tally in the U.K., earning Rapp only her second appearance on the list. She also made the 100-spot roster that measures the most consumed songs in the U.K. with 'Not My Fault,' a collaboration with Megan Thee Stallion, which was created specifically for Mean Girls.
