New-look Bears open 2025 training camp hoping to end years of rebuilds
Why it matters: The Bears have the talent to turn around a dismal decade that has been marred with rebuilds and yearly retooling.
Flashback: Bears fans have heard this before. Last year, the team pushed the narrative that quarterback Caleb Williams would forgo usual rookie growing pains because the team was emerging from a two-year rebuild.
Reality check: They were wrong. The team struggled with Williams under center and sputtered to a 5-12 record, leading to the in-season firing of head coach Matt Eberflus.
Eberflus' on-the-field gaffes, like giving up a Hail Mary touchdown to the Commanders and mismanaging the clock in a last-second loss to the Lions on Thanksgiving, were national embarrassments.
State of play: Whiz-kid and former Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson has taken over this team, which once again, has the goods … on paper.
Johnson and general manager Ryan Poles made the offensive line the offseason priority, bringing in proven veterans to anchor protection for Williams.
They used their top draft picks to select tight end Colston Loveland and wide receiver Luther Burden to give Williams more weapons.
Between the lines: The Bears brass are hoping Johnson and Williams click, and Johnson is known for high-octane offense and clicking with his quarterbacks, so the chances are good that it will happen here.
Then again, Johnson has never been a head coach before. The Bears last two head coaches without experience were Eberflus and Matt Nagy.
The other side (of the ball): The defense should be improved as well. The team brought in reinforcements to help Montez Sweat on the defensive line, but it's more about keeping their young players on the field in 2025.
Safety Jaquan Brisker should be back after missing most of last season with a concussion.
The latest: The Bears' only Pro-Bowler, Jaylon Johnson, has been put on the injury list and will miss the beginning of training camp.
The bottom line: The hype is real and the Bears are hoping to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the 1985 Super Bowl team with a repeat performance.

Venus Williams 'up to fight' after first tennis win in two years

The 45-year-old needed 97 minutes to dispatch of No. 35 Peyton Stearns (23) of the United States 6-3, 6-4 on Tuesday at the DC Open in Washington. The former world No. 1 -- who is currently unranked -- edged her foe 9-3 in aces and converted 6 of 14 break point opportunities, compared to Stearns' 4 of 6 clip. "I think there were times where I was just trigger-happy," Williams told reporters. "Going crazy really fast, and I sort of convinced myself to play those points, be patient, slow down. "I think it was a big win for me. Like I said, it's not easy. It won't be easy. It's not easy for anyone out here. So I know I'll have to fight for every match, but I'm up for that." Williams' win was her first of the tour-level variety since she beat Russian Veronika Kudermetova on Aug. 14, 2023, at the Cincinnati Open. "It is not easy to come off after all that time and play the perfect match," Williams said. "All the players on the WTA are playing amazing. Peyton played so well. I was trying to slow myself down." Williams is the oldest woman to win a tour-level match in singles play since Martina Navratilova won at Wimbledon 2004 at 47. Her last match entering Tuesday ocucrred at the 2024 Miami Open. She lost that March 19, 2024, meeting with Diana Shnaider in straight sets. She missed significant time over the last several years due to multiple injuries. She also underwent surgery last year to remove uterine fibroids before staging her comeback. "It's so rewarding to come back after a layoff and injuries and also i didn't have to come back to play," Williams said. "I'm back here because of encouragement from my team. They wanted me to come back and play again." Williams will take on No. 24 Magdalena Frech (27) of Poland in the Round of 16. The winner will battle No. 12 Elena Rybakina (26) of Kazakhstan or No. 88 Victoria Mboko (18) of Canada in the quarterfinals.

Commanders put Terry McLaurin on did not report list, Sam Cosmi on PUP list
Wide receiver Terry McLaurin is officially holding out of training camp. The Commanders placed McLaurin on the did not report list on Wednesday morning, which sets the stage for daily fines of $50,000 until the wideout joins the club to prepare for the 2025 season. McLaurin opted not to report because he wants a new contract with the team that would presumably make any short-term losses easier to swallow. Washington also announced that guard Sam Cosmi has been placed on the physically unable to perform list. Cosmi tore his ACL in the team's playoff win over the Lions. Both players can be activated at any point in camp, although the timing of Cosmi's injury likely means he'll be out for quite a while. They'll be hoping that the relationship with McLaurin is mended more quickly.
