Legendary Emmerdale star returns to soap six years on from explosive exit with unfinished business - and their first scenes have already been filmed
Emmerdale is set for a dramatic twist as a major character is set to make a surprise comeback - and their first scenes have already been filmed.
In a move that's sure to thrill soap fans, Robert Sugden is reportedly returning to the village in a storyline packed with emotional tension and family drama.
Six years have passed since Ryan Hawley bowed out of the ITV soap, leaving viewers heartbroken when his character was written out in 2019.
Now, according to The Sun, the actor has stepped back into Robert's shoes for a short stint, with his return set to air next month.
He is believed to be returning for ex-husband Aaron Dingle's wedding to his killer brother John Sugden.
An insider told the publication: 'Ryan has a lot of respect for the show and its fans and he really wanted to give them a treat so he agreed to come back for a brief stint.
'It's going to be a huge surprise for fans especially the Robron fans who have missed Robert desperately since Ryan quit.
'Nothing was seen as being too extreme to keep the secret with fake names on scripts, smuggling him in and out of the studios and keeping everything very tight.'
MailOnline has contacted ITV for comment.
Ryan is the fourth actor to have played Robert, taking up the role in 2014 and following in the footsteps of Richard Smith, Christopher Smith and Karl Davies.
In one of his most explosive storylines, he accidentally killed sister-in-law Katie after she took a photo of him and Aaron kissing whilst he was engaged to Chrissie White.
During his time in the role, Ryan has won various awards, including a Tric Award for Soap Actor last year and the gong for Best Soap Actor at the TV Choice Awards the year before.
He also bagged Best Partnership with Danny Miller at the Inside Soap Awards back in 2016 and Best Newcomer at the same awards ceremony in 2015.
In June 2019, Ryan quit his role on the soap after five years of playing the much-loved character.
The actor reportedly decided to leave the long-running soap to pursue 'other projects'.
An insider told The Sun in 2019: 'Emmerdale fans have loved every minute of RobRon's story, and what Ryan has brought to playing Robert.
'But he has decided to take a break from the show for the foreseeable future and try other projects.
Since his departure from the Dales, Ryan has been gracing other television shows with his presence.
He made an appearance on Casualty last year as Jamie Cleveland, and stunned fans with a dramatic new look featuring a long hairstyle and beard in Silent Witness.
The actor has also been part of Channel 5's revival of All Creatures Great & Small as Sid Crabtree.

JoJo Siwa signs up to reality show as she secretly films in the UK after reuniting with CBB star Chris Hughes
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) SHE was the standout star of this year's Celebrity Big Brother thanks to her surprising romance with a housemate. Now JoJo Siwa, who started a relationship with Chris Hughes while she was on the ITV show, is about to compete on the Great British Bake Off. A TV insider said: "This is a bit of a coup for the Bake Off because Jojo is currently one of the most talked about young stars on TV right now. "She's barely had time to catch her breath, leaving CBB last month amid huge media attention and heading straight into another huge show this month. "It's also a fantastic gig for her because although she already has a fanbase over here, the cookery contest also introduces her to a wider British audience. "Plus she got plenty of experience of cooking in front of the cameras while she was on Celebrity Big brother, though this time she won't have hunky Chris to distract her." Jojo actually became famous for her dancing/baking Tiktoks on the social media site, though they're unlikely to help her much when she's doing it for real. The celebrity version of the Bake Off, whose participants have yet to be confirmed by C4, is being made just before filming of the "civilian" version. Jojo might end up wishing she was back in the house with Mickey Rorrke... The show kicks off this summer with Noel Fielding and Alison Hammond returning to host as well as Paul Hollywood coming back to give the celebs some serious scrutiny in the tent. Channel 4 star Prue Leith has stepped back from all GBBO specials, with cooking expert, and pal, Caroline Waldegrave filling her shoes. Last year, The Sun revealed how Prue had made the decision to step back from the Great British Bake Off specials and focus on the regular series. Channel 4 previously confirmed Prue's close friend Caroline would be taking over her role. Caroline, 72, is a former managing director of Leiths School of Food & Wine, which she bought from Prue in the mid-90s. Married to former Tory politician William Waldegrave, Lady Caroline has also co-written several successful cookery books.

JoJo Siwa says Chris Hughes feels like family and her mother ‘adores' him
Former Dance Moms star JoJo Siwa has said TV host Chris Hughes feels like family, adding that her parents think the 'absolute world' of him. The two met in the ITV1 Celebrity Big Brother house, growing close during their time on the reality show, claiming their relationship was 'platonic'. Advertisement Since leaving the house, they have been seen together and recently shared photographs of them together on Instagram, suggesting they are in a relationship. View this post on Instagram A post shared by JoJo Siwa (@itsjojosiwa) Siwa, 22, told Channel 4's Sunday Brunch: 'She (Siwa's mother) does love him. My parents think the absolute world of him and him and my dad are like best friends. 'Chris was actually telling me that yesterday they went to the spa together. They're literally best friends. 'Mum, she absolutely adores him. I love watching her watch us because I've never seen my mum so happy. Advertisement 'It feels like we're a family. It feels like he's been in my family for however many years. It feels like they just all get along as well as I do. 'I think there will definitely be a lot more time spent here, and I think from him as well, a lot more time spent over there, but we both have families, you know, on either end.' The 22-year old singer is known for her songs Karma and Guilty Pleasure, which she released in 2024, while sports presenter Hughes, 32, appeared on the third season of the ITV reality TV series Love Island. Speaking about her decision to join Celebrity Big Brother, she said: 'I didn't even question a yes or no. I knew it wasn't even a question. It was an immediate yes. Advertisement 'I think for me, growing up on reality TV, it almost feels like a little bit of home to me, and it just feels like it's just fun. 'And right before I went in, I told my mom, I was like, I think this is gonna be the best thing I've ever done. And she's like, what do you mean? And I was like, I don't know, something tells me, like for my personal, like for my life, it feels like it's gonna be the best thing I've ever done and by a landslide it has been. 'Being on Big Brother you're captured 24/7 so for people to just get to see the real me was something that I wasn't sure how to share, essentially on my own, I guess I wasn't brave enough to share it.' The Celebrity Big Brother final saw Coronation Street actor Jack P Shepherd crowned the winner. Advertisement Siwa placed third on the ITV1 reality show while Hughes came sixth.
