Tampa Bay Rays' Wander Franco guilty of sexually abusing minor but gets suspended sentence
Prosecutors said the acts took place in his native Dominican Republic and involved payments and travel arrangements that constituted exploitation.
'The court has understood she was manipulated,' judge Jakayra Veras said before the sentence was read.
The victim's mother was also convicted on Thursday and sentenced to 10 years in prison and issued a fine equal to 30 payments of the country's minimum wage.
The attorney general's office had requested a prison sentence of five years for Franco and 10 for the girl's mother.
Franco had been under investigation since August 2023 and was placed on administrative leave by the MLB. Once considered one of baseball's top young prospects, Franco signed an 11-year, $182m (R3.2bn) contract extension with the Rays in 2021. He has not played in the major leagues since being placed on leave.

Austria mourns 10 victims of 'abominable' school shooting
GRAZ - Grieving Austrians held tearful memorials for the 10 people shot dead at a high school by a former pupil, an unprecedented attack in the Alpine nation. Mourners cried, hugged and left flowers, candles and letters to the victims in churches and outside the school in Austria's second-largest city of Graz. The government declared three days of mourning for the victims of Tuesday's shooting at the Dreierschuetzengasse secondary school, including a national moment of silence on Wednesday morning. Church bells rang out across Austria as people stopped in the streets, radio and TV programmes were interrupted and public transport was halted. A teacher and nine teenagers, including a Franco-Austrian and a Polish national, aged between 14 and 17, were among the victims, Austrian press agency APA reported. Of the eleven people wounded, nine were still in intensive care but in a stable condition on Wednesday, according to hospital officials. Hundreds of people also rushed to donate blood, responding to a call from the Red Cross. At a memorial event on Wednesday, one student recalled the moment the children realised there was a shooter. She said students were "running for their lives" as older children tried to protect the younger ones. Police said the alleged perpetrator was an Austrian from the Graz region who used two legally owned weapons -- a shotgun and a pistol.

Suspected mastermind of French crypto kidnappings held in Morocco
A 24-year-old Franco-Moroccan man suspected of masterminding a series of kidnappings targeting cryptocurrency entrepreneurs in France has been arrested in Morocco, France said. Badiss Mohamed Amide Bajjou was wanted by the French authorities and was the subject of an Interpol red notice for "arrest, kidnapping, false imprisonment or arbitrary detention of a hostage." The suspect was arrested in the northern Moroccan city of Tangier, according to a statement from the country's General Directorate for National Security carried by Moroccan state news agency MAP. France has been shaken by a series of kidnappings and attempted abductions targeting cryptocurrency bosses and their families in recent months, prompting one prominent crypto entrepreneur to call on authorities to "stop the Mexicanisation" of the country. "I sincerely thank Morocco for this arrest, which demonstrates excellent judicial cooperation between our two countries, particularly in the fight against organised crime," French Justice Minister Gerald Darmanin said on X. A native of Le Chesnay west of Paris, Bajjou is suspected of being one of the masterminds behind the high-profile kidnapping in January of French crypto boss David Balland and his partner, according to French daily Le Parisien. Balland co-founded the crypto firm Ledger, valued at the time at more than $1 billion. Balland's finger was cut off by his kidnappers, who demanded a hefty ransom. Last week French authorities charged 25 people, including six minors, over the series of kidnappings and attempted abductions. The crimes have become a major embarrassment for the French government and have sparked concern about the security of wealthy crypto tycoons, who have notched up immense fortunes from the booming business. In May, Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau held an emergency meeting with cryptocurrency leaders, with the ministry announcing plans to bolster their security.
