First look an NEW Betway Premiership trophy

Mamelodi Sundowns got to lift the new Betway Premiership trophy on Sunday following their 2-0 home win over Magesi FC.
Masandawana won a record-extending eighth league title this season – and their 15th overall.
As a reminder, Betway took over as headline sponsors of the league in South Africa ahead of the current season from Absa who stepped away.
Brazilian Lucas Ribeiro scored twice as champions Mamelodi Sundowns wrapped up their Betway Premiership season on Sunday with a win over lowly Magesi FC at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria.
It took his league tally to 16 goals, two more than team-mate Iqraam Rayners and eight ahead of another Mamelodi Sundowns star from Brazil, Arthur Sales, and Devin Titus from third-placed Stellenbosch FC.
Ribeiro, who joined the Pretoria club from Belgian outfit Beveren in mid 2023, was lauded by Chilean Marcelo Allende, one of five South Americans on Mamelodi Sundowns' books.
'Lucas is not only the best footballer in South Africa, he is the best footballer in Africa,' said the midfielder.
Ribeiro deflected a Rayners shot past veteran Zimbabwean goalkeeper Elvis Chipezeze to give Masandawana a fourth-minute lead at Loftus Versfeld.
His second goal on 22 minutes stemmed from a clever free-kick manoeuvre that ended with Ribeiro placing the ball in the corner of the net with Chipezeze stationery.
A Rayners header off a Ribeiro cross and a Teboho Mokoena free-kick both rebounded off the woodwork in a first half dominated by the home side.
Mamelodi Sundowns also controlled the second half against 12th-placed Magesi FC and Sales wasted a great opportunity to increase the lead when he scuffed a low cross.
'It was a pleasure to watch Sundowns playing tonight,' said Miguel Cardoso, the Portuguese coach who replaced sacked local mentor Manqoba Mngqithi last December.
'There was energy, character and happiness from the players, and the second goal was perfectly constructed.
'I hope all South Africans are proud of Sundowns because they are fantastic ambassadors for the country,' added the 52-year-old.
Mamelodi Sundowns completed the 28-round Betway Premiership with 73 points, the same total as last season, but from two fewer matches after Royal AM were booted out the league.
Having conquered South Africa again, they now turn their attention to the two-leg CAF Champions League final, then the Club World Cup in the United States.
Mamelodi Sundowns face Egyptian outfit Pyramids in the premier African club competition on May 24 in Pretoria and June 1 in Cairo.
In the revamped Club World Cup, they are in Group F with Fluminense, Borussia Dortmund and South Korean representatives Ulsan.
The other African contenders are Al Ahly of Egypt, Esperance of Tunisia and Wydad Casablanca of Morocco, all former Champions League winners. Champions Mamelodi Sundowns completed their Betway Premiership season on Sunday with a win over lowly Magesi FC in Pretoria. Image: Mamelodi Sundowns website

PSL finally announces new dates for the playoffs

The Premier Soccer League (PSL) has officially announced new dates for the relegation/promotion playoffs. The three-team mini-tournament was initially scheduled to get underway on 27 May but the league had to postpone it. And this was due to unresolved issues in the Motsepe Foundation Championship involving Durban City, JDR Stars and Cape Town Spurs. Both JDR Stars and Cape Town Spurs accused champions Durban City of fielding Saziso Magawana, claiming he was not properly registered. However, their cases were dismissed last, and thus, paving way for Durban City to be crowned champions. Now, the ruling also meant both Orbit College and Casric Stars were to play in the playoffs alongside Cape Town City. Of course, Cape Town City are disappointed with the PSL that the game between SuperSport United and Golden Arrows had to be replayed after the season had 'officially' concluded. Nonetheless, they have since accepted their fate and are gearing up for the playoffs to try and retain their Betway Premiership status. PSL confirms relegation/promotion playoffs dates. Five key players who could rescue Cape Town City's Premiership status

Cape Town City and Stellenbosch FC The stakes in the derby between Cape Town City and Stellenbosch never have been higher than it will be on Saturday. Photo: BackpagePix Image: BackpagePix Once riding high in the Premiership, Cape Town City now find themselves navigating unfamiliar waters. The rhythm that led them to an impressive fifth-place finish in the 2023/24 season has faltered, replaced by uncertainty and a battle for survival. Now, in a make-or-break scenario, they must overcome two determined NFD Motsepe Foundation Championship (MFC) sides—Casric Stars and Orbit College—to secure their place in the Betway Premiership. This is uncharted territory for the Citizens, a club that has consistently finished within the top eight since the 2014/15 season, when they ended the campaign in 10th place. One of their finest moments came in the 2021/22 season, when they proudly claimed second place behind Mamelodi Sundowns. However, their fortunes have since taken a troubling turn. A run of poor results, compounded by a series of coaching changes—including the exits of Eric Tinkler and Muhsin Ertugral—has left the team in a vulnerable position. With their top-flight status hanging by a thread, a decisive performance in the upcoming playoffs is essential. Here, Obakeng Meletse looks at five key players who could prove crucial in Cape Town City's fight for survival. Photo: Chris Ricco Image: Chris Ricco The 35-year-old is experienced both locally and internationally, and with his side now facing a situation this current crop of players hasn't truly encountered before, his leadership in marshalling the defense and guiding the team to make as few mistakes as possible will be crucial in overcoming the challenge posed by both Motsepe Foundation Championship sides. The Citizens conceded 31 goals this past season, and many of their difficulties stemmed from an inability to keep clean sheets. The experienced campaigner will need to ensure that, in the upcoming matches, the team concedes as few goals as possible — a factor that could ultimately make the difference. Thulani Serero Former Bafana Bafana and Ajax Amsterdam midfielder Thulani Serero has returned to the Mother City after a decade playing abroad. Serero has yet to make the kind of impact he would have hoped for since returning to South African football, but the upcoming play-offs present a perfect opportunity for him to remind everyone why he is regarded as one of the finest midfielders this country has ever produced. Mamelodi Sundowns to snatch defender from Chiefs and Pirates

Mamelodi Sundowns are gearing up for a high-stakes transfer window, with major signings and exits on the cards. At the centre of attention is Stellenbosch FC's standout performer, Fawaaz Basadien, and Sundowns are determined to beat Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates to his signature. As previously revealed, Sundowns have placed Basadien high on their transfer wishlist and are now frontrunners to land the versatile defender. The 28-year-old had a stellar season with Stellenbosch, which has only intensified interest from South Africa's biggest clubs. Stellenbosch FC appear willing to cash in, recognising the player's contribution to a historic campaign that saw them lift the Carling Knockout and reach the semi-finals of the CAF Confederation Cup. Despite Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates showing interest, Sundowns are poised to win the race, thanks largely to their financial muscle and recent dominance in local football. 'Chiefs have also been interested in the player but could lose out to Sundowns, as they have on numerous occasions in the past because of the Tshwane giants' ability to fork out big transfer fees,' said the source. This trend looks set to continue unless Kaizer Chiefs makes a bold counter-offer. Basadien has served Stellenbosch with distinction. Playing a pivotal role in one of the most successful periods in the club's history. Now, with his stock at an all-time high. The defender is eyeing a step up to the country's top footballing echelon. 'It's seen as an opportunity for the 28-year-old to make a big career move. And indications are that he is ready to take it,' the sources suggest. However, any potential move to Sundowns is likely to materialise only after the FIFA Club World Cup. Giving Stellies more time to plan for life without their star man. Will Mamelodi Sundowns make the big bid and end the Basadien saga? Let us know by leaving a comment below or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1.
