Wood on fire in sizzling Darwin Supercars practice

Yahoo20-06-2025
Ryan Wood has scorched the Supercars field to set the fastest time in the first practice session in Darwin.
The Walkinshaw Andretti United youngster outpaced nearest challenger Broc Feeney by more than two-tenths of a second in the Top End dry-season heat on Friday.
Wood set the best lap of one minute and 7.059 seconds, with championship-leader Feeney 0.265 seconds behind and Triple Eight teammate Will Brown another hundredth of a second behind him in third.
Drivers tested the limits of Hidden Valley's challenging 2.9km circuit, with several racers overshooting the long, loopy left-hander at turn one.
A patch of parched grass at the end of the turn was set alight after Brown ran his Camaro off towards the end of the session.

With temperatures expected to run into the 30s throughout the weekend - and up to 50C inside cars - drivers' endurance will be as much of a challenge as keeping their cars running.
Feeney was the first driver to run off on the first turn at the end of the 1.1km straight, but recovered to set a speedy lap time that had him at the top of the totem for most of the session.
The 22-year-old won the last two races in Perth and showed promising pace as he looks to extend his 72-point gap at the top of the leaderboard at the track he won two races at last year.
Teenage wildcard entrant Rylan Gray, Matt Stone Racing veteran Nick Percat and Tickford's Cam Waters also took excursions off the track on turn one, while Andre Heimgartner battled to hold onto control of his lively Camaro on several occasions.
Drivers will return for the final practice session at 2.55pm (ACST) on Friday, ahead of Saturday's back-to-back qualifying sessions.
Two 120km races will follow qualifying on Saturday, before the final 200km race of the weekend on Sunday.

Damning reason behind calls for Latrell Mitchell shift as Bennet faces tough decision

Rabbitohs coach Wayne Bennett is facing growing calls to keep Jye Gray in the No.1 jersey for the remainder of the season after Latrell Mitchell made a successful switch on the weekend. Mitchell was a massive inclusion for the South Sydney Rabbitohs last weekend and ignited the side's attack in the win over the Gold Coast Titans. Bennett has mostly named Mitchell in the No.1 jersey this year when fit, but opted to play their star in the centres due to a lack of options due to injury against the Titans. And the Rabbitohs talisman helped set-up the first try for Alex Johnston in the 20-18 win. The victory saw the Rabbitohs jump the Titans on for and against with Gold Coast now sitting in the wooden spoon position. Although both teams are fighting to avoid last place going forward with a number of huge games emerging. And Bennett is now facing a tough call on whether to keep the winning formula or shift Mitchell back to fullback. Gray was excellent against the Titans on the weekend having run for 181 metres and offered a lively presence at the back for the Rabbitohs. The team has benefited from Gray's energy back in the side having missed him for a number of weeks after his round 15 setback. And leading NRL commentator Andrew Voss has claimed Bennett should leave Gray in the No.1 jersey with the stats proving the team have benefited when he is at the back. The Rabbitohs have won five of 12 games when Gray has lined-up at fullback in 2025, according to However, they have only won two of seven games when Mitchell was playing fullback. While there are plenty of factors to consider when tossing up the skills they bring to the team, Voss feels the Rabbitohs look better with Gray at fullback and Mitchell at centre. 'I said it at the start of the year. Remember at the start of the year when Latrell wasn't there, Souths were winning games," Voss said on SEN Radio. 'I just think Jye Gray, in that particular side, is the energiser bunny. I think he is a first grader and his only position is fullback.' NRL great Greg Alexander wasn't as convinced as Voss and claimed he would move Mitchell back when fully fit. 'I'm not confident Jye Gray is the man," he added. 'Where would Jye Gray fall in the pecking order of fullbacks?' Voss pointed out Gray's energy at the back benefited the Rabbitohs and he would leave Mitchell at centre. And Alexander accepted if playing centre meant Mitchell could play the majority of a season then it could be worth it keeping him there going forward. Mitchell has only played 11 games so far for the side in 2025 due to injury and State of Origin. 'I think after playing less than half of games over the last three years, it is worth a roll of the dice to leave Latrell in the centres," he added. 'He can still have an impact on the game. He only needs 10 touches and he can come up with a couple of try assists, a line break and a big play. He can do that in the centres. It's worth having him play a bigger part of the season." Wayne Bennett praises Latrell Mitchells return This isn't the first time this season fans have debated where Mitchell's best position is for the Rabbitohs. Fans will find out where Mitchell is named for the clash against the Eels on the weekend with a win maybe enough to help Bennett avoid his first ever wooden spoon. The coach was full of praise for Mitchell on the weekend having returned and captained the side from left centre. Mitchell hadn't played in a number of weeks due to a quad injury, but was ready instrumental in the win. "We probably don't win if he doesn't play," Bennett said. "The other guys have all been playing their hearts out and doing their best. He's just a quality player, in the top four or five in the country, and showed that today."

Reed Mahoney question emerges at Bulldogs after major development around teammate

Bailey Hayward's new contract extension and promotion to the Bulldogs' starting side has sparked fresh questions over Reed Mahoney role in Canterbury's 17-man squad for the rest of the season. Hayward is poised to become the long-term hooker at the Bulldogs after signing a contract extension on Monday that keeps him at the club until the end of 2028 and Mahoney's game time has gradually diminished this year after the mid-season arrival of Lachie Galvin. Bulldogs coach Cameron Ciraldo provided a glimpse into his side's plans for the rest of the NRL season after making a late switch last week by benching Mahoney and opting to start with Hayward in the round 23 victory over the Warriors. Mahoney was named in the No.9 jersey but found himself having to settle for a spot on the bench, with Ciraldo only throwing him on for the final 16 minutes. In contrast, Hayward featured at hooker for most of the game and impressed in his 69-minute stint that saw the tireless Dogs forward get through a mountain of work. Canterbury utility and Maroons Origin star Kurt Mann was also afforded 35 minutes off the bench, with Ciraldo only bringing Mahoney on for the final stages of the 32-14 win. Ciraldo confirmed that Hayward would remain as the starting No.9 for Friday night's clash against the Roosters, posing fresh questions around Mahoney's role going forward. The 27-year-old Mahoney has already agreed to join the Cowboys from next season, having seen his game-time effected after the arrival of mid-season recruit, Lachie Galvin. Questions over Reed Mahoney's role at Bulldogs after benching But after the move from Ciraldo to promote Hayward into the first-choice hooking role, veteran NRL commentator Andrew Voss questioned whether there remains a place for Mahoney in the Bulldogs' 17 heading towards the finals. "If you've moved Reed Mahoney from the starting hooker then I don't think he adds value to your bench," Voss said on SEN radio on Tuesday. RELATED: Roosters stars raise fresh concerns over $828 million stadium problem Beautiful family detail as Maroons Origin player signs with Dragons Titans make big call on Des Hasler in bid to keep Gold Coast captain With the supremely fit Hayward able to get through big minutes and Maroons star Mann offering another option in the hooker rotation, it's something Ciraldo will have to consider as he searches for his ideal 17. Having two smaller bodies in Mahoney and Mann on the bench means the Bulldogs can only carry two other players on the interchange and if Ciraldo does feel the need to add another powerful forward, then Mahoney's spot looks the one in most jeopardy. Hayward has become a mainstay of the Bulldogs' first grade side since his debut last year, and has shown his versatility in a number of different roles. But it's at hooker where the club sees his long-term future and Bulldogs supremo Phil Gould says they're delighted to lock him down at the club, long-term. "We're extremely happy to have Bailey extend his time at the club," Gould said. "He has shown an innate ability to play in multiple positions, and we have a clear vision for him to become a leader in our side." The Bulldogs look set to be boosted by the surprise early return of Connor Tracey for the Roosters clash, after Gould's previous concerns that he might not return before the finals. Tracey was taken to hospital with an abdominal haematoma after the Round 21 win over Manly. It was originally suggested he'd need three weeks of complete rest before resuming training, but Ciraldo said he Tracey was keen to play last week and he's in line to return against the Roosters. He won't be when Touponau returns. Mann can cover 9 if one of the backs goes down. 'Cry me a river': Excuse from Broncos fans slammed amid Reece Walsh and Haas truth

Leading NRL reporter David Riccio and former player James Graham have squashed excuses surrounding the Broncos season being derailed after a string of injuries last week with stars such as Reece Walsh and Payne Haas still in the squad. Last week, Broncos fans were left in disbelief having watched Adam Reynolds along with Ezra Mam go down both clutching at their hamstrings in the one play. Cobbo then injured his hamstring later in the 22-2 loss to the Melbourne Storm. Cobbo and Mam are expected to miss the remainder of the season, while Reynolds is a hope of returning if the Broncos make finals footy. Many Brisbane fans admitted their season could have gone up in smokes in the one play having watched both their halves limp off the field. Although Queensland representative Ben Hunt will likely slot into the halves to replace one of them, while his partner is up in the air. Regardless, not everyone is sympathetic for Broncos fans. NRL reporter Riccio hit back at the excuses he has heard since last Thursday. Riccio claimed he doesn't buy into the ominous chat surrounding the club suggesting many teams are dealing with injuries in 2025 and the squad still holds players such as Reece Walsh and Payne Haas in the starting XIII. "Cry me a river. Are we seriously going to sit here, and Broncos fans are going to go now rip up there grand final tickets, on the basis of what has happened with these three injuries," Riccio said on Triple M's NRL Daily. "There are clubs that have gone through so much worse, this season, and been able to respond. "Not only that, they still maintain a roster that includes Reece Walsh, Pat Carrigan, Kotoni Staggs, Ben Hunt, Payne can help you win a comp. Here we are, the Broncos, are going to play the whole poor me still have a star-studded roster, go and win the comp and show us what you are made of." Former NRL star James Graham said the Broncos had already missed their chance of a top four finish after some poor performances earlier in the season. "The reason they are not going to play top four is because of other results at the start of the season. It's not because they lost three players in Melbourne," he said. Despite the injuries last week, coach Michael Maguire didn't offer an excuse having claimed the team can cover the injuries. 'We'll be right,' he said. 'I mean, we've got people in the background that can come in. That's part of the progression. We've been able to bring a few people in and change around a little bit, so we'll work through that throughout the week.' Winning the premiership having finished outside the top four in finals footy has proven to be a rare feat in the NRL. Although the Broncos face a fight just to remain in the top eight. Brisbane face a huge game this weekend against the Dolphins on Saturday night and both teams will view it as a must win game. The Dolphins suffered a shock 64-12 hammering at the hands of the Roosters last weekend and will be looking to bounce back at Suncorp Stadium. And coach Maguire is expected to make a surprise announcement in his halves for the Saturday night game. RELATED: Beautiful family detail as Maroons Origin player signs with Dragons Titans make big call on Des Hasler in bid to keep Gold Coast captain NRL world divided over Mitch Moses' furious act towards teammate Kevin Walters calls for his son to play in the halves Against Melbourne, Staggs switched from centre to five-eighth after Reynolds and Mam went down, and Maguire has the option of keeping him there for their crunch clash with the Dolphins. Although calls are growing for Billy Walters to shift from No.9 to five-eighth for the vital clash. According to former Broncos Kevin Walters, Maguire is better served playing Staggs in the centres. And the former coach reckons it might be son Billy at No.6 with Hunt at halfback. 'I feel like Kotoni is better in the centres,' Walters said on Fox League. 'The Broncos need someone who is more of a genuine six. Kotoni did a good job the other night but his asset is his running and power game and that's best served in the centres. Billy is an option for them at six.' League legend Wally Lewis agreed and claimed Walters' expected move to the halves is another chance for the Broncos star to silence his critics and believes he will thrive in the jersey his famous father once played in for the Broncos.
