Paul Gascoigne recovering after collapse at Dorset home
'Paul is in hospital, which is the best possible place for him to be right now,' Foster told The Sun newspaper. Gascoigne was initially admitted to an intensive care ward on Friday before being moved to an acute medical unit, where his condition is now stable.
Foster added that Gascoigne 'would like to thank everyone for the support he's received so far from so many old friends who wish him well and want to see him back to his best.'
One of England's most talented footballers, Gascoigne played for top clubs including Tottenham, Newcastle, Lazio, and Rangers. He earned 57 caps for England and became a global icon during the 1990 World Cup in Italy, where his emotional reaction to a yellow card in the semi-final against West Germany captured hearts worldwide.
Gascoigne also played a key role in England's Euro 96 campaign, which ended in another penalty shootout defeat to Germany. His career has been overshadowed by well-documented struggles with alcohol addiction and mental health issues.
In 2020, Gascoigne claimed to have turned his life around after undergoing a medical procedure involving anti-alcohol pellets. However, last year he admitted on the High Performance podcast that he was still battling personal challenges, describing himself as a 'sad drunk' living in his agent's spare room. - AFP

2026 FIFA World Cup draw in Vegas on Dec 5: Reports
LOS ANGELES: Las Vegas will play host to the 2026 World Cup draw on December 5, according to multiple reports on Tuesday, with The Sphere serving as the ceremony site. ESPN and TUDN'Mexico said Vegas had been picked for the draw of the expanded 48-team event, which will be hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico. In all, 12 groups of four nations will be drawn. When the United States played host to the 1994 World Cup, the draw ceremony was also conducted in Las Vegas. ESPN's report said that The Sphere, a 17,500-seat venue which opened in 2023 that boasts a screen of 54,000 square meters, was seen as the front-runner for the draw site. In 1994, the draw was staged in Las Vegas even though it was not a host city for any matches, a situation that is also the case for next year's event.--AFP

Englishman Trafford, who won the golden glove with 29 clean sheets in the Championship last season, has re-joined the club where he spent eight years as a youth player for 27 million pounds ($36 million), English media reports said. 'Rejoining City is such special and proud moment both for me and my family. I always dreamed that one day I would be able to come back to Manchester City," Trafford said in a statement shared by City. 'This is the place I call home – it's a truly special football club with fantastic people who make it such a unique place to work and play." Trafford played on loan at third-tier sides Accrington Stanley and Bolton Wanderers before making a permanent move to Burnley in 2023, where he played his first full season in the Premier League, making 28 appearances as the club was relegated. But the six-foot-six keeper returned to form in the Championship last season, with Burnley conceding only 16 goals in the campaign, 14 fewer than champions Leeds United. "I am still very young and hungry to keep learning and improving – and I know there is no better environment than Manchester City to help make me become the best goalkeeper I can be," Trafford added. City, who begin their quest for a seventh Premier League title in nine seasons when they visit Wolverhampton Wanderers on August 16, said Trafford would wear the number one jersey. Rugby-World Rugby chief says franchise leagues need to allow test availability
SYDNEY (Reuters) -Test rugby remains the pinnacle of the game and any franchise league that does not offer players the chance to play it is unlikely to attract top talent, World Rugby chief executive Alan Gilpin warned on Tuesday. The R360 global franchise league, which is fronted by former England centre Mike Tindall, is scheduled to launch in 2026 and media reports have linked it with big-money offers for top rugby union and league players. Gilpin said he was open to dialogue with R360 and that World Rugby welcomed any investment into the sport as long as it created a more financially sustainable game for players and the "wider ecosystem". "Our position is whatever competitions arise, we know players want to play international rugby," he told reporters at the launch of the ticketing programme for the 2027 World Cup. "It's not true of every sport, but in our sport, the international game is the pinnacle of the game. "We've got a really quite tricky calendar in global rugby, so it's really important that whatever is getting endorsed and invested in gives players that opportunity. "And I think anything that doesn't give players that opportunity, players will vote with their feet on it." World Rugby's Regulation 9 enforces the release of players for test rugby from any recognised competition and Gilpin said the governing body would continue to insist on their availability for all international windows. That would include men's and women's British & Irish Lions tours, both Rugby World Cups and the Sevens competition at the Olympic Games. "Whatever new concepts, whether it's R360 or otherwise, that are being discussed with players ... that whole concept of player release for defined international windows in our sport is key," he said. "We've got to make sure that whatever competitions players are going to go and play in, they can play in those big moments because they want to. And the fans ... want that."
