Manchester City midfielder Rodri will not be at full fitness until after September's international break, Pep Guardiola has revealed.
The 2024 Ballon d'Or winner missed most of last season due to ligament damage and without him City failed to mount a strong defence of their Premier League crown.
The 29-year-old Spanish international fought his way back to fitness but suffered a groin injury in City's defeat to Saudi club Al-Hilal at the Club World Cup in the United States last month.

'Rodri's getting better but he had a big injury in the last game against Al-Hilal and for the last five or six weeks,' Guardiola said in comments released on Saturday.

'He's training right now and in the last two or three days is better. Hopefully maybe the international break is when he will be really, really fit.
'Hopefully, in the games (prior to that) he can play some minutes but the important thing is to not have pain because we don't want him to be come back and injured, come back and injured.
'We will try desperately to avoid that but he's training the last two or three days with us and that's good.'
The City staff are also nursing Phil Foden and Mateo Kovacic back to fitness and both players joined Rodri in being left out of a pre-season game in Sicily this week.
City face Wolves in their first Premier League game of the season next weekend and then play Tottenham and Brighton before the September internationals.

La Liga: Barcelona's Marc-Andre ter Stegen validated as long-term injury, paves way for Joan Garcia's registration

Marc-Andre Ter Stegen has been reinstated as Barcelona captain after a public social media post clarifying his injury status. (Image: Instagram) Barcelona announced Wednesday the long-term injury validation of goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen by the Spanish league, meaning the club can register new signing Joan Garcia without breaking financial fair play rules. "LaLiga's Medical Committee has ruled that goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen's injury meets the long-term injury criteria established by current regulations," Barcelona said in a statement on their website. "The club will proceed tomorrow (Thursday) to immediately formalise the registration of player Joan Garcia." After two seasons marred by serious injuries, Barcelona captain Ter Stegen underwent back surgery last month. However, the 33-year-old had refused up until last Friday to release his medical details as Barcelona tried to have him classified by La Liga as a long-term injury, which would allow them to deduct part of his pay from their official wage bill. The Catalan club had planned to use the German's long-term absence to register their new recruits while remaining within the financial fair play rules. In addition to the recruitment of 24-year-old shotstopper Garcia, Barcelona extended the contract of veteran Polish goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny this summer. 'Just Have To Wait...', Says PL CEO Richard Masters As Independent Body Handles Man City Charges

Last Updated: The Premier League issued 115 against City in February 2023 over alleged breaches of its financial rules, and with failing to co-operate with the investigation. Premier League chief executive Richard Masters revealed that his angsty wait for a verdict over the series of finacial charges mounted against Manchester City wouldn't amount to much as the case and investigating are at the hands of an independent hearing. The Premier League issued 115 against City in February 2023 over alleged breaches of its financial rules, and with failing to co-operate with the investigation. The case was heard by a commission between September and December last year, but no decision has been published. The issue continues to loom over the league as the 2025/26 season begins this weekend. Masters stated that his organisation has no control over when a verdict will be reached. 'Once the allegations and the charge have been put forward, they go before an independent panel, which is independently selected. They are then in charge of the process and its timings," Masters told Sky Sports News. 'They hear the case, they decide the outcome, and we have no influence over that or its timing. 'And that's right; from an independence point of view, it is essential that independent people make those decisions, and we just have to wait. 'My frustration is irrelevant, really. I mean, I just have to wait, and legal processes rarely take less time than you anticipated, but we have to be patient." City deny any wrongdoing and assert they have a comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence to clear their name. However, if they are found guilty, they could face a range of punishments, including a severe points penalty or even expulsion from the Premier League. City were charged with failing to report accurate financial information for nine seasons spanning from 2009/10 to 2017/18, as well as failing to provide full details of former manager Roberto Mancini's pay between 2009/10 and 2012/13. They are also charged with failing to provide full details of remuneration in contracts with players between 2010/11 and 2015/16, and with failing to co-operate with the investigation over a period from 2018 to 2023. Since an Abu Dhabi-backed takeover in 2008, City's fortunes have been transformed on the field from also-rans to the dominant force in English football. Eight of their ten top-flight league titles have been won since 2012, and they also won the Champions League for the first time in 2023. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
