Ambanis' Mumbai Indians clinch deal for 49% stake in Oval Invincibles
Sky News can exclusively reveal that the Ambani family, which has a fortune estimated to be tens of billions of dollars, triumphed in a live three-way auction conducted by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) on Friday.
The price that the Ambanis agreed to pay for the ECB stake was unclear, although sources said it was understood to have valued 100% of Oval Invincibles at approximately £125m.
If that price is confirmed, the roughly £60m accruing to the ECB would set a benchmark for the sale of the governing body's stakes in the remaining seven teams to be conducted over the next week.
The Mumbai Indians' owners triumphed after competing against a group of technology billionaires including the bosses of Google and Microsoft.
CVC Capital Partners, the private equity firm which has been a prolific investor in elite sport ranging from Formula One to volleyball, was also slated to take part in the auction.
The outcome, which may not be formally announced until next week, will see the Ambanis emerge among the most powerful stakeholders in English cricket.
One insider said the Mumbai Indians would gain significant governance rights over the cricketing aspects of the Oval Invincibles team.
The Oval Invincibles' men's team, captained by Sam Curran and featuring England internationals such as Gus Atkinson, is expected to fetch the second-highest price of any of the teams, behind Lords-based London Spirit, which will see the ECB's stake sold on Friday.
The tech billionaire consortium will also take part in that process.
Bidders in auctions with at least three participants are able to submit binding offers at 15-minute intervals, and in increments of at least £3m.
Birmingham Phoenix is next on the block, with its auction scheduled for Thursday afternoon.
Losing bidders in each franchise may be given the opportunity to participate in the remaining processes, although the mechanics of such a scenario were unclear on Wednesday.
The other remaining bidders for London Spirit are a vehicle controlled by Todd Boehly, a shareholder in Chelsea Football Club; members of the Manchester United-owning Glazer family; and RPSG Group, the owner of the Indian Premier League team Lucknow Super Giants.
For franchises with only two shortlisted bidders, the auction will involve a straightforward sealed bid shootout.
The London Spirit franchise is expected to be valued at more than £140m, meaning the proceeds to be received and distributed by the ECB would be at least £70m, the insiders added.
In total, the ECB has indicated that the eight teams could be worth in the region of £350m, although there are hopes that that figure will be exceeded.
The proceeds will be distributed between the hosts, non-host counties and the grassroots game.
Host counties are also allowed to sell their 51% shareholdings, although some have said they do not intend to do so.
The MCC, which controls the London Spirit franchise, does not intend to offload any of its stake at this point, according to cricket insiders.
Investors will only be allowed to own a stake in one of the eight teams, which also include Welsh Fire, Southern Brave and the Northern Superchargers.
A bigger-than-expected windfall from the process could offer a financial lifeline to a number of cash-strapped counties, with part of the proceeds likely to be used to pay down debt.
Concerns have been raised, however, that windfalls from the Hundred auction will not deliver a meaningful improvement in counties' long-term financial sustainability.
The outcome of the Hundred auction is also likely to intensify other searching questions about the future of cricket, as the Test format of the game struggles for international commercial relevance against shorter-length competition.
The Hundred auction is being handled by bankers at Raine Group, the same firm which oversaw the sale of large stakes in both Manchester United and Chelsea in recent years.

United's ability to secure deals for their top targets is in stark contrast to what Newcastle have endured this summer. Their struggles to sign a striker have also added another layer to Alexander Isak's transfer saga. Meanwhile, United boss Amorim will be happy to have assembled his new-look forward line. The Red Devils were in urgent need of a centre-forward, following Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee's struggles up front, and Amorim believes Sesko is the right man to lead the line. David Bentley has opened up on the punishment he received from Arsenal captain Patrick Vieira after he sat in the skipper's seat while the squad were away at a training camp David Bentley has shared a hilarious anecdote about how Patrick Vieira banned him from nights out for months after the captain was teased at a training camp. Bentley – once tipped to be Arsenal's next big star – emerged in the first team set-up from the Gunners' academy back in 2001. Arsene Wenger 's tenure in north London is remembered as one of the most iconic in the club's history, including their unbeaten Premier League-winning season in 2003/04. While raw talent and exceptional teamwork were key to Arsenal's triumphs in the early noughties. However, the squad's no-nonsense approach both on and off the pitch – epitomised by Vieira's stern presence – also played a significant role. This was something Bentley quickly discovered after graduating from the Hale End youth system, finding himself in hot water with Vieira during his first training camp away with the senior stars. Speaking on the Undr The Cosh podcast, the now 40-year-old recalled his cheeky-chap antics as a teen at Arsenal, saying: "We used to go to Austria to this training camp where they always wanted to go up in the mountains, out the way. "We've come down for breakfast, and what happened at Arsenal – it probably happens everywhere – was you had a French table, the English table, everybody used to kind of sit with people they get on with. "I've come down, me being me, I'm just wanting to be friends with everyone. I think I'm mates with everyone. French tables there, I think there's [Sylvain] Wiltord, [Robert] Pires and whoever. And there's a seat and I went, 'I'm sitting there.' So I've stepped in, and I've sat down and I went, 'Morning lads, you alright?' You know, 'What you up to last night? Have a good w***?' And all that, trying to be their mate. "And cause I don't like silence as well, I thought they can do that can't they? Be all calm. And as I've sat there, I've looked around and these lot are smirking. I'm going, 'They're on me here, I'm going to have to back myself up. They're mugging me off.' "And I just got a big slap, and I'm sat and I've looked up and Patrick, club captain... 'Get out my seat. You're in my seat.' And do you know when you're like, 'Ah f***, I'm red.' "In that moment, I thought, 'If I say yes, I'm going to look like a right mug, and if I say no, I'm going to look like a right mug. I can't win.' So I went with the option of, 'No.'" Bentley then revealed how he instantly wished he'd backed down, with Vieira stopping him from going out with his team-mates for months afterwards. He added (via Football London): "I mean, me and him are good mates now, and we were after and he quite liked it. "But for three, four months, I wasn't allowed to go on lads' nights out. I was kicked... honestly, every training session he'd snap me. I used to love it, I used to play with it. I used to go, 'Patrick, where we going tonight son?!' I think I turned up a couple of times, 'I know I'm not invited, but shut up!'" Sadly for Bentley, his time at Arsenal didn't quite pan out as expected, with only nine appearances to his name before being transferred to Blackburn Rovers in 2006. After netting 21 goals and providing an equal number of assists for Rovers, Bentley made his way back to north London to join Tottenham Hotspur. His career also included loan stints with Birmingham City, West Ham, Rostov and Blackburn before he decided to hang up his boots in July 2014, aged just 29.

Calvert-Lewin came through the ranks at Sheffield United but it has been sometime since he consistently hit his best level. From 2019 to 2021 the striker scored 36 times - including his single-season best haul of 21 when Carlo Ancelotti was in charge. One of those goals included a 95th minute equaliser for Everton during a 3-3 draw against United at Old Trafford. The striker was once the deputy to Harry Kane with England and was pushing for more involvement, but his career has dipped. However he has made it clear previously that he has lofty ambitions which he believes are still attainable. "The main thing for me is I want to win, I want to be in a winning environment," he said after leaving Everton. After the last three or four seasons it has been about survival. When I started my career I wanted to play in the Premier League, play for England a go to major tournaments with England and play in the Champions League. "I have played in a major tournament for England, I have played in the Premier League, but I haven't played in the Champions League.
