First Division: Horgan's spot-kick enough for Dundalk
Daryl's Horgan's expertly taken penalty deep in first-half stoppage time livened up a dull game as Dundalk maintained their lead at the top of the SSE Airtricity Men's First Division with the slenderest of wins. The Galwayman gave a glimpse about why he was rewarded with 17 caps as he gave Students keeper Dara Kavanagh the eyes before slotting the ball calmly into the opposite corner. Dundalk remain six points clear at the top, but they were made to work for it as Enda Minogue saved Adam Brennan's late penalty to secure a vital win. The visitors were the first to threaten and Andy Paraschiv left Kavanagh in no man's land as he nodded Declan McDaid's centre back across goal, but his looping header came back off the post. UCD hit back with a promising move of their own as Adam Wells ducked in from the right and knuckled a shot from 20 yards but it lacked the swerve to trouble Minogue in the Lilywhites goal. Ciarán Behan then slipped Mikey Raggett through in the box but, tracked by centre half Vinnie Leonard, he pulled his shot into the near side netting It was UCD's turn to test the woodwork then as they awarded a free kick 20 yards out when Leonard's centre back partner Mayowa Animasahun clumsily chopped down Raggett. Adam Verdon stepped up and sent a powerful curling shot over the wall and over the outstretched arm of Minogue that crashed back off the bar, and Behan put the rebound wide. Little else of consequence happened until injury time when Animasahun went from cartoon villain to hero as he went down softly following what appeared to be a shirt pull. The Students complained vociferously but ex-Preston North End and Hibernian man Horgan had no such quibbles and slotted the ball calmly into the left corner. Dundalk dominated a second half without many clear chances, Gbemi Arubi finding Kavanagh with a tame effort before McDaid stung the keeper's palms from range. Éanna Clancy strode forward and tested Minogue from 20 yards and Verdon saw his effort tipped over as the home side reverted to a more attacking formation. And their endeavour was rewarded three minutes from time as McManus appeared to handle in the area and, following a lengthy delay, Brennan stepped up. The midfielder was hesitant, however, and Minogue anticipated his weak effort and, though Hugh Smith bundled in a subsequent shot, he was deemed offside and the goal was struck off. Elsewhere the chasing pack kept pace with Cobh Ramblers and Bray Wanderers both claiming wins that saw them avoid losing further ground to Dundalk. Bray had to do it the hard way however and it took an injury-time winner from Richard Ferizaj's to claim a 3-2 victory over Treaty United. Mark Byrne put Treaty in front early on through Mark Byrne's opener but they were reduced to ten men soon after when Steven Healy was harshly adjudged to have denied Billy O'Neill a goal scoring opportunity. Goals from Conor Knight and Cian Curtis appeared to have the Seagulls cruising but a equaliser against the run of play from Joe Hanson looks set to give Treaty a hard-fought point before Ferizaj stuck out a foot to deflect his brother Justin's shot past the goalkeeper and into the net. Cobh Ramblers had a much more straight-forward victory as a hat-trick from Shane Griffin helped them a 3-1 win at home to Longford Town. Griffin opened the scoring on 37 minutes but fans were still celebrating that goal when Daniel Norris equalised two minutes afterwards. However Cobh stepped things up in the second-half and further goals from Griffin on the 50th and 81st minute were enough to seal things. Elsewhere Kerry claimed a convincing win in the battle between the basement sides as they eased to a 4-0 victory over bottom side Athlone. First-half goals from Ronan Teahan, Sean O'Connell and Robert Cleary all but ended the game as a contest by half-time and Carl Mujaguzi's second-half strike made sure of the result. While in Ferrycarrig Park, Wexford came from behind to beat Finn Harps 2-1. UCD: Dara Kavanagh; Adam Wells, Carl Lennox, Éanna Clancy (Declan Osa gie 80), Brian McManus (Ryan McBrearty 80); Adam Verdon, Adam Brennan, Ciarán Behan (Louis Dignam 84); Mikey McCullagh (Sam Norval 80), Jake Doyle, Mikey Raggett (Hugh Smith 59). Dundalk: Enda Minogue; Conor O'Keeffe, Mayowa Animasahun, Vinnie Leonard, John Ross Wilson; Harry Groome (Eoin Kenny 67), Aodh Dervin, Andy Parashiv (Shane Tracey 79); Declan McDaid (Rohan Vaughan 79), Daryl Horgan (Keith Ward 90+3), Gbemi Arubi. Josh Fitzpatrick stunner ends Cork City's winless run as Ger Nash lands first league victory at 10th attempt
IT'S been a long time coming, but Ger Nash finally gained his first league win as Cork City manager at the 10th attempt. Josh Fitzpatrick's first goal for his hometown club, combined with City's second clean sheet of the season, was enough to break their duck against John Caulfield's 2 Josh Fitzpatrick scored a cracker for Cork City as they earned their first win in 14 games 2 Cork City manager Ger Nash hopes the win can boost his side but they are only slim hopes as relegation looks likely In all, Their slim hopes of avoiding relegation require much more of the same as they remain eight points behind If the Bit 'o Red win their game in hand against Shelbourne, Galway could be dragged into the relegation play-off berth before the weekend is out. After coughing up a two-goal lead against Sligo, City's tailspin appeared to continue during the week as they lost Milan Mbeng to Shelbourne, Malik Dijksteel to St Mirren, and Cathal O'Sullivan to a serious knee injury. read more on football Ger Nash kept changes to a minimum with Alex Nolan replacing O'Sullivan. Caulfield overhauled more than half his team following their 4-2 defeat to Waterford. Brendan Clarke returned between the posts, joined by former City players Jimmy Keohane, Garry Buckley, and Colm Horgan, ex-Cobh stalwart David Hurley, plus Dara McGuinness. Another former Leesider, Stephen Dooley, signed midweek, but didn't feature here. City replicated their rapid start against Sligo Rovers by netting their fastest goal of the season in little over four minutes. Most read in Uncategorized After Harry Nevin's good work down the right, they switched the ball via Matthew Kiernan to Fitzpatrick on the other flank. He took two touches to tee up a 25-yard rocket, which roared into the far bottom corner. Fears Pep Guardiola's 'imminent' divorce could hurt Man City as boss' relationship with wife continues to deteriorate The young winger's first professional goal will rank high on the club's goal of the season shortlist. But captain Fiacre Kelleher limped off injured after a penalty appeal as Galway upped the ante. They almost caught their hosts cold with a training-ground corner-kick routine. However, Keohane's fierce effort was deflected over by his teammate Edward McCarthy. More pressure down the flanks led to a Stephen Walsh header, which drew a sharp reaction save from Conor Brann. The keeper later denied a glancing Horgan header from another set piece, while Keohane couldn't connect with a through ball. Caulfield called on returning midfielder Patrick Hickey at half-time, but City started stronger by feeding off Galway errors. Kitt Nelson dragged a shot wide before sliding in Evan McLaughlin, who was denied by Hurley's block. The Tribesmen were struggling to come up with any response, although nerves were bound to set in for City. It all unravelled from the hour mark against Sligo, and they had a scare here in the same minute. However, Hickey was flagged offside before finishing to the net. Before long, the American forged a point-blank chance under a long ball. It whizzed wide, although a corner was awarded for an apparent nick off of Rory Feely. The centre-back also got in the way of a Hurley blast. Despite some anxious moments under Galway's aerial bombardment, five yellow cards, and nine minutes of added time, City held out with last-gasp goalline blocks from Walsh and Hurley. Kerry FC end five-game losing run in style with four-nil win over Athlone Town
Kerry FC 4 Athlone Town 0 Just seven days after Colin Healy told the media that he believed it was on the players to change their recent run of poor form, his side responded with their biggest victory of the year. A week of trouble ended in elation for Kerry FC as they ran out comfortable winners over Athlone Town in Mounthawk Park on Friday evening. It was the story of the fantastic four scorers for the Kingdom, with Seán O'Connell, Ronan Teahan, Robbie Cleary and Carl Mujaguzi all finding the net against an Athlone side who struggled to match the intensity of Kerry at any point in the tie. The luxury of the result also meant that Healy was able to use all five substitutions early in the tie, with the second half of the double game week, a trip to play Treaty United in the Market's Field, scheduled for Monday. After a few days that saw unexpected turnover within the Kerry camp, new signings Matthew Connor and Ewan Lee were both trusted from the start by Colin Healy, with captain Seán McGrath named only on the bench. The first fifteen minutes were a lot less eventful than seven days ago against UCD, thankfully for the home support. Athlone did have the best chance of the period, after a Billy Gilmour free-kick found the head of centre-half Stanislav Hulidov, whose bullet header just went past the post, but that was about all they had to show going forward. Kerry were unlucky not to take the lead a couple of minutes later. Daniel Okwute's low-driven effort beat ex-Kerry keeper Lee Axworthy, but was denied by the foot of the post, off the back of a defence-splitting ball from Oran Crowe. The home side did eventually break the deadlock just before the half-hour mark. The goal came off the back of a great direct run from Robbie Cleary, who cut inside and played a slide-rule pass to Ronan Teahan, who found the net despite Axworthy getting a strong hand to the shot. Just four minutes later, Colin Healy's men doubled their lead. The second goal, known in football as an Olympico, came directly from the left foot of Seán O'Connell, whose corner flew over the head of everybody and into the net. With confidence high, Healy's side found their third of the game just four minutes before the break. Billy Gilmour's attempt to play out from the back was scuppered by the high press of Cleary, who drove into the box and finished from an acute angle. Kerry FC came out with the same intensity they ended the first with, which was music to the ears of the home supporters who have been criticised for sitting back on their leads this season. The fourth game came in spectacular fashion just after the hour mark. When the ball broke back to defensive midfielder Carl Mujaguzi 25 yards from goal, the Mounthawk Park attendance all shouted shoot in unison, and did he ever. The Ugandan International smashed off his right foot into the far corner, to well and truly settle the result. With the outcome set in stone, Healy turned to his bench and made all five substitutions before the 80th minute. McGrath, Adams, Brosnan, Healy and Barrett were all introduced, with maybe the only blemish on the performance coming from Arran Healy's stint on the field lasting just five minutes after a knock to the head. The win is the Kingdom's first in six league games. ATHLONE TOWN: Lee Axworthy, Reece Webb, Cole Omorehiomwan, Kyle O'Connor, Aderinsola Adewale, Kelende Thiam, Billy Gilmour, Jason Oyenuga, Gideon Tetteh, Stanislav Hulidov, Dean Williams Subs: Daniel McKenna for Thiam, (58), Ben Feeney for Adewale (58), Noe Baba for Hulidov (65), Eoin Sheeran for Gilmore (65), William Smith for Oyenuga (87)
