I'm just a bride-to-be. Looking for a suit. That doesn't make me look like a politician

The Guardian16-06-2025
It's a month until my wedding, and my suit has arrived in the post, unceremoniously crammed into a plastic postage bag. I wasn't expecting it to come from China, but China is of course where things come from. Unbagging the crinkled jacket and trousers for my supposed Big Day felt a little deflating.
Although I'm not sure what I did have in mind. I've never fantasised about getting married. As a gay woman, this wasn't even an option for me until 2013. In fact, the closest I ever came to daydreaming about this occasion was when I was around four and I'd inferred from Disney movies that 'getting married' was the act of a prince ballroom dancing with a princess. The dancing was neither here nor there, but I knew I wanted to be the prince.
There wasn't a single a-ha moment when I twigged that feminine clothes made me feel like the world's most reluctant drag queen (a drag peasant?), but gradually I embraced being butch. And casual butch I can do – wearing Carhartt, Finisterre, even M&S menswear for that middle-aged dad look.
Then it comes to formalwear. Not that 'formal' was what I had in mind aesthetically for the wedding (so far it's looking more like a very slightly upmarket children's birthday party). But turning up on the day dressed like a contractor feels like a tantrum, and there's no small part of me that wants to look nice, whatever that means. I settled on the idea of a suit: something classic and well tailored.
In women's sections of high-street shops, lurid blazers with flouncy embellishments seem to whisper to each other about me, like a pack of vicious teen girls who only found out what a lesbian is by watching a controversial episode of their favourite soap. After several trips like this, I hadn't tried anything on, and bespoke women's suits from some of the beautiful female tailors of Savile Row are financially out of the question.
It's surprising to me how stressed I've become about looking good on my wedding day. But weddings get to you. No matter how much of a non-wedding wedding you think you're having, it's still … a wedding. While doing my utmost to queer the term 'bridezilla', I'm just a woman looking for a suit that doesn't make me look like a member of the shadow cabinet.
When the desperation hit after another three hours' Googling variations on 'women's suit wedding androgynous', I finally submitted to the eerie siren song of a site claiming to make affordable bespoke suits. With its slick UX and promise to solve an issue that had now been consuming me for months, I was sold. I designed my perfect suit – dark navy, streamlined and flattering without any frills – added it to my cart and entered my card details in a trance.
A month later my AI-generated, SEO-advertised, Shein-era bag of 'what did you think you were getting?' flew in from Shanghai. I'd thought I was ordering it from a Europe-based company, but the item had been 'dropshipped', sent directly from the manufacturer rather than the e-commerce retailer I bought it from. The jacket was at least five inches longer than what I thought I'd ordered, and putting it on felt a little bit like trying on one of my dad's blazers as a kid.
The suit looked better after having been left to hang for 24 hours, but marriage material it is not. After a brief identity crisis in which I wondered whether my gender expression might be 'scam victim', I managed to override a lifetime's worth of social conditioning and enter a full-on menswear store. I'd been drawn to the brand, Percival, since it released a Seinfeld-inspired collection. Even if I'm way more of a George than a Kramer. The moment I walked through the door, I also managed to find a near-perfect outfit. Which turned out to be a green linen suit – exactly the same one that was worn by Sadiq Khan last year. My partner tried to console me on this matter by reminding me that 'we did vote for him'.
Yes, I'll be taking my Sadiq suit to a tailor to shorten the arms and bring in the shoulders. No drastic alterations, though. Even if you have boobs, I've learned, the term 'menswear' should be consigned to the past, along with bathroom carpeting and lobotomies. While we're at it, bring on the grooms in white dresses.

Kim Kardashian breaks down in tears over ex-husband Kanye West in explosive documentary trailer

Kim Kardashian was breaking down in tears in an explosive documentary trailer about her ex-husband, Kanye West. She could be heard getting upset during a heated argument with the controversial rapper in a video teasing the upcoming In Whose Name? documentary. In the beginning of the trailer, which debuted on YouTube on Wednesday, showed a tense moment between Kardashian and West, who now goes by Ye, when they were still married. The rapper admitted that he stopped taking his medication for his bipolar disorder: 'I'm off my meds for five months now.' While he is seen exiting her dressing room at an unknown event, Kardashian could be heard with her voice audibly shaking and seemingly sobbing as she told him: 'Your personality was not like this a few years ago.' The pair were previously married from 2014 to 2022 and share four children: North, Saint, Chicago and Psalm. Their divorce proceedings and ongoing co-parenting dynamic has made headlines over the years — even back to when their marriage started breaking down in the public eye and as he continued sharing offensive social media posts years after their split. She could be heard getting upset during a heated argument with the controversial rapper in a video teasing the upcoming In Whose Name? documentary In the beginning of the trailer, which debuted on YouTube on Wednesday, showed a tense moment between Kardashian and West, who now goes by Ye, when they were still married Audio clips were stitched together with West talking and at other points, his voice was even yelling: 'It's a calling by the universe. Never tell me I'm going to wake up one day and have nothing.' Then, the then-couple could be seen sitting on a couch together, facing each other. After what appeared to be another tense conversation, she calmly said to him, 'We could talk about that later, but...' before he interrupts her: ''It ain't no but.' 'When I went to the hospital and one of the ideas was to do a church,' he narrated alongside clips of his Easter Sunday Service performance at the 2019 Coachella Music Festival, where he appeared to be crying as Chance the Rapper consoled him. 'Yeah, I was just being embarrassed or ashamed to cry, man,' he narrated alongside more clips of his activities over the years, including making music, filming artistic videos, spending time with his young children and designing fashion. 'When we're at the prisons, professing how Jesus can set you free, it's true,' an audio clip of a sermon played over clips of inmates in prison during church service. 'Thank you, Jesus. I decided to run,' the rapper said as a clip of West holding up a sign that read, 'YE4PRESIDENT,' flashed across the screen. In the trailer, West could be seen with their kids and traveling with their eldest daughter North West when she was a toddler. Going back to how he stopped taking his medication, he was also heard declaring: 'I'd rather be dead than to be on medication. Either they destroy me or I destroy it.' 'It's a sad dream,' Kardashian's voice made one final appearance as West continued to vent. 'They're killing our ability to think outside of the box. And I'm almost like a masochist,' he said. 'I like whatever I want, when I want. It's worse.' In the concluding clip, he proclaimed: 'You know the best thing about being an artist and bipolar? Anything you do and say is an art piece.' The trailer showed clips preceding when West got married to Bianca Censori, so it is unclear if the documentary will feature the 30-year-old Yeezy architect-turned-model. He previously opened up about begin diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2016 after being hospitalized for a psychiatric emergency. The trailer also included more clips of the rapper putting together more of his designs with sneak peeks of his process Here he was seen at some of his invite-only gatherings, which featured gospel music performed by himself and his Sunday Service Choir Later, another clip showed him during a quiet moment in his life as he traveled alone The trailer was riddled with artistic cinematography showing West around the world and even posing in the middle of the street in Paris However, earlier this year, West said he was misdiagnosed and has now been diagnosed as autistic, which is not a mental illness. The upcoming documentary was directed and produced by Nico Ballesteros, a filmmaker who started working as an intern for West at age 18 and filmed him over six years. The summary of the trailer read: 'Over six years, 18-year-old Nico Ballesteros captured an unfiltered portrait of Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, offering unprecedented access into the private and public life of one of the most controversial figures in modern culture. 'The film charts Ye's meteoric rise to becoming the richest Black man in American history and the choices, contradictions, and collapses that have since redefined his legacy,' the description continued. 'Featuring appearances by Kim Kardashian and other influential figures from Ye's inner circle, the documentary explores the razor's edge between creative genius and self-destruction, revealing the cost of freedom in a fame-obsessed world.' The documentary is set for release on September 19 and, according to Ballesteros, will premiere in 'thousands' of AMC Theaters.

Is Phillip Schofield's bachelor lifestyle a sign that divorce is on the cards? What that boozy afternoon out with male friend, 30, says about his 32-year marriage to VERY loyal wife Stephanie

As Phillip Schofield staggered on to the street after a boozy afternoon out, clutching a vape with one hand and the waist of his male companion with the other, he looked every inch the carefree bachelor. The beleaguered former presenter was accompanied by male friend Joshua Luke Sharman, a London based nurse, during an visit to the city's first LGBTQ + dedicated cinema, the Arzner Bar & Cafe in Bermondsey. With summer temperatures soaring, Schofield, 63, looked somewhat worse for wear, but fortunately, the former This Morning star had Sharman - who describes himself as a 'nurse, academic, inexperienced aviator and clueless but optimistic PhD candidate' - on hand as a supportive and stabilising presence. Schofield's wife Stephanie Lowe - the other supportive and stabilising presence in his life, for altogether different reasons - appeared to be absent as he walked arm-in-arm with Sharman across Bermondsey Square. To all intents and purposes, the star - who came out as gay more than five years ago - looked like a carefree single man during his latest public appearance on Tuesday, despite his 23-year marriage to Stephanie. His loyal wife previously insisted she would fully support her husband's 'brave step' and 'stand by his side' as he publicly announced his sexuality during a live appearance on This Morning. But with Schofield now living as an openly gay man, one cannot help but wonder if - or indeed when - the amicable couple might finalise an equally amicable divorce. Schofield was 25-years old and a fresh faced children's TV presenter when he met Stephanie, at the time a production assistant for CBBC. Six years later they were married, with the happy couple exchanging vows in appropriately romantic surroundings at the 16th century, Class A listed Ackergill Tower, located in Sinclair's Bay on Scotland's rugged northern coast. The responsibilities of parenthood would soon follow; already pregnant on her wedding day, Stephanie welcomed the couple's first child - daughter Molly - just four months later, in July 1993. Second child Ruby followed in 1996, the arrival coinciding with a transitional period for Schofield, who had branched into mainstream TV presenting and West End musical theatre after endearing himself to millions as the face of CBBC and Saturday morning kids show Going Live! Stephanie meanwhile, was an ever present, the supportive and loyal wife pictured alongside her husband at showbiz soirees and red carpet events as his career went from strength to strength. And little appears to have changed, despite Schofield - whose TV career appears to be in ruins - later admitting he cheated on his her with a younger male colleague while host of ITV daytime flagship This Morning, a role he occupied for 21 years before his departure in 2023. The downturn began in 2020, when Schofield - supported by This Morning co-host Holly Willoughby - announced in a tearful address to viewers that he is gay Schofield later admitted he was suicidal during the bitter fallout that ensued, but still had the valued support of his wife and two children. However, insiders painted a more complicated picture of the family dynamic, which revealed their pulling together was a matter of more than just family loyalty. 'After so long together, Steph and Phil are co-dependent. They would rather be a united front and stay together', an insider told Daily Mail in 2024, adding that if they broke up it would 'create even more drama' for them and their daughters. Another friend said: 'They still love each other. It's that simple'. Schofield's career imploded as his infidelity with an ITV staff-member came to light, as did his once rock solid friendship with co-host Holly Willoughby, to whom he lied about the affair. Just four years earlier Willoughby had comforted the emotional presenter live on air as he confirmed his sexuality in a tearful address to millions of viewers, but the writing appeared to be on the wall after Schofield's infidelity was exposed. Regardless, loyal Stephanie remained a tower of strength for her under-fire husband. 'I love Phillip, as much today as I ever have, and always will,' she told The Sun at the time. 'We've been awestruck by the strength and love of our precious girls, even as they've been trying to make sense of it all for themselves. Our family have also been so supportive and will help us going forward. 'Although this is difficult for us all, I support Phillip in taking this brave step. I will still be there, holding his hand. Everyone should be proud to live their own truth.' The couple's enduring closeness was well in evidence last year, when the Schofields allowed Channel 5 cameras into their Oxfordshire home for his warts-and-all docuseries, Phillip Schofield: Cast Away. Schofield, facing an uncertain professional future after leaving This Morning under a ruinously black cloud, was tasked with the unenviable challenge of living alone on a remote tropical island for ten days, where he would 'face the challenges of life in isolation.' But not before bidding farewell to his loved ones over a boozy lunch, during which viewers were given a unique insight into his relationship with Stephanie and their daughters. 'We've seen him in his lowest times, but I've been so proud of him, and as a daughter to see the love that people had for him that when it's taken away it's just heartbreaking,' said Molly, who now works as her father's publicist, in a scene from the show. 'Weirdly everything that's happened recently has made us closer. When my dad came out, it was, it was very hard for me. 'It was very hard for the entire family. Mainly my mum, of course, everything was turned upside down. But we talked through it and over time it's got easier.' She added: 'My mum, my sister, we're all the same we will always continued to support him no matter what. And I never thought it would have gone the way it has but to have my parents still best friends. I'm the luckiest person ever.' In the first episode, Schofield told how he had 'everything in place' for a suicide attempt, but decided against it when his eldest daughter Molly persuaded him not to. He said: 'In the last eighteen months, it got as dark as it is possible to get. A year ago I got so, so close. I had everything in place, everything was set up and everything was ready and it was Molly that was looking after me.' He explained: 'Molly and Ruby both looking after me at the time, and Molly said: 'Do you imagine what this would do to us if you actually managed to pull this off? 'Can you imagine what would happen and can you imagine what it would do to me if you did this on my watch?' 'That was just enough, just enough to take a step back from the edge. I could have been hospitalised, I just raced to the family home and shut the gates and I was in there.' He later paid tribute to his wife, Molly and his youngest daughter Ruby, adding: 'Without them, I wouldn't be here.' Schofield's return to television on Cast Away cames 16 months after he was forced to apologise to the Mail for lying about his affair with his former This Morning colleague. But during the programme, he addressed the relationship, saying: 'It's like the biggest grenade going off in your life. You know you let people down, you know you've let yourself down. 'It was an unwise and unprofessional thing to do. I will be forever sorry. I screwed up. I made a mistake, and I hurt the people around me.' Indeed, but what now for the Schofields? If history has told us anything, it tells us that love, however flawed, can weather any storm. Only time will tell if it lasts.

Christie Brinkley's awkward moment as ex-husband she accuses of cheating with teen shows up at her book signing... with 40-years-younger wife

She has described their marriage as 'one of the most tormented experiences of my life' – an experience that came to a screeching stop when she discovered he was cheating on her with a teenager. So, it's hardly surprising that feuding exes Christie Brinkley and Peter Cook were careful to keep their distance when both showed up at a fundraising gala in East Hampton on Saturday night. Photos show the former couple at Author's Night – a lavish society bash that raises cash for East Hampton Library – doing their best to avoid each other. Making the encounter all the more awkward was 66-year-old Cook's date for the night: his 26-year-old blonde wife Alba Jancou. Brinkley, meanwhile, was one of the featured authors: signing copies of her memoir Uptown Girl in which she excoriates Cook for his cheating and the six-year divorce battle it precipitated. She wrote: 'Years later, in 2012, after a tumultuous six-year divorce and custody battle with Peter, he called me a liar on national television. 'I never defended myself, and while I'm not interested in talking about him now, I do want to share a little story.' That story began with her giving a commencement address at a graduation ceremony at Southampton High School. According to Brinkley, after the address a man not involved in the event tapped her on the shoulder and told her that Cook, an architect, was sleeping with his 18-year-old daughter. Brinkley continued: 'I knew from Peter's face that he was guilty, and in that moment, I thought I was going to pass out onstage, in front of hundreds of people. 'When I stood back up, I asked the man for his card, but he told me he didn't have one and that he was a police officer in town, so all I had to do was to go into the station if I wanted the full story.' According to the glamorous blonde, she went on to get all the details and kicked Cook out – teeing up a painful divorce and a lengthy custody battle over their model daughter Sailor, now 27. Brinkley has been married four times. Husband number one was French artist Jean-François Allaux (left) while her third was real estate entrepreneur Richard Taubman Brinkley has been married four times – before fourth husband Cook, she was wed to French artist Jean-François Allaux, real estate entrepreneur Richard Taubman and most famously of all, singer Billy Joel. Brinkley and Joel were married from 1985 to 1994 and share a daughter, Alexa Ray, who was born in 1985. Currently single, she has been publicly unenthusiastic about the prospect of a fifth husband and suggested making marriages a five-year deal during an interview with Sex and the City Star Kristin Davis on her podcast earlier this week. The 71-year-old told the Are You A Charlotte? host: You could get married, like, 'We'll see if you want to renew it in five years, 'Every five years, go, 'Do you want to renew?' That way, if you're getting bored or whatever, you can get out of it without all the lawyers and all that stuff.' Cook, meanwhile, has had no such qualms and married his much younger wife in an intimate ceremony in Capri in 2023. The blushing bride, who was just 20 when she got engaged to Cook, wore a stunning appliqued dress by Israeli designer Lee Grebenau for the al-fresco nuptials teamed with a pair of Aquazzura shoes. Jancou told People Magazine the weddings was 'romantic' and that they knew they wanted to get married in Capri because they had vacationed there multiple times Speaking to People magazine after the event, Jancou – who at 26 is a year younger than her stepdaughter Sailor – described the wedding as 'romantic' and 'visually stunning'. She said: 'I mean, who doesn't want to get married in Capri!? We both absolutely love Italy; it is our favorite country. 'We have traveled all over Italy together and the one place that really stood out to us was Capri. We loved everything from the views, the food and the culture. It is so romantic and visually stunning.' Architect Cook added: 'We had vacationed there in 2021, and spent the day of our third anniversary taking a boat trip where we kissed under the Faraglioni. 'About a year after our trip, Alba found a perfect terrace overlooking the Faraglioni, and we knew that was where we wanted to get married.'
